- Mark King sat down with Rob Green in 2000 to develop the Status KingBass, a headless, double-cutaway bass with a woven graphite through-neck, Status Hyperactive pickups and active electronics.

More than four decades later, he’s still a God of slap.
Not only is Mark King a phenomenal bass player/singer/writer he is an incredible drummer. He started out on drum kit…..hence his impeccable groove and timing.👍👍
Mark King said once that there are better bass players out there, but I think his contribution was bringing slap bass to pop music when it was largely confined to jazz & funk at the time...
still love to watch him play. pure energy.
Always dangerous to say, 'the best' or 'ultimate' but his innovation of drumming with left-hand slaps, all whilst singing had such an impact back in the early eighties.
You talking about stu hamm, victor wooten?
there's a real precision and consistency to his tone. it was perfect for their music. it popped right on through
Just my opinion but there is something about the way Mark plays slap bass that puts him head and shoulders above everyone else.
I think it’s the consistency of tone and machine-like rhythmic drive.
and the natural flow ;)
That sound ❤❤❤❤
Levin, Pallidino, King, Sting. My all-time favorites.
Reading all the coments. Its not a competition who is best at this or that.
Well, this is not about Mark King as a musician, but about the Status Mark King Bass. He used to play JayDee and still does on some shows. I have one myself and love the sound of those Basses. I have not had the opportunity to play one and guess the sound has a lot to do with the Amp Settings. One downside of the JayDees is their tendency to require more Neck Adjustments than other Basses due to their very flat Neck Profile. The Carbon of the Status Modells is a huge advantage. So yes, the Status might be the ultimate Slap Machine.
I had a graphite neck bass. It was great for solos but gutless for ensemble play. You want a thick muddy tone for that.
Never heard anyone talk about Stanley Clarke and Mr King?
Ah. I could play that well if there were lights on my bass telling me where to put my fingers ;)
Victor Wooten is king of the bass!!!
My vote goes to Les Claypool
Primus legendary bassist. Guys a fricking genius.👍
No doubt Mark is a bad man on bass, the king of slap? Don't even try it!
Sings too
He's great. But....Marcus Miller, Stanley Clarke, Les Claypool...to name just 3...
The best....well....
Slap bass is a one trick pony, and that pony only has two legs and is dying from syphilis.
It sounds absolutely hideous
I'm sorry but I prefer M. Marcus Miller, but M. Mark King is a great bass player, and I love a lot Level 42 !
Bloody ridiculous.
Louis Johnson.
That is all .
Nah
the only time i ever liked slap Bass was when i saw Guthrie Govan doing it on stage around 1997 in a funk band called 'Obie One' at the YMCA in Chelmsford #FlexANDshitOnSlap
