Thank you so much for taking the time to educate us on home distilling. I love your videos. Thank you for showing me the ropes. Look forward to a new video or a farewell sign off
Hi, George it's 14:57 IN South Africa. That Needle Valve you showed us is an air flow regulating valve. It's designed to operate up to 9 bars (130.5 Lbs per SQ in) Happy Brewing and thanks for the Informative discussions. T.M. O'Brien (mike)
I'm running a three inch glass column thirty six inches long I bought from Ukraine on ebay and I love being able to watch the action of the reflux. I did remove the plates and added stainless steel rings and two rolls of copper mesh at the top then a 12 inch reflux chamber on top of that then it's a 180 elbow over to my two inch condenser that's twenty inches long.
George! A glass column? You'll put your eye out!!!! ;) These videos are great. Time after time, you answer some question I have. Outstanding. 4:30 , 7:15 , for example.
So cool you have a glass column. I want to see it run fully packed with a close up of the vapor misting up and liquids trickle down. I built a similar Liebig using fully soldered parts. I questioned the plastic end caps as soon as I spotted them. The proper way to seal the ends is with O Rings. Can't wait to see Part 2.
@@BarleyandHopsBrewing Then either the O Rings were too small or the surface finish on the pipes was rough. O Rings seal really well when they are done right.
Hi George, I’m really enjoying your channel 👍🏼💪🏼😎just wanted to let you know that although i have distilling for only 4 weeks now I also employed shrink wrap for sealing over couplings along with O-rings over the wrap that you can roll on and off to make it a re-useable seal connection. Learned a ton from you, Cheers from Port Elizabeth, South Africa
Those fast pipe connectors normally are called "John Guest" connectors. They are very nice for distilling (for carrying cooling liquids, not alcohol) and my StillDragon still makes extensive use of them.
Geez George. I bet you work harder in retirement then you did in regular life. Really looking forward to seeing this thing in action. What about the the glass bubble plate set up that I saw on one of your other videos? Thanks George you have made me a much better distiller.
Hello, George. @12:00 you can use a drop of washing up soap with water to lube the shrink wrap. It would also dissipate with the heat. It’s s trick from bike mechanics to slide the rubber on handle bars. Cheers.
That’s awesome set up George looking forward to next video also I was hoping you would do a grain run on a 3 pot still set up as I only have one of them I don’t have a column I’d just like to see how many differences there are in flavours from your personal opinion anyways happy distilling from Australia 🇦🇺
lol yes very true, im prob one of the ones that asked , sorry, but you can get so wrapped up in Georges vids i cant watch and convert at the same time, totally awesome videos, thank you George
Damn I want to see that thing run!!! I would like to see with 2 packings separated, to see if they act as separate plates ;-) Will get interesting towards the tails, when water overtakes the ethanol and begins fogging. ~Happy Distilling~
Hey ....love what u doing.......cheers......on condenser ........just use reducer coupling 3/4 to 3/8.....note u might need to drill 3/8 through. ....cheers alll m
Looking forward to part two. Would it not been simpler to just solder a copper pipe cap on each end with a hole in the center of the caps for the spirit inner tube? Does the condensor need to be serviceable and the spirit tube periodically removed or was it just a different way to skin a cat?
A drilled end cap would be the proper way to do it. You never need to service the inside of the jacket, at most it would be removing build up from tap water, but that takes years, and can be fixed by pouring some vinegar in there and letting it sit for an hour, then rinsing it out.
Hello George, I do not understand how to size the reflux condenser appropriately. How do I select appropriate surface area for the watt used to be in full reflux. 5500w, 72" - 3" packed column.
Wouldn't that be considered fractional distillation? In order to reflux that column would need to be another condenser, where you would precisely control the temperature above ethanol, below water. I would also think that fractional distillation is quite more energy efficient than refluxing.
Seems to me that if the flute had been made out of all copper instead of plastic that a well laid solder bead would have been a much better idea than using plastic, no need for modification and no leaks.
For some reason, many folks seem to be afraid of soldering. brazing, and TIG welding. I plan to build a three-inch SS column still modeled after the ones I see Jese and George use. In the shorter term, I plan to build a quickie pot still from copper scraps I have about the garage and silver solder.
For those "sharkbite" like connectors, I bought mine off aliexpress, from "distillex" or "homebrewing distillation store". They have all kinds of different types of those push lock connectors. For the condenser, I would have just slathered it up with some JB Weld.
As a glass blower i want this to work but i have my doughts. The glass you have there is not very thermally conductive . you may have a real problem getting the temp right at the top of the head without over heating the pot. I cant wait to see ya run this!. if it goes well i know what i am making tomorrow.
@@chuckdontknowdoya6100 I was not asking what type of glass it is. I know, i work boro every day and know you cant get soft glass tubing that size. Whats your point or input on the issue of the glass being not very thermally conductive? I can have Boro over 2500deg and still hold it with my bare hand just a few inch's away. So can you see my concern for the head temp? Boro may work great but just take longer to start running. I want to hear and see the test he does and then go from there
@@toms6773 it is my understanding that it's stronger the regular glass and able to handle the temperature better as for maintaining temperature I've tried my both ways and uninsulated just adds to the reflux action I've been using one for about a month.
How long can you leave the sugar wash sitting around - days, weeks, months even? And do you clear and siphon it off before storage or just before you run it?
I was away for work so my sugar wash sat for three months before I could distill it. It had settled out fully so I racked it directly into my boiler. Perfect!
How sensitive is the glass I mean like bump in it hitting it with something accidentally how thick is the glass hello George thank you very much Vernon

You could just use bung rubbers to seal the pipe!
Plastic is the first failure....
Either braze metal copper ends on or silicone the ends in.
Looks like you had some time to organize the garage!
I did!
Just one question why do you go with cross flow and instead of with flow?
If you're talking about the condenser water, it maximizes the efficiency of heat transfer between the vapour and the cooling water.
Awesome ! #happydistilling

use an o-ring. you'll have to make the groove for it.
