Before a patient starts hemodialysis (often known as just dialysis) treatment, the patient needs to have minor surgery to create an access point for treatment. An arteriovenous (AV) fistula is one type of vascular access, usually done in a patient's arm, so that the patient can connect to the dialyzer and receive treatment. You can read more about AV fistulas on our website at: www.niddk.nih.gov/health-information/kidney-disease/kidney-failure/hemodialysis#prepare-hd.
In this video, the provider is talking about an AV fistula, usually in your arm, for dialysis access. You can read more about AV fistulas and preparing for hemodialysis here: www.niddk.nih.gov/health-information/kidney-disease/kidney-failure/hemodialysis#prepare. The provider went on to say that if the patient did not have the fistula surgery and she ends up needing dialysis in the future, she will most likely require a catheter placed in her neck.
Surgery has always have anesthesia. You dont feel anything even they touch your skin and cut it. You will feel a little pain after surgery but overall its not painful. :)
