That’s the best definition of success I’ve ever heard: ‘failing on your own terms’.
"that's how I define success: failing in my own terms."
Damn right, sir. damn right.
Genius...Guillermo is a master
Yes!!!! I agree.
Not everyone can be a great director... But a great director can come from anywhere.
quoting Ratatouille with a twist as I see, clever.
Ego is proud man
Fuck I was gonna comment that
But anyone can be a BAD director and everyone STARTS OUT as a bad director.
Nice
I envy kids now who can start early with equipment on such a low budget that we couldn't even imagine back then. But I've decided you're never too old to give stuff a go, as long as you're still breathing and moving...
Well that’s what I’m doing
Vision and passion for an idea is all it takes.
Guillermo is such an inspiration to me. He's mexican, I'm brazilian. Of course, his country is way closer to the United States and often more remembered by north americans, so I don't know how much that can affect the chances he got in Hollywood, but he still had to face a lot of prejudice and producers' mistrust before making his name respected there. And to see how he began and kept improving over the years until he simply could not be ignored anymore shows that is very possible to succeed when you're not a native american or european. You just have to be creative and passionate enough to know how to give your best with the resources you have, which in my country (and probably Mexico too) tends to be very few. That's the type of director I want to be. I wish good luck to everyone here and I hope someday we can work together on a big film.
my movie "Superman's Cat" is coming to theatres soon, filmed entirely in Iphone 3D
can't wait
you my friend have a great future a head of you
Hey! Did it come out? I’d love to see it.
Same for any other thing in life, people always complain but never actually try to do something
Totally agree. Wise, simple, and straightforward practical advice. Great sense of humor.
Directing, once you've got all the resources in place, is easier than writing. Writing is harder. Writing is the genesis of the idea. Before you can direct, you've got to have something TO direct, the idea. Therefore, in order to be a GOOD, director, you've got to be a bit of a writer.
This is the best message anyone interested in filmmaking can listen. I'm film director myself producing my own films and completly identify with this. Produce your own stuff, find your cinematic language and show it to the world. Impossible is nothing, just do it!
I want to be a producer/director and make historical dramas and biopic movies since I'm also a big history buff. I'd also like to make movie adaptions of some of my favorite books that have never been made into movies before. Unfortunately I don't have enough money for all that right now. So until then I will be testing my creative skills on writing a novel instead. I'm currently doing research for my first novel about Apache warrior Geronimo.
"Failing on your own terms. That is success". I love it! :)
Thanks, I needed it. That has made my mind more clear 💜
Tottaly agree
María BM hey do you direct
Best of luck
Do or do not there is no try.
the wise words of a master
Do, even if the end result is terrible. Just do SOMETHING.
Everyone's a CRITIC. It's always easier to be negative, to put others' work down, but to take up your arms and try to create something POSITIVE, YOUR OWN work, where you are your own worst critic, that's hard, to stare yourself in the face and deal with your own perfectionism. I've found, as a director, in the interest of getting the work DONE, I have to know when to say "it's good enough" and walk away.
Probably the best advice you can ever give.
If you want to do do something. Then go out and do it. You may not be successful immediately. But as time goes on, you get better through trial and error.
What an unprecedentedly nice man.
Yes, everyone can be a director, but not everyone can be a GOOD one. Most people's proudest directional effort is their buddies attempting flaming shots at T.G.I. Fridays.
That was a knock out advice! Simple straight to the point very useful.
I made a bunch of movies as a little kid and later as a teenager. I just think in sequential storytelling. I wish he was around when I was younger inspiring me.
He deserved his Golden Globe win for The Shape Of Water. Brilliant film.
Erik Ghast I agree.
I strongly disagree.
I’m very much in the middle.
What was so brilliant about it?
I don't want to be a director but Guillermo inspires me and gives great practical advice to use in life
I love that guy. If they ask me, who is the one person in this world you would like to meet. It is this “Gentleman, Guillermo Del Torro.”
The obstacle I have is finding ideas for stories. I want to go into animation (particularly stop motion) and as someone doing this from home, it feels very daunting.
take inspiration from your own life, take your own story, and see what parallels there are to characters people could find absolutely amazing
That's how I define success : failing on your own terms, Wow ...
So much encouragement in 3 minutes!
Great advice!
great argument, great advice
Hahaha best line "do the things"
Gotta love Guillermo.
Sisters cousin would be your cousin mr toro....
English is not his first language xD
+RUclips Commenter
Sisters cousin would be your cousin mr Toro
+RUclips Commenter he was saying your sister OR your cousin
He meant sister's camera/cousin's camera. Like "use your sister's (or) cousin's camera"
The begining of the video is awesome!😂😂
Even though I had never watched this until today, I had been looking for this video my entire life...

Guillermo's a very clever dude.
And he seems to be.humble and very nice, also down to earth.
The only things i ever directed was a 1min stop motion clip and a fake tv news show, both for high school.
Thats it lol

If anyone can be a director, then why be a director?
Ryan Landry because the goal is to be a good director not just a director
