Homemade Magnetic Loop Antenna In Detail

  • I was asked for a more detailed video from my homemade loop antenna, I hope this one answers the open questions?
    The basic idea for this antenna comes from a book called: "Technik, Tips und Tricks rund um den Empfänger" (Techniques, Tips and Tricks around the receiver).
    I just changed some minor details like the copper pipe instead of copper cable.

    Great! I have a shielded loop antenna, but it does not have the tuning loop. It consists only of a 50ohm rg58 cable inside a hula hoop and a box where it is connected to a variable capacitor. It is small, and covers 60m to 13m. it is a very quiet antenna, the signals aren't that strong, but low QRM and a radio with good RF amp and AGC will do the job. Lately, I bought a ferrite bar loopstick antenna with an inductance signal booster. I connect my radio to this booster and bring the two antennas together. They complement each other and the result is much better than using each of them single handedly. Of course, you have to be patient enough to tune both antennas as you roam the bands.

    Nice video and nice work. I have had excellent experiences with my homebrew magnetic loop antenna. I use it for transmitting too.
    Thanks for the video.

    Good short instructive video. I just remembered a 2-meter loop that I had made years ago. Its sitting on a Shelf. I'm wondering if that could be converted for a short wave listening Loop. 73 John

      +nyte_owl shortwave listening Thank you, John! It's a nice antenna for swl'ing at home, it can help to null out some of the local noise. Sounds like a great project to convert your loop and bring it to life again! 73's! Hermann

    I just experianced my first qso using my qrp rig, the qrp bug has bitten me hard.
    Now I want to make my own qrp rig, from a kit of course, and make a loop antenna like urs. very nice work. What type of gain doe it have.

    I'm curious how you shaped the copper tubing without causing nasty kinks, did you use a jig or perhaps fill the pipe with sand?
    Cheers ;)

      You can also fill the copper with water and freeze it overnight. Bend your tubing then the ice melts you are good to go. This works good on refrigerator tubing.

    Very nice video, congratulations ! no matter if my question seems very very very stupid, (I'm just a listener and close to absolute zero in electronics) but you wrote : "here, the inner connector and the shielding are soldered with each other" I guess i've understood but i'm not absolutely sure "how" you did it ... (told you it was a silly question ... ) perhaps a little schema would help ? anyway thanks again :)

    Sorry to keep asking you. There is the jumper between section one and two.
    In the video I see that the jumper must be connected with the left side of the copper pipe. In my case the upper lug in the midle of my capacitor must be connected with
    the right side of the copper pipe? Right?

    • @1963Dx
      @1963Dx  9 лет назад

      Sun Collins Yes, I think so. Just try to find the connection that gives you the biggest frequency coverage.

    I have two section variable capacitor. There are either of two solder lugs on each side
    in the bottom, and two upper lugs (the one in the midle and the other in the side).
    Please, write me how can I connect them together and withe copper pipe as well.

    • @1963Dx

      Sun Collins At 0:28 of the clip you can see the connection of the capacitor quite well, there's a jumper between section one and two.

    UPDATE: OK, the loop is a 2.5m length of copper, formed very nicely. Copper is very strong, and is much easier to fashion and solder / electrically connect to.
    I am investigating using a suitable 440pf varactor diode to allow "remote" tuning of the loop, rather than the variable capacitor having to be present at the loop itself.

    • @1963Dx
      @1963Dx  9 лет назад +1

      Joseph Rotello If read carefully the description in the video you will notice that the used copper pipe had a length of 2,50m. I never mentioned that the diameter is 2,50. Thank you for your comment.
