    you don't really need the very latest new camera!
    But if you've waited years for a camera that won't overheat and stop filming during a wedding, or won't focus!
    Then this S5iix is a recommendation, especially for its price and image quality!
    I'm so glad I didn't buy a Sony camera with a set of lenses 2 years ago.
    All these horror stories about missed images due to overheating and shutting down were the deciding factor for me to wait for a good solution without having to open all the covers!

    My only real gripe with the GH5II is the LCD. They should have introduced a screen that was edge to edge, there is plenty of real-estate to take advantage of with the existing size to get 3.7 or more I think…

    If you're using the Atomos Ninja V to record you can do 10-bit 4:2:2 in 4k60 from the HDMI out on the GH5. The GH5's internal codecs are so chunky it's a major workflow bog-down to use them.

    So true. I used to get gear insecure too. I'm in the Sony ecosystem now and had an FX9, but realized "I'm not getting jobs I wouldn't have gotten with a small camera. I'm working slower and getting fewer shots than I would with a small camera. I'm now in process of selling the big cam and getting a smaller one. I've never had a client back when I was using a small cam, be it GH5 or A7iii, say "why don't you have a bigger cam?" and likewise I've never actually had a client comment "wow your big camera is very impressive" or anything similar. They literally only care about the final product.

    • @GriffinHammond
      @GriffinHammond  3 года назад

      Yeah, I've very rarely had a client comment on the camera. For most clients, the gear specs are a mystery, and uninteresting. Hopefully, they've already seen your work, and trust you'll shoot something beautiful.

("omg but she is very expensive! small camera for these big hourly rates?") Quite a relief she saw by the to Doctors when she opened her pelican box with 15 pounds of fullframe DSLR gear! Ahhhhh shooting with a loud ca-lack - its like slamming a mercedes door ;-) trustbuilding. I also startet with the gh1 in red - now happy to use the gh5 II. They didn't update the Firmware 2.7 to 2.8 an added some of these new features for the GH5 like they did for the GH5S. I feel terrible now,,
    Added video functions:
    - [Red REC Frame Indicator] function has been added.
    - It is possible to play back vertical videos vertically.
    - Users can choose to add or not to add camera orientation information in [Vertical Position Info (Video)] menu to prevent unintended image rotation in playback.
    - [Video Guide Line] function has been upgraded with more options.
    Very weak of Panasonic after this though year and even skipping on internal sensor stabilisation on the GH5S why I still use my GH5 the best camera ever.

  • @Alexrocks1253

    Griffin, do you think that Panasonic will provide a firmware update to make all lenses in the MFT lineup focus linearly? That is the only reason I am holding back switching to MFT from the Panasonic S5, because I know that I am going to get cheaper lenses that won't necessarily be able to manual focus linearly.

      Bruce, you're talking about using the GH5 for live video/webcam? I have my camera plugged into a (discontinued) Blackmagic HDMI interface. It's called the Intensity Extreme, and it plugs into my iMac via Thunderbolt 2.
      This works well with most livestreaming software I've used, and as a webcam for Zoom meetings. But for some reason, other web-based applications, like Google Meet, don't recognize the Blackmagic interface as a webcam. So my workaround is OBS. OBS software recognizes the Blackmagic device, and can output the video feed as a "virtual camera," that Google Meets recognizes.
      My Blackmagic device can be finicky, though. I often have to unplug and replug the Thunderbolt connection or the HDMI cable to get the signal setup and recognized by other software. I wonder-if I bought a modern device, like the Elgato Cam Link 4K-if I'd have better compatibility across platforms, and quicker, easier setup.

      Andreas, I don't think so. I played around with the settings today, and the punch-in magnification for manual focus only happens before hitting record-just like on the GH5. OBS doing screen capture to pry the image out of Lumix Tether is not the be-all end-all.

      @GriffinHammond  3 года назад +1

      No, it doesn't appear this camera can plug-and-play with video conferencing software. (I just tried.) You still have to use the Lumix Tether/OBS combo, which I agree, is not a great solution. For that reason, I use a dedicated HDMI interface into the computer, to use my Lumix cameras as webcams.

    Hi, thanks for the interesting video. I would like some advice, but not about the GH5 II or GH6 machine, then I will see myself what to buy. Above all, I would like some advice on the lens.
    I only do 4K documents around the world in remote areas, like in Africa, South America, etc. So I often shoot indigenous peoples in their natural habitat. In your opinion, what could be the right lens for me? Could the Leica 12-60 be sufficient as a focal range or could you recommend another one? I would like to inform that I like to travel light.
    Then ... how would you configure the room? Would you use 4K 50p 10bit (4: 2: 0) or 4K 25p 10bit (4: 2: 2)? I will do the video editing myself.
    I would like to wait a month before buying to be able to check the cost of the GH6.
    Many thanks for your thoughts.

    I hate panasonic for not updating their older lenses. We know it's not only a hardware limitation, they are making those obsolete. They forgot that the reason they still sell cameras is because we (old time users) are recommanding the Panasonic and M43... If my older lenses don't work with the GH6 autofocus, I won't buy new lenses, I'll just go to Sony... (7-14, 12-35 2.8 v1 : 35-100 v1, all leica primes 15, 25, 42.5) Lenses are long time investments, expensive pieces of glass, they are not fast fashion cheap stuff. We expect panasonic to update ALL lenses and make them work as best as possible with the newer features.

    • @GriffinHammond
      @GriffinHammond  3 года назад

      RJ is right. The old lenses aren't obsolete-I still have several version I lenses-but they simply didn't anticipate the future autofocus and stabilization capabilities. So on the newer lenses, they've built faster motors to keep up.

    • @superzero4250
      @superzero4250 3 года назад

      They have been updating their lenses: the 12-35mm/2.8 and the 35-100mm/2.8, the 14-140mm/3.5-5.6, and even the 25mm/1.4 all have mark II versions. I would suspect more will come later. But, the newer lenses would obviously be well suited. Either way, even if you went Sony or stayed with Lumix, new lenses will will always be in your future…

    • @mcronfpv8736
      @mcronfpv8736 3 года назад

      I'm sure the v2 must have some hardware upgrade (higher frequency protocol? Faster motors?), but i dont believe the v1 are not capable or doing Linear Focus, or can't receive a firmware update to increase their performance with newer bodies. Dropping support on those lenses is a bad move from Panasonic, they are acting like shitty companies and forgetting why some people go with Pana in the first place.

    • @superzero4250
      @superzero4250 3 года назад

      @@mcronfpv8736 I too believe the v1 lenses can benefit from firmware updates, but like the GH5, there are limits to what they can accomplish, which is why they felt a GH5II was warranted, as well as v2 of certain lenses.

      50 or 60fps is much better for video... 24P was a hardware limitation back in the days... Now gamers play at 144hz or even 250hz... They don't think 24P is cinematic, they think it's either choppy or too blurry. I like 50P between 1/50th to 1/200th and I'm pretty sure it'll become standard soon.

I'm sorry that my answer sounded condescending-wasn't my intention, nor do I think you're an idiot. (In my experience, framerates often generate questions like yours, so knowing nothing else about what you're seeing, I went that route.) You may be right that the new AR coating on this sensor is creating a different look, though it's not a difference I've personally noticed. Sorry I couldn't be more helpful!

      @rw3452 3 года назад

      @@GriffinHammond yes it’s the look I am referring to, not the frame rate. The AR coating seems to take away the more ‘filmic’ look dare I say. I think the guy from the question I referred to mentioned perhaps the light bouncing around gave it a ‘look’ whereas now it looks plain, digital, clean and boring perhaps. Would love to see some do a side by side or look into this. Maybe you don’t see it or perhaps like it so it is a subjective thing. @@rw3452 I did a side-by-side test today, and there's definitely a noticeable difference between the image on the GH5 and the GH5M2, though I personally would only notice in a perfect side-by-side. I doubt I'd spot the difference from project to project.
      By comparison, the GH5 image appears slightly flatter contrast and color saturation, slightly darker. The GH5M2 seems to pick up a little more yellow and green color. And as you'd expect, lens flares are half as visible on the GH5M2's AR-coated sensor.
