- Why do medical implants like insulin pumps and prosthetic knees need replacement? Explore how the immune system fights implants and how new devices are trying to help.
--
Insulin pumps improve the lives of millions of people with diabetes around the world by monitoring blood sugar, delivering insulin, and preventing the need for constant finger-pricking. But there’s a catch: they’re temporary. And it’s not only insulin pumps that have this problem, but all bodily implants. Why is that? Kaitlyn Sadtler details how our immune system reacts to foreign bodies.

The “needle” attached the to the pump is usually called a cannula and it doesn’t sense glucose levels. Unless you have a separate device for monitoring glucose levels you still have to do finger pricks even if you’re on a pump.
yes and no, some meters spealk to an additional sensor and now, to my suprise as well, can auto adjust the basal rate every 5 min. but i find those bits of the video not correct as you do. its over simplified and it bothers me..:)
@@ru4realmate_ukMB hey,if you think thats oversimplified immagine how doctors felt about the way they described the immune system
This is the comment I was looking for :D Sure some people have a closed loop set up but the insulin pump is just for pumping insulin, as the name suggests. You need extra bits if you want to monitor glucose levels - it talks to the pump but it's not the pump itself.
Otherwise, good vid :)
Relate boi!👌🤘🏻
@@ru4realmate_ukMB Has to be oversimplified. Sometimes, enlightening actually darkens. Just, sometimes, the more you explain, the less it's understood. These videos are for the general public, children, even, so, they have to keep them simple.
While it's a bit funny to think that the body is just trying to protect itself, it would be a huge problem if implants couldn't do their job properly. I'm glad the doctors and scientists and many other people are finding ways to make peace with a person's immune system. Thank you for the good video.

What insulin pump is she referencing? I’ve never heard of one that monitors blood sugar and work as a pump. The CGM is always separate
They definitely don't exist here in Australia and I'd be incredibly surprised if they existed elsewhere. Pumps can connect to CGM but as you said it's separate
@@thechelseasmiler they don't exist in Denmark either. I am almost positive it's not in the US, or the rest of Europe.
It is available in UK. You can search it. And while not everything written in the internet is true, find the sites that is legit to gain informations. If you search for attached insulin pump, you will know that it is a thing.
They exist but are a rather new system that often have not found their way onto the general market yet.
I will (grumpily) accept that combined CGM and insulin delivery DO exist. Given the animation is clearly a Medtronic 500/700 series pump, it DEFINITELY doesnt have those two functions in one implant.
I've been wearing this model of pump for 10+ years, and I wish it was one implant!

I love the animation... Just wanted to say that
As a type 1 diabetic on a pump I love the depictions of what’s happening in my body’s everyday. However must note that’s not really how insertion set (pump canulas) are inserted. Also my immune system is currently suppressed and so one time I accidentally forgot to change my set for 10 days and it was still working. Usually you can see scar tissue in the tube but there was zero cell build up in the tubing . Maybe that’s tmi but I thought it was wild

Pump and cgm (continuous glucose monitor) require different insertions in different parts of the body. And also it’s not a needle that’s stays in your body, it’s a plastic tube called a cannula. Probably trying to simplify things but just thought I’d point it out
*Kim Kardashian wants to know your location.*
Oh, you're so smart. :P
I'm thinking of getting metal legs. It's a risky operation, but it'll be worth it.
why don't you have legs already
Actually, the needle is where the insulin is delivered through only. The glucose levels are sensed independently on a paired continuous glucose monitoring device, which is implanted separately. Otherwise, very informative video!

0:24 ummmm being a diabetic myself that's far from our reality, I'm well aware those closed looped systems exists but they are still unaffordable for the common diabetic (and it's usually two different separate devices the needle and the glucose sensor). Felt like this wasn't very accurate.
I'm glad the general premise was close (no horrid misinformation), but you're right. I have never even heard of a pump+CGM in one (I have Type 1 and have lots of online diabuddies all over the world)
