i know right?! it doesn't even matter what it looks like, if it were real and appeared so suddenly in front of them everyone would shit their pants. lol
LesJosuaManga Same. I don't know why though. I read the comments, I knew it was coming. It looked like funky meatball, but it still got me. I loved this!
I know most people are a bit disappointed by the ending monster. But perhaps that's what they were going for? This film was amazingly made, and showed that you don't need some crappy monster to jumpscare you, in order for it to be truly scary. The atmosphere, and the build up enough, proved just how scary a movie can be without the use of constant jump scares, and unoriginal movie monsters.
I like to think that the buildup meant to be really good and then it disappoints you I feel as if this disappointment that you get from the scare permeates the short film in your mind.
Damian Mc Carthy Dear god that suspense really gets you. You spend most of the film going do it already i cant take any more. There is not many films that leave me covering my eyes but this did it. Good job !!!!
it depends one how you were watching it, i mean the thing is absolutely ridiculous looking and if that's the first thing you notice, than yeah, it's disappointing. but the first time i watched it the suspense had me glued and my attention narrowed so it actually ended up being one of the worst jump scares i've ever experienced.
Damian Mc Carthy The ending was meant to be a funny jump "scare", right? Because I was kind disappointed with the ending, since this short movie had such great, tense build up.
Holy fucking hell that was great. I know some people are laughing at the monster but the sheer UNEXPECTEDNESS caught me completely off guard. I'm thinking, "scary happy face!" or "slenderman-ish!" or "demon!" but nope it looked like nothing I've ever seen and I died of fright.
Absolutely; I was expecting the thing from Bedfellows, or Lights Out, so I wouldn’t have been scared by that. But this? It was so unexpected that it terrified me out of my wits.
Damn I usually don't fall for jump scares but that one got me. I think it works so well because they focus so much on the door behind him that when it turns out to be where it is it catches you off guard.
That was AWESOME. The build up was intense, and the ending was the perfect way to release the tension. I laughed for 10 minutes afterwards, after 5 minutes of dread. LOVED IT
The ending was such a shame, because the buildup of the actual scare or monster was really well done. Kudos to you for creating atmosphere for such a silly monster and making me actually fear it XD. Awesome job.
While the intent of McCarthy's short was to make you scared of a silly jump scare, I still cannot get over how much more effective this short would be if it played on fearing fear itself. As the laptop focused on the word "FRIGHT", I thought the short was going to run with the idea of fearing fear itself. Despite the abrupt ending, WELL. DONE. I love how the short played on most peoples' fears we have (being in the dark, not knowing when we're going to die, etc.) and even the subtle symbols (the "Life is full of surprises" card, the smiley face pin, the monkey shielding its eyes, even the color scheme) kept me on edge because of these dark/morbid indications that something bad was going to happen. While this premise wouldn't work as a feature film, I would LOVE to see a full-length film with the same kind tension and that preys on basic human features such as this one. Great job Mr. McCarthy! :)
That was absolutely fantastic! The build-up was hilarious and gripping at the same time and the jump scare at the end was unexpected. Truly an excellent story! Thanks for the entertainment.
I really like the position in which the monster was. Placing it behind the man's head was a great idea in my opinion. The video was fantastic and it made me very anxious, wonderful job! 👏
Perfect! The name, the tension, the length, the atmosphere. In the end I just couldn't keep looking at my screen anymore and covered some of it with my hand. And I am not that easy to scare...
The ending was friggin hysterical. That scream mixed with that derpy face, lol. Shame... The buildup was great! Can't say I didn't expect a jumpscare, but it could've been so much better than that
Great build up of suspense and loved the ending. It really would not matter what was there at the end, clever build up = fright then peculiar creature = laughter! Thank you
That was awesome!!! The build up was amazing!! Then the end scared me a bit, but it made me laugh. Not only at the face but that it scared me.. good job!
This must have been the biggest literal jumpscare I ever got. And the fact that the monster in itself is not really scary at all makes it even better. Excelent build up.
Me too! I was actually really impressed with the suspense it built. I was half hoping that it was going to have an anti-climactic ending instead of a random jump scare, but this totally works. It's funny watching it again.
The end made that short film really perfect :D didn't expect that and that scared the shit out of me :D after that I had to laugh so hard! :D Great work!
Even though the monster was blah, it was still a very good short horror film. It built up the suspense perfectly and it even got me to jump a bit at the end. All in all, I'd give it a three stars,
My film teacher made us watch a bunch of horror shorts that includes this one, and lights out. I'd say I give this a 7/10 since it's the only one that genuinely freaked me out, despite using a cheap jumpscare.
Dude with in one second of that blood curdling scream I felt my heart drop and skip a beat, my spine tingle, and my body jolt just a little. Trust me all those feelings within that one second was enough to cause me to have a mini heart attack. That was an awesomely intense build up. but the monster could have not looked so retarded though lol.
Just saw this today and I love everything, specially the ending, it's perfect. Well done, sir. I don't like cheap jump scares and things that rely on gore and monsters for the scary effect, and this was a brilliant parody of both of those things. I hope it was the intention.
This had perfect build up. Great tension. Nice pacing. And everything a short one-shot horror film needed. But the ending seemed TOO generic. Dont get me wrong, I loved this. But you could have ended it a bit better. Say, when he was doing the questions have one say "Do you want to know how you will die?" he clicks yes. Then the next one should be "Ask him". to him slowly realizing whats about to happen as the camera pans out to a person/creature standing behind him. But hey, Im no filmogropher or anything, just my opinion. I would really like to see a different ending other than a screamer.
I believe if his intention was to actually make a serious short film he would have no problem executing that. And I'm sure you were expecting something along those lines. If you check the description box it has won many awards in festivals described as thriller, horror, shriek, and fright. The way you would have liked it to end would not have scared me like this video did :/ And the way you described the preferred ending sounds like every horror movie I've ever seen. I can see where you are coming from but I don't think that would have been a great way to end a short film entry. He has to build the tension very high with the short time allotted and get the jump on us; which he does by diverting our attention behind him instead of to the side of him. Very well done. Anyways those are just my two cents.~ Have a grand day :)
Claudio Flores Jumpscares are a horrible way to make fear. They make you jump but just because it's unexpected. I think Neneko101's idea would've been way better because this had a lot going for it. I really don't know what you meant by saying "that seems like every horror movie I've seen", because not many horror movies are like that. I wish you would have said examples.
I didn't feel like going though every movie I've seen to pinpoint these moments. Off the top of my head easily what he is suggesting sounds like the Scream series (fantastic movies). If i had never seen anything like he had suggest I too would have been like "that would have been AMAZING NO ONE HAS EVER DONE THAT BEFORE!" But they have. Also I would not have been creeped out or scared by what he wanted. I SHIT MYSELF and no matter how much you think jumpscares are a horrible way to scare someone it did indeed make me shit myself. The whole point of horror and scary movies in general is to get the audience with someone/something unexpected. And even if you do expect it you still dont know WHEN in time in the movie it's going to happen which makes it even more suspenseful because you are waiting for it. Slow pans and slow reveals just don't cut it anymore now a days unless you really know what you are doing. Plus this is a short film. Every second counts. He's not going to waste and suspense time to awkwardly throw off the speed and tempo of the movie with a clunky slow reveal. And every genre of film or TV has slow reveals which is why it sounded boring to me.
The suspense built in this is amazing. I rarely jump, but I did here and then I laughed, great! I'm not a fan of "jump scares" but this one earned it since it wouldn't have been nearly as effective had the build-up not been so perfectly done.
I am an avid horror fan, even to the point of obsessively digging for new content I haven't seen in order to find something original or simply something that will genuinely scare me. Gotta say, the tension in this video was fingertip-gnawing. Congrats!
If it had just ended before that weird evil cookie-looking thing popped up, I would have been on the edge of my seat all night. But I can't help but feel that if you didn't end it with a joke, it would probably have been the best scary short I'd ever seen.
for those wondering how this is suppose to be horror, i bet about 90% of viewers watching this alone at night were caught totally by surprise by the end. i mean it literally scares the shit outta you.
That was amazing! Oh geez, the monster didn't even have to be scary and I fell out of my chair! My roommate is getting me an ice pack for where I hit my head. XD
This scared my mom so much, she screamed and slapped my leg so hard there were fingerprints. Brilliant short film I might add, I love the buildup and the ending. Any recommendations for videos like this one?

but the buildup was amazing shame about the ending though
I think that May have been his aim. Like you get a fright but straight away you're like - wait, what? Hahaha
Damian Mc Carthy Dear god that suspense really gets you. You spend most of the film going do it already i cant take any more. There is not many films that leave me covering my eyes but this did it. Good job !!!!
