I’ve got a 2012 tiger 800xc and my mate has the 2017 tiger 1200, we were out yesterday riding around wales and this is a good comparison because there’s not a lot in it from what we could see! The 1200 definitely pulls away from the 800 but not like you would expect and the only time I really noticed it pulling harder was on a long hill where the 800 started to lose puff... Love my tiger and if I had to pick between with a new bike it would be the 800 for me!
Thank you so much for posting this I was seriously contemplating trading my 800xc on the 1200 for more power but after watching this I will stay with my 800 thank you.
Nice vid. Being a big guy I thought of purchasing 1200, but decided to stick with 800. The 1200 has significantly more power and torque but 800 feels more nible in the city and being lighter is better off road. In terms of acceleration the difference is only apparent after 130-140 kmh which is fine with me. :))
If off roading is your thing, then I think the Tiger 800 is definitely the right choice being the lighter bike and having the larger 21 inch wheel. Also, still a capable comfortable touring bike or commuter. Just a win win from your point of view. 👍 Safe Riding 😁
I guess it's the 30% power loss of the 1200's shaft drive that is making the drag race results so close. The 800 is a good choice, lovely smooth engine. I'm torn between the 800 and the Africa Twin.
Hi midnightrider287, we are quite local to Consett and you're quite right also, we have some great roads especially to the west heading towards the Pennines 😁 ... Thanks for watching 👍
Brilliant vid! I have the 1200 and I'm considering changing to the 800 as it's a fair bit lighter. The big issue is the engine performance 'drop' and lack of shaft drive. This video is exactly what I've been trying to find. I love the triple but dislike the dealers. Big thumbs up from me!
It's a tough choice as they're both fantastic machines, for me though, having a shaft drive and therefore having no chain maintenance is why I chose the Explorer. Since this video, we have both upgraded to the new Tiger 1200 ( see other vids ) but my son who had the Tiger 800 has said that he misses the 800 and maybe should have bought the new Tiger 800 instead. I love my new 1200 and think it's on a different level altogether compared to the old Explorer ...
Looks like I'm just a bit down the road from you and am often around those roads - I'll keep an eye out for two Tiger 1200s as i'm sure you must get up weardale way. Nice video and a bit of fun. I've been thinking of maybe trading my z1000sx in for a 1200 but am put off by its weight. And I had thought the 800 might be the answer but I can see from what you've done that the performance gap will always be there, so thats a no-go i think for me. I was in the Alps with mates last year and saw how good the 1200 was coming off the hairpins in the Alps. I had to drop a gear to keep up or just accept a 4 cylinder needs the revs. Managed to reduce the gap a little by getting on the throttle a bit early but none of that was a problem for the Trumpet. Or the lad on the Aprillia twin!!
Thanks for watching, The Tiger 1200 has a truck load of torque and just pulls away in any gear. It will never beat any sport bike regarding top speed but for how long are we at top speed anyway 🤔 Just a fantastic all rounder 👍
Explorer is comfortable all bells and whistles but heavy, heavy and heavy. I'd prefer the 800 I'm torn with adventure bikes I like the new vstrom 650/1000, tiger 1050 and the tiger 800. And they all feel comfortable im 6 foot 2 and 15 stone mainly normal roads some long distance any advice.
The problem is I think, theres just too much choice. Choosing a bike is down to personal preference and for me the Tiger was the right choice ... Firstly it has a shaft drive ( I hate chain maintenance ) Then carrying capacity for touring, comfort for myself and pillion. Just a few of my reasons. If your riding normal roads and long distance trips, I wouldn't let the weight put you off as once your up and running you'll not notice the weight. Take some test rides and see which one your happier with. Its a difficult choice but as long as theres a smile in your helmet, then surely its the right choice ... 🤔😁
@@gtube153 yea I will be carry a pillion so I have to factor that in. The 1050 seems capable for that with ease. To be honest the 1200 is a bit daunting like the BMW's to me but yea the shaft drive would make life a bit easier it's just slow riding and filtering that would bother me. Maybe some advance rider lessons are in order.
Trying to choose between the 2019 tiger 800 xca and the 1200 xca, what a hard decision, both bikes have so many different features from one another. I would like the 1200 for all the great features but a lot of reviews complain about the weight and the heat that comes through your legs and crotch, maybe not a concern for cool weather climates but that concerns me for California summer temps 80F to 112F, I can't imagine going off road very much, I'm looking for something very comfortable and stable for the freeways, going to the coast or Vegas. Is the bigger 1200 more stable on the freeway, or Motorway as you say, like blast of winds from big trucks and potholes. Thanks for posting the video 👍
Hi Mark, thanks for watching. If your cruising long distances on the freeways then the 1200 would be my personal choice. The ergonomics on the 1200 are better giving a more relaxed and comfortable ride, better weather protection and an electric screen to allow more air if needed. Shaft driven so no maintenance. The weight you will get used to, ( just take your time when manually handling ) and once your riding, these big heavy bikes are quite agile on country roads and very stable on the freeways. Theres more room on the 1200 if you carry a pillion ? As for the heat from the engine, I try to keep moving and filter / lane split where possible ( not sure on your laws ). In an ideal world we'd all have huge garages with huge collections of various types of motorcycles but for me for now the Tiger 1200 fits all of my applications. Take both bikes out for a test / demo ride if possible ... Hope this helps 😁👍
Mark, the Explorer is my daily driver and I think it's very stable on the highway. People drive 75-80 mph on the freeway here ad I am comfortable with 25 knot crosswinds and no issues being passed by trucks. We've gone out two up with luggage and it's great. There is heat from the engine but it only bothers me when stopped and the temp is over 90 F. Try it!
@@markkulyas2418 i have the exact same question, i like the 1200 more and the power is greater. but light and nimble is good to. it hard to decide between 1200 or 800 xca.

Isn't it crazy how the power to weight ratios apply? The 800 is truly an exceptional all rounder 👍

Awesome video; had me chuckling! being 6'5" and 18 stone, I love my Explorer. Such a great machine for long distances.
Being 6'5" and 18 stone, your going to make the Explorer look small man 🤔😂. Total mile muncher, quite agree. Glad you enjoyed the video 👍

👍 Now there's an interesting thought that we didn't factor into the equation 🙄 Good luck with your hard choice ... they're both cracking machines 🤔
Great vid. Do yous live in Consett? I used to, spoiled for nice riding roads round there
