This is a very good idea :) There is also a lot of glitter nailpolish etc, that can give cool effects
Cool, saw my piece. Glad I could help =D. I hope to be there on Saturday, I am still moving. Thank you for everything. You, Joel, Angus, and a few others have really helped me as I am getting started with my little Monoprice Mini and Cura. I hope to eventually grab a copy of Simplify3D in the next few months. I like the concept of having the control over the supports. Thank you again.

Great idea!
I was doing something similar but instead of nail polish, I use dollar store acrylic artist paint.
This is a water soluble paint that goes on plastic very well. Before filling in the embossed areas, I spray the item with a primer. Then I paint the entire model and let dry. Next I spray the model with a coat of varnish. Once dry, I choose a colour of acrylic paint and fill in the embossing. After everything is dry, the unwanted paint is easy to remove with a slightly damp paper towel. Lastly, I put a final coat(s) of varnish to seal everything up. I have not had to use acetone, and my models come out beautiful. I hope you give this a try. It really works great!
I just found this !!! Awesome !!!!! Really COOL !!!! I stared painted some prints before the video ended. Thanks
Thanks for this video. I'm curious as to how deep you printed the relief in the PLA. THanks!
I've jusrt made some bullet dice for Gaslands and this is ideal. Thanks.
good idea I was gonna buy a spray gun kit could cost 2 to 300 vary informative on a side note my printer works good but all the sudden I hit play and the print head doesn't move but temps work and it counts down as if it were printing any ideas or suggestions
I wonder if you could airbrush a color then use the acetone. You could make some really cool color effects!
Very informative video, Joe. I wish that I had known about this a week ago, when I printed a Harry Potter Ravenclaw Coat of Arms. The nail polish would have worked perfectly on the name.
Dang it. Hopefully it's not too late for someone else. Beauty of the internet, this isn't going anywhere.
I've tried this using nail polish remover where the primary ingredient is acetone and I am not happy with the results. The remover has an effect on the PLA, making it cloudy and dull. I have not gotten some straight acetone to see if that has the same results. So, instead I fill in the print and then sand it with some sandpaper and the results are much better.
warhammer wash paints also work really well.

Just a friendly BTW. I very much enjoy your videos and have learned many tips & tricks from them but this one has me concerned. You mentioned several times that acetone is non-toxic so I recommend that you Google "msds acetone"(material safety data sheet). You will find that it is very much a toxic liquid and needs to be used following strict safety precautions to avoid serious health problems. Thanks for creating & sharing these great videos, I look forward to the next one.
That's fair enough.
I would consider it non-toxic because the chances of it killing you are very low and it requires some considerable quantities and long term exposure before it starts to damage the kidneys, skin, and short term memory.
GASP, maybe I forgot. Maybe the acetone is effecting me. I need to.... what are we talking about again?
hello. Please help!
I have a question
when I print something the prints come out looking really bumpy on the outside.
What should I change to fix that?? Help!
First thing I'd check is your filament diameter. Assuming that's correct, your filament extrusion multiplier is probably too high. I'd say lower it by 10% and test print until it looks good. Try that and let me know what happens.
I'd agree its not toxic... Certainly its not on the list of toxic materials we have at university. We have quite an extensive list in the food production lab where I work...
I've read the msds several times. Maybe you two should read it also then research medical history on it, then maybe, just maybe you'll have enough information and common sense to realize it does have long term side effects when exposed to small amounts repeatedly. Why not just simply recommend wearing gloves and a painters mask. Then maybe look at the many auto body painters that suffer from exposure even wearing a mask. I should know ,my father was one of those painters and died from it. Have a nice life when you get to the point you can hardly breathe.
I've been using nail polish as cheap, rugged paint for years - especially fishing lure - but never thought of this. One question, though... does the polish not get in layer lines and blemishes in the finish?
If you're layer lines are that deep you may need to print at a higher resolution. I recommend 0.15mm layers max.
Ummm isn't Acetone going to bleach out your build if it's a color. I had a project that was blue and the painter'sitape stuck to the bottom of the build. I used the Xylene an the blue project turned white. Fellow at the paint store told me Acetone will do the same thing as well as melt the PLA?
I use 1500 grit sandpaper wet with Gel-Gloss then rinse with hot water from the tap brushing off the Gel-Gloss with an old toothbrush. It smooths and shines.
Hi there...i surprised no one else has asked... 😱, But where did you get that model of the POD. Its awesome 👍
Um... what's POD? I think every model featured in this video I modeled.
I have half a mind to send him samples of all my nail polish, lol. Add acetone and paint. 😂😂😂
LOL You dropped your straw in the acetone! 😜
Yup.
Twice, in fact.
How does the acetone and nail polish work on PETG?
Same as PLA. PetG doesn't react to the acetone.
if u dilute the acetone it won't affect the abs but will remove the nail polish ✌
What ratio?
Can I glue a broken 3d part with clear nail polish?
Not effectively. Nail polish isn't a bonding agent, it just covers it. If you want to bond it, use super glue or something like that.
Non-toxic? Phew! Thank god that MSDS sheet is wrong about central nervous system damage on skin contact and much worse problems from consumption. I was worried for a while.
theflamingpi Yes, you are correct. I still consider it non toxic because of the quantity you have to consume before you see any ill effects, and because those effects are pretty mild and do not include death. But I may be a little lax about what I worry about.
To give you credit, we do routinely sit next to plastic melting machines in an unventilated environment. I suppose everything is relative.
Was it just my shoddy government computer or did that last clip have a serious case of dubs disease? Kinda cool. like 3D kung fu theater. OBTW, not that I am complaining, but the word "prominently" was used in regards to my tile, however it was on the end credits for about 2 seconds and then partially obscured by your thumbnail for the previous video. My kids may have some comments for you about that, but I think the tile looks great! Their dreams of internet fame have been dashed...LOL. All in good fun brother. Thank you for what you do and keep up the great work!
Bonus points for Kung Fu theather. I figured out what the problem was with the lipsync too late, so I hit it with a disclaimer instead.
Yeah, sorry about "prominently". I looked at your tile, saw that it was one of the ones colored, so I assumed it happened on video without checking the footage. (Apparently it was one of the ones done off camera.) I'll try to make another video and give it a little more air time. It will be a part of all future videos, though, so it'll have plenty of time to be seen.
No worries either way, but my kids would get a kick out of it, maybe a shout out to my daughters Jolynn, Jamie, and my son, Jeffery (9,6, and 3 respectively). Great video too, I will definitely be using that trick. I was using the M600 command to pause and switch filaments but this seems pretty easy and a better effect. Thanks again for a great video!
i love the smell of acetone in the morning...... only joking .... sprinkle glitter on heat bed and print on it ... u mite have done this before but it's cool
When used normally, acetone has low toxicity, not NO toxicity.
Did you intend to present the video in glorious smell-o-vision?
Siana Gearz Did you not insert your nose plugs?
I found nail polish on ABS caused shrinkages which caused warpage.
That's prob'ly be cause of the solvent in the nail polish
OOH Professor, I hope your Wife is not mad using her Nail polish
That's my nail polish. Gotta be pretty.
It's not called a MAN-incure for nothing. ;)
why not use normal paint?
You can. But nailpolish wipes away cleanly with acetone.
3D nerd or of that ilk discovered that acetone is a superglue to PLA, so it gets megasticky :P, might be nice to keep the paint on.
hunn20004 I have never gotten any pla to react to acetone. I've even set pla prints in acetone bath and they didn't get sticky or soft in the slightest. idk how people say it works
It very much depends on the blend of PLA. Some do. None that I ever have used do, though.
3D Printing Professor I imagine, most expensive pla I've used was $18 and that was woodfill. the average price I've paid was like $15 . FYI I've used a lot of"the fox smart" pla it comes from here in the us and is super cheap and reliable. only time I ever had an issue, I emailed them and they responded right away with an apology and suggestions. turns out it was my temp settings
Cuz it's the pick! of destiny, child
Dat Tie, dough...
Friendly reminder: DO NOT use your wife/mother/sister/etc nail polish in this. They'll rip your lungs out for it faster than any acetone could reach it
Duke Magus This is the real warning I should have started this video with.
If you paid for it, it's yours not theirs.
Maybe you want to pick up polution as video idea in general?
3dprint.com/233507/more-testing-shows-that-3d-printer-emissions-are-still-problematic/
A lot of these polutants are linked to cancer, right? So, how to protect workers in an office enviroment? How to protect yourself at home?
Maybe as a professor you can dive into this research study, it's methodology, it's findings and provide some critics or opinion on it?
Cheers.

At this time the best thing you can do is have an enclosure and vent to the outside.
I am shocked to hear that Acetone is non-toxic
I may have had to learn some since making that statement.
acetone is toxic! what the heck are you talking about! read the msds. it can DAMAGE THE CNS KIDNEYS, AND LIVER!
You are correct.
