    Brilliant informative video. Had my 500 bullet iron barrel since new in 2008. Never done my oil change as thoroughly as this. I certainly will from now on. Good to show in daylight as well. Thanks for sharing.👍🏻

    Thank you for this very informative video and another I watched of yours explaining the oil system. Although I'm in Australia our winters see plenty of minus 5C nights so the warning about using 20/50 in a cold climate and the tip about 10/40 semi synthetic are very relevant. Not long since I did my first oil change on a newly acquired 96 model 500 and wish I'd seen your video beforehand. Got most of it right but there were a few handy little tips in there that will make life easier next time. The most time was spent making a new timing cover gasket. It had been on so long that it was impossible to remove intact.....

      @@Volcanicbrown1878 It's 98% all there and original. The previous owner travelled to India, purchased the bike new (around 95/96), brought it back to Australia with heaps of spare parts (mostly cables, handles and filters). He intended to rebuild it as a custom Enfield, but he lacked the time and expertise. I got it going the other day, and it runs fine, so I won't pull the engine down. I have time issues also, and I was originally looking for a bike that was fully restored. This bike was too good to pass up!

    I think that what I love about these simpler bikes is that they remind me of growing up with older utility tractors like International H and M models John Deere A, simple to maintain and work on and they didn't kill your hearing to be beside when they ran, in fact it is a wonderful sound.

    Excellent video of this RE Bullet oil change. I haven't got one of these bikes but nevertheless, I had to follow each stage through to the end.
    My little 1982 Honda CB250rs oil change is very easy but the filter gauze is inside the right hand crank case and this really needs to be inspected and cleaned when changing the oil. This is a downside, as you need a new gasket each time. Seeing you re using the gasket on the RE crankcase made me wonder, can I get away with re using the one on the Honda. I do enjoy your down to earth honest videos, so keep then coming.👍

    • @Volcanicbrown1878
      @Volcanicbrown1878  6 месяцев назад +1

      @patrickgreenman8248 the 500's make a lot more heat due to the larger capacity. The oil pumps are a little bigger too, so circulate more oil around the engine which allows the oil to absorb more heat.

    • @Volcanicbrown1878
      @Volcanicbrown1878  5 месяцев назад +1

      @Eastsussexbiker You HAVE to take the timing cover off to pre fill the filter housing other wise the engine runs dry, If the shims fall off the cam shafts, there is no way to work out easily which shaft they were fitted to, Ease the cover away from the engine and you will see if the shims stay in place,

    With regards to all that "Carnation Milk" in your oil, i'm glad that it isn't just me who gets it. Mine foams up in & around the Oil Cap especially. It reminds me of the days when we had Duckhams Oil. That caused that. If we was talking about cars, you'd associate that 'foaming' with a blown head gasket with water in the oil.

    • @Volcanicbrown1878
      @Volcanicbrown1878  6 месяцев назад

      @AmitUP-tp2kw I only have one AVL engined bike in my collection. They can be made to go very well but some have faulty hardening of the crank pin and can suffer from big end failure at around 5000 miles. The oil pumps are of a more modern design but are still driven by the same oil pump drive shaft, which is the weak point in the cast iron engines. They were not made for very long before the UCE engine was produced to replace the AVL.

      @@Volcanicbrown1878 I have found an avl thunderbird 2006 model with 23000 km on it. It has been left in the parking for last 2 years. My question is can this crank pin heardening be solved?

      @Volcanicbrown1878  6 месяцев назад

      @@AmitUP-tp2kw If it has done 23,000km without a failure, then the engine will be ok.
      It was only some AVL engines that suffered from the faulty hardening. If it does get big end failure, it is very straightforward to fit a new crankpin to the flywheels.

  • @basilwatson1
    @basilwatson1 6 месяцев назад +1

    Those oil pump drives are a " wear point" The "bullet " is just ok there is not a lot of fat in the design, So when people fit a "larger" oil pump it increases the loading on that oil pump drive, ( and as u noted "thick oil" Couple that with " loose" manufacturing tolerances ( incorrect gear tip loading ) and you could get oil pump drive failure ( ask me how I found out !) other than that its a great engine IMHO !

    • @Volcanicbrown1878
      @Volcanicbrown1878  6 месяцев назад

      @basilwatson1 Yes the oil pump driveshaft is the Achilles heel on these engines and that's why you need to inspect them every oil change. I didn't help when the Indian factory deleted the pressure relief valve.

  • @bulletboy4288
    @bulletboy4288 3 месяца назад

    My year 2000 500 suffers from watery oil, even with a 13 mile run to work, I found that if dropped the oil level towards minimum that helped loads, just keep an eye on it. While you have the timing case off, retard the inlet cam by one tooth, it pretty much returns the tune to British spec and is more suitable for higher road and engine speeds , i did and noticed the difference, great bikes.

    • @Volcanicbrown1878
      @Volcanicbrown1878  3 месяца назад

      @bulletboy4288 The 350's are a lot more prone to condensation than the 500's. Retarding the inlet cam on the 350's makes very little difference without porting the head and raising the compression ratio.....I have tried it! The 350 Redditch built Bullet's go about the same as the Indian built versions, nothing between them.

    Good video Mr Brown , the old girl was ready for an oil change .
    That oil looks like Freddie Dobbs' coffee ! 🤣
    I don't recall my old Bullet getting any " Carnation milk" in the oil , perhaps that was because I rode it too hard being young and daft at the time .
    Maybe the Indian bikes have a different breather .
    People can be forgiven for thinking it's an old bike , your 2005 model is not much different to the 1955 model .
    Cats aren't fooled as easily though , they know it's not condensed milk . [ Different tin ]

    • @Volcanicbrown1878
      @Volcanicbrown1878  6 месяцев назад

      @dungspreader That oil was the worst I have ever seen after 1250 miles for sure.
      The Indian breather has an oil catch pot, which is always full of water! I think I will delete it as it's the oil I want to keep, not the water!
      My mate has a 1955 trials 500 Bullet that was completely worn out. He bought a 2006 Indian 500 and transferred all the engine internals into his 55! Barrel, piston, crank, cams, everything fitted perfectly! All his worn out junk from the 55 went into the Indian cases and back into the bike, which he sold as a restoration project.
      I might take a sample of that old oil round to Freddiie Dobbs for his appraisal, it's a little bit slicker than he is.
      The cats aren't stupid, but they know I am!!

      @PeterClayton-p3k Oil change? Just undo the drain bolt and when empty refill through the filler on the top of the box. There is a level plug on the back of the box, when you see oil oozing out of there, your done!
