Ambit3 Peak Sapphire owner and user here. Works flawlessly, every single time. I want it to track tightly, record precisely, and transfer data without crashes. Excepting that crazy Movescount outage around Christmas last year, it's been perfect. Can't even count that against the watch. I came over from a T6c, so had zero investment in Ant+, thus Bluetooth Smart on the Ambit3 is a non-issue for me. edit: The strap on a peak sapphire is, at least to me, so much more comfortable. Peak has a plastic~y strap, whereas peak sapphire has silicone.
I had been researching both Suunto 2 & 3 and I reached the conclusion that for what I needed (tracking, speed and km data on the go..) the Polar RC3 GPS did fine for me, half the price! It is true that it takes a while to connect to the satellites, but I think that if it suits your needs you don't have to spend the double and get the Suunto! Just my opinion, of course! :)
Great video man, as always.! I hate to sound like a fangirl, but you've become my go-to reviewer on any running gear! Have you gotten your hands on Polar products? Would love to hear what you think of those :)
I'm using my ambit3 peak for about 5 months and I'm in love with it. It's really easy to use and set up. Everything is basically right there. The conectivity with my phone is super handy. I'd love to read my txt on the watch. Not really. I think it is annoying. I've running, mountain biking and swimming a lot and it feels great. I had a few crashes on my bike and the watch is like the g-shock. It is tough, good looking and smart. I just have one complain. Last week I did my first half marathon ever. At the end my watch was showing 23km. I think it got lost inside the tunnel that is about 2km in length.
After this watch hit I was able to get the Ambit2 Silver for half off. It was and is my entry into GPS watches and I'm loving it. Thanks for your review on both watches.
i have an ambit 3 too... great great great watch... the best on the market... the ambit 2 is also an amazing gear... i had it for 1 years... garmin is too unreliable, i sold my fenix2 and my 920XT too...
+gianky073 hi , i have 920xt but it fall shorts in count distance comparing with other devices. I'm disappointed. Ambit 3 have better GPS accuracy right? i will try to sell 920xt
I agree the Ambit 3 Peak is very nice watch, but I would like to warn potential buyers about the accompanying Suunto HRM strap. Do your own research, but many people including myself are experiencing failures (very wrong heart rate readings) after only a few weeks of use. I gave up and switched to using a Polar H7 HRM with the Suunto watch, which so far appears to work much better than the Suunto HRM ever did (much more instantaneous response to small effort changes, and accurate to the level I can determine by comparing with manual pulse measurements).
I got the Ambit2 a month ago and love it!! I'm glad that I didn't get the ambit3, and I'm glad the only real upgrade was Bluetooth since I'm not too concerned about that right now.
This is my favorite watch! Btw you dont need a pedometer anymore, suunto intergrate it directly into the watch. Take a look at your movescount graph. Awesome! Nice video!
Got the Ambit 3 Peak last week on a SMOKIN deal, and just picked up stages POWER. it handles cadence and power, and the ambit does the rest. Goodbye Garmin and your sub par devices. but Suunto does need to add live tracking via the app. Great review!
I got the Ambit3 sport 2 months ago and although its probably WAY more than I need (I run about 25mpw, but my company paid for it for health and wellness) I love this watch. I had exclusively just used my phone to track and quickly learned that my runs were actually cut short alot of the time due to shoddy tracking on the app/
I get the same feel of quality and trust in my Suunto Ambit2 as I get in my iPhone. Yes you might not get the same variety in style and in finess as you perhaps get with other watches and with android smartphones but, you know what you get when it comes to reliability and functionality with these two choices. Not sure anyone else agrees with this comparison but that's just how I feel about my technological gadgets.
The main problem is when you use your phone, you limit your ability to go long due to battery loss. Also, if you want to go light & tight - not always with an iphone - you might have an issue. But for tracking, as long as your app is reliable, it can be a decent choice.
English isn't my mother tongue so I knew there could be some misunderstanding. I didn't mean that I like to use my iPhone for running, I just compared my two probably most used electronic devices. I feel that my Suunto meets my standards on GPS-watches as my iPhone meets my standards on smartphones :)
***** I've been wearing an iPhone 3 in a Nathan Sonic armband remade to be a wristband; I have a REAL Smartwatch! Using map my run because that's all I could find for the old OS, and it works great. I'm only doing this to see if I like having data available, and as a stalling tactic waiting for the "right" running watch to come along. With the screen off, my very old phone has more than enough battery for 3 hour runs. Personally, in a running watch, I'd like a big display so I could easily read stats on the run, 12 hours battery life, connectivity to running software, built in HRM like the TomTom cardio, NO MONTHLY OR OPTIONAL FEES.
Love the Ambit3. I don't mind the loss of ANT+ because Bluetooth is faster, better and allows a device to be built that will store information (hence the ability to have HRM for swimming). My only complaint is a lack of free diving capability in the watch. Ultimately, I would like to see a watch that covers the full spectrum from sports features to free diving to SCUBA. Thanks for the review.
Ambit 3 sport user for about 4 years and the only complaint has been the quality of the strap. The same strap as the peak. Only lasts around 12 months. I am now on my 3rd strap at around $100 a strap another 2 straps and I will have paid out what it cost for the watch.
Interesting review. I would like to add that Suunto should also provide a warning when the battery of your heart rate belt is almost empty. My Suunto T3C does this, but my Ambit2 doesn't and I guess the Ambit3 also doesn't warn you.
thumbs up for: Bluetooth & Ant+ (this is a MUST, and one of the biggest reasons I don't just buy this watch without thinking about) Vibrating alert!! Option of seting more them 3 fields. About the screen, I don't like the fenix too much because of the colorfull. It seems a bit strange and it's also big. And Optical sensors aren't so confy as chest sensors, so while they don't have a reliable optical sensor, I would like to have the option of using chest sensors Just telling another point of view. Thank you for the video by the way.
Another great review, thank you Ethan. I am in the market for a new watch BUT will have to wait and see your review of the Garmin Fenix 3 before I shell out my cash for the right watch. Cheers
Nice review, thnx. Just ordered it btw. Not sure some of the criticism can be addressed without compromising the very reason I'v chosen it over competition. For example a color display would probably diminish battery life and getting rid of the bump GPS accuracy, and those are basically the main selling points for me as I intend to use it for hiking. Agree with vibration though, and having a standard charging cable (USB-C) would be nice.
Ethan, just curious, which watch did you use for your 100 miler? I am currently looking for a watch that will definitely last 36 hours (upcoming cutoff time for a race). Please advise.
Great review Ethan! I am torn between the ambit2 & 3. Could you tell me from your experiences using both models if you feel the ambit3 is way more accurate for GPS than the 2? I like the price and feature set of the 2, but i need a GPS that is accurate and can measure well -- even on a wooded trail.
I've used the original Ambit, Ambit2 and Ambit3. The battery life is better on the Ambit3 (vs. Ambit2). The HR transmitter is smaller on the Ambit3 (vs. Ambit2) since Suunto switched from ANT+ to Bluetooth connectivity. Another advantage being that you can connect your Ambit3 with an iOS device (Android coming soon). For the best accuracy I'd recommend an Ambit with the barometric pressure sensor (original Ambit or Ambit Peak). The location accuracy suffers with Ambit's that have GPS only - especially in steep terrain with heavy overhead tree cover.
Thanks for the review. For a first time buyer, would you recommend the Ambit 3? It is expensive but if I'm paying for something that is going to last, I'll make the sacrifice.
I bought the Garmin fenix 3 over the Suunto Ambit 3 for a few reasons. Main ones are: 1) you can't change the data screens on the Ambit 3 from the watch itself. You need to do it while connected to a computer. That's pretty crappy. 2) I have too many Ant+ sensors to quit cold turkey and get on the Bluetooth wagon. Were the Ambit 3 both ant+ and Bluetooth compatible I may have been a little more compelled, but even then I couldn't have looked past not being able to change my data fields from the watch itself. 3) the Ambit 3 has no vibration alert capability. My old Garmin forerunner 310xt had it. Come on Suunto.
Great review!..... Sorry only got the ambit 2 s hr .... just love its reliability.... never ever, ever let me down (used and abused since 2013 lol).... thought about getting the ambit 3 but really no need....may be when i finally destroy the 2!! though i think that will be some time yet.... Cheers Chris.
You said the Sapphire glass is more rugged, but I'd swear the Suunto rep at a demo yesterday said the Sapphire is actually more clear but not as rugged as the regular. Hmmm.
So you can receive texts & call alerts on the watch but you NEED the cell phone with you, regardless. This seems like extraneous duplicity, Suunto should incorporate other functions by skipping this...like incorporating BlueTooth & ANT+ in the watch. I had high hope for this watch at this price range.
Would you mind letting me know how you would rate this against the Garmin Fenix 3? I am new to these watches but want one for hiking and swimming and cycling, not really running although who knows! I have a Suunto D6 dive watch and it is a fine instrument, I have read some Garmin gadgets and they are OK, I like the Fenix feature set and especially he display, but am reading some horror stories about the GPS accuracy. Any tips on which is best? Thanks.
Hey @TheGingerRunner I have the Ambit2 black and love it. Do you know if the Ambit3 bands will fit the Ambit2? The Ambit3 bands seem to feel a lot softer than the Ambit2 which is about the only thing I'd change with my 2. This if off topic but I'd like to know what maintenance you do to keep your body in shape and injury free...eg stretching routine, cross training.......would love to see a review of what ever your doing to keep your body working all year round.
Dear Ginger runner, I'm pretty much convinced that this will be my watch to go for. I got just one question where I cannot seem to get any answer to. Do you know how much memory capacity the watch has? I plan to do longer hikes 2 - 4 weeks. With GPS set at every minute to safe power & memory. But when is the memory of the watch full so that you need to download to a PC or iPAd. Do you have any idea? Looking forward to you answer. Cheers Martin
Hi Ethan! Great review! Would you say this is still the best running watch for its price? I had a forerunner10 and want to upgrade but don't want to pay maximum price. The peak comes in around the same price as a Garmin 620/230. I'm going to be doing half marathons and some swimming. Thanks!
Have you had a chance to check out the Fenix 3 since this video? I'm looking for an upgrade and I'd be curious to have your opinion on the Fenix 3 if you've spent some time with it.
Hello, can anybody explain to me, what is the difference between Suunto ambit3 peak 2012 model or 2013 or 2016 or 2019? Or its all the same? What is the difference between Suunto ambit3 peak and ambit3 peak HR? Sorry Im new and Im looking for a good watch, and I fell in love with this watch. I want to buy a 2016 model for 90€. Is it worth? What do I need to be careful about when Im buying this used watches? Thank you for any answer :) Erik
Does it have a graphical heart rate possibility to see on display; in terms of seeing how the heart rate behave during the session? Interested to see the curve, not just current HR. Thank you in advance for your answer.
Quick question, if you still using or know about this watch. My Ambit3 Peak, I haven't used it for 3 months++. Now, I'm using it again. But, new problem come. 1. The map got wrong. Because some route crossing. What's should I do? 2. I ran with 2 watch. Spartan show the right kilometer. But this Ambit3 less kilometers. Gap around 450m - 500m. Can you give advice? Thank you.
I realy do t see that big of an update for me to want to upgrade to an ambit3 from my ambit2 sapphire ... Kinda seems like a wast of money at this point ... And have to buy all new comparable monitors ... Dumb... Looks like this is a way for sunnto to generate more income then loyalty to the customers .... I agree there should be a mint LCD screen on the next one were you could see a topicgaphical map with the dot of you on it that would be cool then pumping out a 12 diget grid ... Any ways thanks for the vid
Hey, I have a question and I thought you could help me. I have a Suunto Ambit3 Peak and I ran 10KM, 5 there and back, so the altitude profile should be symmetrical but it´s far from this. On the other hand, the route is very detailed, it even shows perfectly well that I went there on one side of the street and back on the other. ¿What happened, any idea? Thanks in advance. Best!
I have two questions: 1) Can i just put GPS target location number and this watch could show me the map how to reach that position showing track? 2) Is Vertical better for this watch? I am climber/mountainer, need GPS/barometr/tracking/temperature information etc
Need to order in 3 days my first (and hopefully last) top sportwatch, would you all please mind to suggest me between. - Fenix 3 hrm - Suunto ambit 3 peak hrm My usage: everyday watch, sport tracking: run( not a pro), swim outdoor and indoor, road and mtb cycling, crossfit and gym weights routines( for theese i'd like the best accuracy for calories and hrm). Got an android phone and i'd love to forget about pc connection if possibile. Thanks
Hi buddy. I'm planning to buy a used suunto ambit 3. On the other hand, when I look at prices there are at least 100 dollars in between with peak 2 models. And I really don't care about smart phone notifications. Do you think that is there something worth to that much? Im waiting for your advice
Hey , I'm interested in buying an Ambit 3 peak and I have some questions. Currently I'm using runtastic app for all my activities. Can I export the activity to runtastic? Is movescount comparable with runtastic?
the very last part of your description says "This product was provided by . All opinions are my own." provided by whom? is this a paid ad or did you buy all of this stuff with your own money and are giving your own genuine opinion, without any sponsorship?
Hello, im going to the military and need a good watch that are compatible for that. (Water, to stand to take a beat when im outside etc, and watch the time hehe). Is this a god clock for this? Or can you recommend some other watches exs. Polar m400?
Another great review mate. It'll be interesting when Fenix 3 hits. Garmin have seemed ahead of the game in terms of a really polished (read: pretty, colourful, sweet interface, Garmin connect) for a while and the 620 was a game changer. Incorporating the 620 into the new Fenix will be a beast of a watch, but the chief concern will be battery life. But this watch looks like sweet reliable upgrade. Im hesitant to change, being a Garmin junkie for so long, but it sure does look pretty awesome.
I have the Suunto ambit 3 sport which gives a different reading than the strava app on my phone.. They can be be way out in distance ran and speed per mile.. which one is right..!! I don't know
hey ginger runner Could you give your tip to stuck ambit sport strap on ambit 3 peak please i endorse responsibility if i broke it. Don't worry. Thanks
+That Canon Guy The Elementum line is not really comparable to the Ambit line. Ambit = GPS tracking. Elementum Terra = altitude, barometer, compass and more dressy for casual wear.
Be careful. some of ambit3 cannot produce any sound: - No buttons sound - No lap notification - No alarm sound - nothing if you bought such a delight on ebay or craigslist, like me, you screwed. there are number of people who complained about it. Hope suunto support will help...
I was a Garmin user for 4 years. But the Fenix2 kinda spoilt it for me and I eventually jumped to the Ambit3. Haven't looked back since!
Are you back to garmin?
Ambit3 Peak Sapphire owner and user here. Works flawlessly, every single time. I want it to track tightly, record precisely, and transfer data without crashes. Excepting that crazy Movescount outage around Christmas last year, it's been perfect. Can't even count that against the watch.

Just bought the Ambit 2 and absolutely love it! I didn't see the need to spend the extra money for the Ambit 3-- great review like always.

Still rocking the ambit 2 (black), I've been wearing and using it daily! I bought it based on your review last year and I LOVE IT. Thanks Ethan

Totally agree with everything you mentioned about the Suunto Ambit3, especially the missing vibration feature. Great review, Ethan!
i have an ambit 3 too... great great great watch... the best on the market...

Btw you dont need a pedometer anymore, suunto intergrate it directly into the watch.
Take a look at your movescount graph.
Awesome!
Nice video!
Nice review, your one on the ambit 2 made me buy one and it has served me very well. Still works perfectly, feel no need to upgrade.
Got the Ambit 3 Peak last week on a SMOKIN deal, and just picked up stages POWER. it handles cadence and power, and the ambit does the rest. Goodbye Garmin and your sub par devices. but Suunto does need to add live tracking via the app. Great review!

Holy moly, an oldie, but what a great review. Subbing...
NIce review, you hit on a lot pros & cons that I have with the Ambit3. Do you plan on reviewing the Fenix 3?

Hi Ethan! Great review!
Would you say this is still the best running watch for its price? I had a forerunner10 and want to upgrade but don't want to pay maximum price. The peak comes in around the same price as a Garmin 620/230. I'm going to be doing half marathons and some swimming.
Thanks!
Hey Ginger, would you still recommend Peak in 2017?
im buying it in 2018 since the price wayyyy down now.
Totally new to GPS watches. This was very helfpul. Thanks
informative review, Ethan, thanks.
I got this watch for 100€ and it is the Peak Sapphire model. I think it's worth it
Have you had a chance to check out the Fenix 3 since this video? I'm looking for an upgrade and I'd be curious to have your opinion on the Fenix 3 if you've spent some time with it.
Love your channel!! and The polar v800 is an epic watch! are you planning to review the v800 any time soon?
Ethan. Suunto Spartan Ultra is a TRUE replacement for the Ambit series? Pls comment. Cheers.
Hi there, have you tested the watch in a very cold enviroment? In winter on the mountains. If so, what's your opinion?
Hello, can anybody explain to me, what is the difference between Suunto ambit3 peak 2012 model or 2013 or 2016 or 2019? Or its all the same?

Sorry Im new and Im looking for a good watch, and I fell in love with this watch. I want to buy a 2016 model for 90€. Is it worth? What do I need to be careful about when Im buying this used watches?
Thank you for any answer :)
Erik
Review on the Garmin Fenix 3? Or vs against the Suunto Ambit 3?
I'll have to look into the ambit 2 or 3 a bit more. My Polar M400 has been kinda a pain in the butt and now it won't even connect/charge via USB.
Does it have a graphical heart rate possibility to see on display; in terms of seeing how the heart rate behave during the session? Interested to see the curve, not just current HR. Thank you in advance for your answer.
I plan on using it for open water swimming, which one you think is better, this or Polar V800?
Thanks Bro, am buying one now after your review
Hey, I have a question and I thought you could help me. I have a Suunto Ambit3 Peak and I ran 10KM, 5 there and back, so the altitude profile should be symmetrical but it´s far from this. On the other hand, the route is very detailed, it even shows perfectly well that I went there on one side of the street and back on the other. ¿What happened, any idea? Thanks in advance. Best!
Ethan... it's about time to make similar review of Spartan Wrist HR you use for some time now. Please ;)
I have two questions: 1) Can i just put GPS target location number and this watch could show me the map how to reach that position showing track? 2) Is Vertical better for this watch? I am climber/mountainer, need GPS/barometr/tracking/temperature information etc
Damn this watch is expensive in Asia. Can't wait for the new Salomon pack review!
The price here in Singapore is excessive...
When will you review the garmin fenix 3?
Could you review the Fenix3 please. I am not sure which watch should I buy, the fenix 3 or the ambit 3.
Need to order in 3 days my first (and hopefully last) top sportwatch, would you all please mind to suggest me between.
- Fenix 3 hrm
- Suunto ambit 3 peak hrm
My usage: everyday watch,
sport tracking: run( not a pro), swim outdoor and indoor, road and mtb cycling, crossfit and gym weights routines( for theese i'd like the best accuracy for calories and hrm).
Does the Ambit3 Peak have a wrist hr monitor built into the watch along with the chest strap?
There will be a review from garmin fenix 3? I thinking about buying the fenix 3 HR. Seems a to be a nice watch.
@TheGingerRunner Fenix 3 vs Ambit3 Peak, which one is better GPS watch ?
In Trekking mode is it possible to get location in Grid Reference? I can only seem to get a GPS co-ordinate.
A bit hopeless question, but is it possible to connect ambit3's strap to ambit2?
Hey , I'm interested in buying an Ambit 3 peak and I have some questions. Currently I'm using runtastic app for all my activities. Can I export the activity to runtastic? Is movescount comparable with runtastic?
Thanks Man! Super thorough!
Does this watch have a wrist HR monitor?? Or do I have to buy the heart rate belt?
Does the heart rate feature require the chest strap or does it also work from the wrist sensor?
Shauna Finley Chest strap
I got the ambit 3 peak and there is no step counter on this model. I have not done a firmware update on this. Anyone noticed this?
the very last part of your description says "This product was provided by . All opinions are my own."
provided by whom? is this a paid ad or did you buy all of this stuff with your own money and are giving your own genuine opinion, without any sponsorship?
Hello, im going to the military and need a good watch that are compatible for that. (Water, to stand to take a beat when im outside etc, and watch the time hehe). Is this a god clock for this? Or can you recommend some other watches exs. Polar m400?
does it work with free flight? paragliders, hang gliders?? thanks
Hi! the blue strap is silicone or elastomer? Thanks!
I still wear ambit3 peak
Another great review mate. It'll be interesting when Fenix 3 hits. Garmin have seemed ahead of the game in terms of a really polished (read: pretty, colourful, sweet interface, Garmin connect) for a while and the 620 was a game changer. Incorporating the 620 into the new Fenix will be a beast of a watch, but the chief concern will be battery life. But this watch looks like sweet reliable upgrade. Im hesitant to change, being a Garmin junkie for so long, but it sure does look pretty awesome.
This watch is awsome period, but a little bit hard to learn all configurations … kinda Linux(Suunto) x windows ( garmin)
Why no dive depth reader??
I have the Suunto ambit 3 sport which gives a different reading than the strava app on my phone.. They can be be way out in distance ran and speed per mile.. which one is right..!! I don't know
Strava auto-corrects everything for the most part, so trust the ambit.
hey ginger runner
Could you give your tip to stuck ambit sport strap on ambit 3 peak please
i endorse responsibility if i broke it. Don't worry.
Thanks
Oh you beauty!! I'm picking mine up tomorrow am from west Van salomon :0)))
this is a good review for a decision for me thank you very much
what about the GARMIN FORERUNNER 620???
Anyone have a good alitmeter / compass recomendation for a 20,000 mile trip?
have you try Suunto Elementum Terra Stealth ????? I'm interested that watch !!!!!!
+That Canon Guy The Elementum line is not really comparable to the Ambit line. Ambit = GPS tracking. Elementum Terra = altitude, barometer, compass and more dressy for casual wear.
Be careful. some of ambit3 cannot produce any sound:
- No buttons sound
- No lap notification
- No alarm sound
- nothing
if you bought such a delight on ebay or craigslist, like me, you screwed.
there are number of people who complained about it. Hope suunto support will help...
nice review.....
Has anyone found a way if scrolling passed the first 40 characters of a text message?
Can this make/receive calls?
why is there no footpod for this watch? very weird!
