In the past 18 months I've probably spent $15,000 on astrophotography related gear. That's an insane amount for me, I've never spent so much money on so much stuff so quickly. Dr. Bayliss probably did that in an afternoon as an afterthought.
In fairness Josh it took me a full year...
Thanks for the shoutout - I knew you could do it! Looking forward to the second pier and rig coming up soon!
well deserved!
Dark Rangers rule!!!!
Great to see Michelle and this interview with Nico
It’s nice to feel part of a worldwide community
You are the G.O.A.T when it comes to helping and promoting the Astro community Ryan
It's wonderful to see this level of enthusiasm. What a fantastic interview. Thank you, Nico and Michele.
It was a nice talk, but I would like to see the observatories.
I’ve been watching all of your observatory tour videos Nico, great work! I think I’m convinced that roll off roof (or something similar) is the best way to go.
I want to have my own (or rather build my own) observatory under dark skies someday. Hopefully in the next ten years… I’m 20 right now. :)
Lastly, one small request… In future videos can you please have a section discussing what made them choose the location? Having an idea of sqm/bortle scale, seeing conditions, transparency, etc. would be really helpful.
And as always, thanks again for this awesome work, and clear skies!
In my case it was simply where I have lived for 20 years.
I didn’t expect this video to be such a pleasure to watch when I clicked. Thanks for sharing!
was it the dog?!
I’m available for adoption! I’m only 63.
😎
Nice to see someone who's so fired up about astronomy that has the means to chase that passion! Really nice, dream setup! 👍👍
thanks for that - I'm totally hooked!!! Great community too
Wow, what a great interview!
I need an astro dog! So, I can finally build an observatory! 🤣
That's not a dog that's a mythological beast
He kinda is lol
amazing interview. It's also nice to see someone doing both visual and astrophotography.
She is sharp and humble! ❤
aw thanks for that. I'm technically challenged so it has taken me awhile to get it all together but now I'm an astro addict!
@@MicheleHernandez-d2e Sorry! you are sharp, humble and... aw! 😅
I love my state! I just escaped from the clutches of ZWO.
She's got it going on..
thanks - I think that's a compliment :-)
Great interview and tour, Nico!! I've been to Michele's observatory a couple of times and it's absolutely beautiful, not to mention that her enthusiasm is extremely contagious!
that is kind of you Greg! I'm very lucky to have so many astro nuts who live nearby -truly blessed!
Great video and yes Ryan is the GOAT when it comes to helping the Astro community (as you are Nico)
This ZWO hate by Ryan is getting a little tiresome. I appreciate that he has had issues but the ZWO system has enabled many people to get into the hobby at a reasonable price point. Nina is Windows only and would require a system change for us Mac users before even considering the cost of the Primaluce computers which are now being promoted as “the answer”. Some people drive a Porsche some a Ford, two ways to do a similar job, choice can very much depend on circumstances.
I mean, in his defense, they do have pretty weak customer service plus I don't like how they lock you into ALL ZWO stuff. I used it for a year and liked it and as I mentioned, I love the ASI air but they could open up that platform so you could use the ASI air with other brands and all would be good. I just didn't like that you had to buy every single component from ZWO. But I agree with you that the ZWO is good bang for the buck at least until it malfunctions and then you are up the creek.
Biggest issue I have withe the ASI Air is it is another case of Chinese thieves ripping off Open Source GLU software and making a profit from other people's hard work. Anyone using an ASI Air is basically handling stolen property..
ZWO “locked-in”? You mean cameras? cuz my AsiAir plus works with my Ioptron GEM45 mount, Canon RA, iPad Pro , Skywatcher 120ED. WO Finder…so not EXACTLY locked out.
Re service - had an issue with an EAF and they did replace it after video confirmation. And full disclosure a Zwo camera on the finder.
It’s unlikely Ryan or any other tech support will ever come out and hang here for 4 nights, I think that’s breathing some rarified air for almost all of us.
Anyway…it’s all working well. And when it doesn’t, I think there’s enough to buy another one.
I would love to know how much that observatory on the hill costs. That is my husbands dream.
I mean, the truth is it's the LABOR that is expensive - if you can build it yourself, you could save money. The actual materials were not that much but 3 guys working for 2-3 weeks was not cheap.
Amazing what a large bank account can overcome.
“…I got sucked into astrophotography…” one most own the sickness 😂
I'm so owning it! but no regrets...
Maybe a comma corrector would be nice here, but she is fantastic. ❤
wow... That's a really nice observatory.
Fun video, thanks for sharing (both of you). I see comments about money but have come to the conclusion that's a matter of priorities in this hobby. I can drive an $80k pickup truck or a very, very nice astro rig. ;)
well said - those comments are on the rude side - it's not a cheap hobby but no one is judging how much you do or do not spend!
Man im jealous. She has a really nice setup.
Woof! Great interview, awesome digs. Clear skies!
This was GREAT Nico. Thank you. :)
Michelle is a fantastic community member and very supportive to other amateur astronomers like myself down here in Australia 🇦🇺
Ryan and the Dark Rangers community I am a part of are so encouraging and such a nice group of people, it’s great to see that acknowledged by this clip Nico!
Cheers Simon
Aw thanks Simon- you almost made me cry 🙂
really nice video, Michele sounds like a blast to talk with
Great video. I love this series. Really helps for setup ideas. As an aside, she could probably power a small city for a decade or so with all that energy!
That made me laugh !! I do have a lot if energy
@@toptieradmissions1989 😊
Ummm … why did we not get a tour of the inside of this observatory ?
A dream for both astrophoto and visual !! 🤩 Love it
Very cool. I thought that I was in the 1% by having a custom built pier with electrical and ethernet. Along with a telegismo.
I don't understand the need for a bino viewer to compensate for deteriorating eyesight. I'm slightly nearsighted, enough to make the stars blurry with the naked eye, but I have absolutely no issues using regular eyepieces. You focus until it looks sharp, and you're done. It might look blurry for people with perfect eyesight, who"d have to fiddle with the focus knob until it's sharp for them, but those people would also have trouble with the bino viewer that's set for your diopter too. So what's the problem we're trying to solve here?
Maybe it's the diopters in both eyes but I find that I can see a LOT better using both eyes than with one. I've used eyepieces for over 20 years and just a few months with the binoviewers - I also love that you can change the magnification by just pushing/pulling those levers so I can get 3 views in seconds instead of changing eyepieces. I'm just reporting on my "lived" experience that I can see objects in amazing detail using both eyes. It's been life changing. I don't work for the bino viewer company but I do love them!
Money!
What an awesome woman! Love the energy and love she puts forward. Also, love a fellow keeb enthusiast who also enjoys our night sky!
really? that's awesome -tell me more!
Thanks for sharing. 👍🏻👍🏻
Nice.
Great video, Dark Rangers Inc is my go to as well.
Nico, inspiring devotion to astrophotography. But, and it's a big one, for those of us who love the fiddly bits, why no tour of the observatory equipment? Unless there's a part 2???
I'm open to part 2!
Really nice interview, I love the feel of community that is present in our hobby! That roll off observatory looks absolutely gorgeously built, the rooftop obsy looks wonderfully niche. Perhaps we could have a round two video where we get to see the obsys like in the other videos in this series?
tell Nico! Happy to host round 2
I recommend playback at 2x speed.
Awesome. Exhausting but awesome.
What’s her @ I want to follow and support!!
Loved the interview with Michele, both observatories are awesome. I agree with Michele on astronomy communities are always helpful. Great interview Nico!🎉
thanks Richard :-)
Not related to this post but I have to ask if your Facebook account was hacked, cause we have seen there in days, a lot of not-so-nice pictures, posted in your name?
My account is fine, but I have an impersonator. I reported it, but not sure what else I can do
@@NebulaPhotos I was sure there was something wrong. Thank you for your fast answer! I hope you will be back soon on FB. Cheers from Munich!
❤❤
Great video!
Very cool!
Mechanical Keyboards!!!
I know right? I got really deep into it!
What a great combo of hobbies!
I admit the keyboard thing is a bit niche but I love typing on them...
Hello Nico, nice video. I have a question about the binocular eyepiece. What is it, who does sell it and how much did it cost ?
Denkmeier Binotron - Ed Ting here on youtube reviewed the system back in February.
www.denkmeier.com/shop There are different options and add-ons, but you are looking at around $1500 with matched eyepieces.
The observatory looks great but I don't get the point of building one when you are literally surrounded by a dense forest blocking your view all around except zenith.. maybe 50°+ or so?
it might look that way but actually that is not true -in all directions but due south I can get down to 25-30. If I knew how to share, I'd show you my imported horizon but there is enough of a clearing that I get pretty clear views in all directions with a bit less due south (35 ish)
Great location, especially for astrophotography. I routinely image from a narrow courtyard with only 60 degrees view from east to west and just barely a view of Polaris over the garage. The view to the south is over the neighbor's roof forty feet away and maybe down to 25 degrees. I get maybe four hours on each target as they move overhead and often hit three targets each night. The high angles are ideal since they mean I am only looking through 1/4 to 1/6th as much atmosphere as at the horizon. I would love to have grass and trees surrounding me that don't boil with the heat of the day. For the occasional special event, the portable rig comes out.
