  • In this pencil drawing lesson, I take you through the steps to re-create this landscape scene of a small boat resting on a shore. For my latest drawing program, please visit www.drawawesome.com
    ** Materials List **
    1. Paper: I used Strathmore Bristol Board (Vellum surface, which has more tooth than the Smooth surface). But any drawing or sketching paper will do.
    2. Pencils: I used 4 in total - H or HB, 2B, 4B and 8B or 9B. Any brand is fine.
    3. Other Bits: Kneadable eraser, craft knife or pencil sharpener, piece of grease proof paper to protect your surface (printer/copier paper will do).

Good to see you uploading here. If an artist is good hell make money from ads and clicks. He doesn't need to ask people to pay for classes others provide for free, negate you'll make the money from ads. I can't imagine what type of person would buy an art class or a download or a print. Not when there is nothing new in art technique since the beginning of the written word. Just go to the library or the net and get all over needs without spending a dime.

Your videos are the best out there in terms of sketching from scratch. I've seen a ton of other artists try to do what you do and no one comes close at actually demonstrating these skills. Many talk about these concepts (comparing angles, he need for strong contrast, shadow shapes, focal points) but very few actually show how to do it. For anyone who wants to learn from scratch how to use different types of mediums, I highly recommend Phil's Draw Awesome course. It takes almost a year to complete. Most comprehensive program on the internet for a very reasonable price.

This video was AWESOME! I really liked that we got to see everything from start to finish in nearly real time. I see tutorials all the time about how to draw/sketch the individual elements. So the fact that this was an entire landscape was really nice. I'm so glad you're going to be posting more videos! I can't wait to see what comes out next.

I HIGHLY recommend his Draw Awesome course. He teaches you how to use lots of different mediums in addition to graphite, including charcoal, pen and ink, pastels, color pencil, watercolor/ink, and more. It's $29.99 per month and worth every penny.

Thank you very much! it worked wonderfully for me! very happy with the result. For those who struggle with the boat as I do here's how I overcame drawing it: I traced it from the screen using a printer paper and drew a square around it. then I did a few drawings using negative space and it worked. lastly I drew a square a on the drawing paper and got a good shaped boat. mind the size and place of the square.

Great tutorial. I followed along just this minute. That's now the second drawing I've done today that looks like the thing it's meant to look like, which is fantastic. I've not drawn in several decades (I was bad then, so not much to go on), so that's an achievement for me! I didn't have the correct paper or pencils, but I had a little notebook with textured paper and H, HB and 2B pencils and a normal rubber and it was fine. I wasn't looking for instant genius, just some inspiration to get me started, and this helped very much. I will upload to the ArtKula thing as requested to thank you for your video (I've requested an invite). I write funny (I'm a leftie) and it tends to smudge the picture, but I managed to avoid for the most part. Is it bad form to move the paper (notebook in my case) round at funny angles rather than move my hand and body round the workpiece? I don't want to start with horrendous habits.

While watching the video I watched it fairly close and was not really seeing many of the details you were putting in on the distant cliff side. Once I set the video about 2 feet away and observed that same area it completely made those subtle details really give the cliffs character and I could see the details very well. Hence this is why you mentioned several times to step back and observe the picture.

    Hi Phil...
I disagree with your thoughts on leaning the boat toward the center of the page. To me that position leads my eyes all the way to the left of the page, which is opposite of your intention of drawing the eyes towards the center/right.
    Just something to think about.

I worked from the colour photograph, and was really surprised by the intense darkness in the shadow of the boat in the black and white photo, in comparison to the right hand cliffs. I made the cliffs too dark, which really took the eye away from the boat and ruined the overall effect. I'll try again!
