Typee sounds good. Perez on FF is a treat, I liked his Thing Two-in-One issues, Project Pegasus saga was great. I've not read much, nibbling away at Mighty Masterworks Black Panther volume 2, and read Hera by Jennifer Saint.
If you keep in this pace next year you will be nearly done with the Challenge! Good work. I hope you, the Lady of the Manor and the dogs enjoy your holidays. 🎄🎅
I remember Typee being a great book. I have the same LOA edition. I need to read the other books in that volume. Good to know there will be people reading Lovecraft on Christmas. Dunwich Horror for me. Seasons greetings to you, the Lady of the Manor, Roger, and the hell hounds.
Merry Christmas to you and yours, Michael. And to all those that dwell at stately Vaughan Manner. May your shelves, whether they hold fiction or non-fiction, mystery, thriller, or fantasy, continue to take you down paths unknown (or known) filling your soul with knowledge, laughter and enjoyment for many years to come. ... ps. See you Wednesday.
Wishing you, the Lady of the Manor (and of course cheap old Roger) a very Merry Chthulu Christmas and a wonderful New Year. What a joy to have found your channel in 2024! This past week at the Beach Shack of Retirement, I read: For my ‘Read every Classic in chronological order’ Challenge: #392 ‘A Tour of the Whole Island of Great Britain’ by Daniel Defoe (1724) Plus a cheat from 1957: #996 The Guns of Navarone by Alistair Maclean For my Speculative Fiction Quest: ‘Swords Against Death ’ by Fritz Leiber ‘The Haunted Man’ by Charles Dickens For my Mighty Comics Catchup: Incredible Hulk [1963] 115-116 Bring on 2025!
Good Evening Sir Michael, Roger and all the esteemed Folk of the Manor Wishing you all a wonderful Christmas, I hope you get to put the feet up and get some reading in. Best Wishes Al TheGoldKeyFourcolorkisownunda
There were a few mariners turned authors who wrote classic novels. Richard Henry Dana wrote Two Years Before the Mast, Joseph Conrad wrote Heart of Darkness, The Secret Sharer and Lord Jim and of course Hermann Melville wrote Moby Dick, Typee and my favorite Billy Budd. Maybe you should do a video about seafarers who wrote books ⛵️ 📚
Sometimes life gets in the way and videos just gotta be late or get cut. Roger looks very festive today! I’d be wary of anything he tries to give you, it might be a trick!
Merry Christmas Michael to yourself, and Roger and those close to you. And also to my fellow followers of your channel Merry Christmas or Happy Holidays ; whichever pertains !
Cannibal #1: "I don't like my mother-in-law". Cannibal #2: "Just eat the fries then". You've made "Typee" sound fascinating Michael, I've added it to my list. The Marvel Boy/Crusader story is one of my favourite FF stories and I think Roy Thomas is right up there as one of the book's great writers.
Happy Christmas. Typee was the first book I was supposed to read at University... I didn't finish it, maybe one day.... I did read some other Herman Melville like Bartleby, Billy Budd and of course Moby Dick.
Merry Christmas, Michael! Thanks for all the great videos filled with recommendations and insights into so many different writers and genres. Wishing you much joy in 2025!
My January TBR is heavy on mysteries with a scifi and a pulp fantasy thrown in: "The Last Dance" (Ed McBain), "Foundation's Edge" (Isaac Asimov), "Takedown Twenty" (Janet Evanovich), "Scorpius" (John Gardner), "The Mystery of the Blue Train" (Agatha Christie), "The Burglar Who Met Fredric Brown" (Lawrence Block), and "The Moon Man" (Edgar Rice Burroughs).
Typee sounds good. I've never divulged this before but I'm part of a cannibal reading group. We only eat: a) poetry readers and b) vegans. Vegans taste better. 🤭 Merry Christmas....eve 🎄
Great comic reading. Those books look so big and unwieldy. I'll stick to the Showcase Presents b&w reprints. I love those. They're getting expensive in the second hand market now.
When evaluating 70s culture in media I've found the Brady Bunch test to be the most accurate. If Greg and Marsha did it or wore it you can be sure it's authentic
Speaking of cannibals' A similar thing happened when religious missionaries first encountered the Aztecs, they had heard rumors they were all cannibalistic savages. Only to realize while spending time with them, that the human flesh was exclusively consumed by the elders, high priests and leaders of Aztec society. No regular Aztec person was consuming human flesh, It was a ritual reserved for special or important people. Normal Aztec citizens ate the same dishes, but swapped the meat for pork or chicken.
Is Roger gonna eat the tribble on his shoulder? Yiddish opening of Moby Dick: "Call me a schlemiel..." When you applied to spread the word of God to the savages, you told the HR guy, "Hi, I'm here for the missionary position." Original titles when Lovecraft was poor... I have to share a couple of thoughts that you provoked: I guess the 'romance' of whaling got lost fast for the young Herman. Call me a a bleeding heart, but I never got that one, anyway. Young or not, you jump ship on an island with cannibals? I agree that those "Christians" who do the opposite of what He taught are a scourge to the world and still are, but God forbid anyone wipe out cannibalism. When his friend left, if I were Herman, I would have just eaten the noodles, as they say. I hope to see you and Roger on Christmas, but if not, because things might be crazy here,(although, no humans in the oven), I wish you both great celebrations, however you choose to do so.
"Seems no matter what you do.....things get out of hand!" - Roger chuckles in the background!! 💣
I can't tell Roger's chuckle from his death rattle!

I know Standard Ebooks has the uncensored edition of Typee, for those interested.
No description has been added to this video.
People mentioned: 8 people...including...
MOBY, American musician...
Wha? 😋
@@stephenwalker2924 did Roger mention Moby?
Call me Ishmael. Better late than never, Michael, as the saying goes

Great reading report, Michael. Merry Christmas to you and Roger and family!
Roger looks ready for the Christmas episode.
I might try that Cthulhu Christmas thing. Have never read "The Call of Cthulhu." Neat. The best ideas always involve alliteration, as we all know.
Merry Xmas Micheal. And thanks for being the go too channel all year round. May 2025 keep you healthy.

@@DDB168 you eat vegans? Good to know. I will watch my back when I go to Australia!
I don't think I want to know how Roger got that Santa hat.
I can guess...but I don't want to know.

They really are. So much great stuff was reprinted in those.
I plan on reading H.P. Lovecraft on Christmas.

Good to know.
I commented on the previous video that Roger should wear something festive.
This starts up and what do I see....
As Joe Haldeman jokingly said, Call me Fish meal. . .

Sounds like the Penguin Classics edition of Typee is the real deal? Hope so, I have it at the ready, more interest now after your favorable comments.

Europeans find cannibalism distasteful. . . pun intended!
Cause the clowns taste funny.
Exactly! The exchange was "Does this taste funny to you?"
