  • Should vegans abandon their diet because they can't possibly cause zero animal deaths? From his PlayGround interview, it appears that renowned' Argentine naturalist Claudio Bertonatti thinks they should.

      Mavka1997 but we use their bodies for food, it's not particularly to torture them. we don't kill animals just to kill them, we kill them for food.
      just like some plants kill insects and animals to use their bodies for sustenance in order to survive.
      now in 9/11 that happened to retaliate, strike fear into the citizens of the U.S, and just to kill and hurt.
      multiple planes being hijacked and then crashed into two buildings to kill thousands just to make us fear them and torture citizens is not natural by any means.

Also the CO2 emitted from the fire is helping plants to grow, thus helping against world hunger. (Being sarcastic - of course ;-) - But sadly, the CO2 argument is actually and seriously used by a quite popular political party here in Germany in their program to deny man-made climate change.)

    Arguing with anti-vegan "arguments" is like arguing with little children - you have to explain obvious and simple things. I mean eating crops is obviously more efficient than feeding crops to animals and then eating animals - it is just common sense - you don't need any statistics or some deep knowledge on the subject - it is just pure logic and common sense, yet you have to explain it.

    • @rawfoodphilosophy7061

      Ya, mic the vegan crushed him! However, on a related topic, eating plants (although causing the least amount of death) still causes death of animals. How do vegans promote eating a high calorie diet? How are fat vegans ethicial? Wouldn't a calorie restricted 100% plant diet be the most ethical, while also extending a persons life by 10-20 years?

    • @adamaj74
      @adamaj74 7 лет назад +26

      "How do vegans promote eating a high calorie diet?" I don't know any vegans that promote eating more calories than you need. I don't eat any more calories than I did when I wasn't vegan, either. More carbs, but not more calories. But even if I did consume more calories, as long as I'm not gaining weight, it would be because that's what my body needed.
      "How are fat vegans ethical?" Rude choice of words and statement in general. Some people have issues with weight and have trouble maintaining a healthy bmi due to a lot of factors - some of which are out of their direct control - it has nothing to do with ethics.
      "Wouldn't a calorie restricted 100% plant diet be the most ethical, while also extending a persons life by 10-20 years?" What is your evidence that calorie restricting extends life by 20 years? And how would one do this while living a healthy, active life? You can't consume less calories than you need for an extended period of time without losing weight and/or being less active, and everyone can't just sit around in an attempt to reduce their caloric needs. I like to cycle for an hour a day and that requires a certain amount of calories. Anything less than what I need will cause me to lose weight/muscle mass and negatively impact my performance and health. Not exercising and being sedentary so I'll consume less calories isn't an option either as that isn't healthy.
      It's about doing the best you can without being obligated to hurt and deprive yourself of life, calories, activity, etc. Even if you restrict calories and become sedentary so you don't require as many calories, etc., you're still not perfect or ethical, and animals, life, will still die because of your existence. Someone can always point out a way for you to be better, more ethical, etc. But at what point do you stop depriving yourself? You could continue to the point of killing yourself and you still wouldn't be perfect. To me, common sense says to do the best you can while not hurting yourself. I draw the line at hurting myself, my physical and mental health and well-being. Overall, my choice to become vegan has made a positive impact on my life, animal lives, and the environment. I'll take it.

    • @rawfoodphilosophy7061
      @rawfoodphilosophy7061 7 лет назад +1

      Look up calorie restriction, every single study done on mammals has extended their lives dramatically, some by a third, others by as much as 50%.
      I completely understand about doing the best you can and think vegans are the epitome of being an ethical person when it comes to animals. I'm just throwing out some observations while also trying to take the smugness and self righteousness out of some of the crazier vegans.
      I'm glad you enjoy cycling 1 hour a day. What do you think of the raw till 4 cult, with some cycling 4-5 hours a day, while consuming upwards of 4000 calories a day? Are they ethical? They are making a choice to kill double the amount of animals than that of a person eating 2000 calories.

    • @adamaj74
      @adamaj74 7 лет назад +11

      I'm not a part of rt4. And I would agree that cycling several hours more than you need to just for the sake of cycling does pose some questions. Is doing something you don't need to do, to an excessive level, unethical and anti-vegan when it means you must compensate for said activity by consuming more food, which in turn means more animal deaths/suffering? But maybe some people do need to cycle that much. Maybe it's their only form of transportation, and riding a bike everywhere you go would be a better option (for your health, the animals, the environment, etc.) than driving. So even though you may consume more food and contribute to slightly more animal suffering, overall that is still better than the negative effects of driving a car. It depends I guess. Some people just like to cycle, but is that worse than any other arbitrary hobby that someone else may have? I don't know. Is sitting in front of my computer or TV worse than riding a bike for the same amount of time, as far as the animals/environment go? I don't know. Just about any activity results in the deaths of animals or the destruction of the environment, etc. Using a computer, electricity, etc. requires energy and manufacturing facilities, etc., all of which contribute negatively to the environment and cause animal/wildlife deaths. You could just sit around, but being sedentary causes health problems that result in medical treatment that uses huge amounts of resources that cause environmental destruction and animal suffering, etc. There are an almost infinite number of variables and it's just about impossible to keep track of them all or to know exactly what their impact is. Maybe those people you mentioned that consume 4000 calories instead of 2000 would do something even worse if they didn't cycle. And I don't mean that in a bad way as far as a character judgement, etc., just that maybe cycling isn't as bad as driving around sight-seeing or going to an amusement park or watching RUclips videos, or whatever else they would be doing instead of cycling. Everything uses resources. Unless you're just sitting outside in silence you're more than likely doing something that contributes to the destruction of the environment and animal suffering. You're screwed no matter what you do. That's why I said to do the best you can with what you have in the situation you find yourself in.

    • @rawfoodphilosophy7061
      @rawfoodphilosophy7061 7 лет назад +1

      adamaj agreed! There is no need to point the finger at any of those things you mentioned, including people who consume more calories. I'm focused on the big things such as factory farming and cutting it out completely. Plus, I'm also trying to minimize the crazy vegans from taking over the movement. We need some more intelligent, rational and emotionally stable people in the movement.

    No vegans are claiming to be perfect, and no vegans are claiming that their very existence is not harmful to this planet (or at least any vegans that are, are deluded). All we're doing is offering a PRACTICAL solution for a very serious issue that is currently happening: the largest act of systematic violence in history, and its resulting havoc on the planet, and indeed on other humans.
    I don't have a practical solution to your argument about squirrel habitat being destroyed for my home. I don't have a practical solution to your argument that pieces of metal in the electronic devices I own were mined by slave children. And I don't have a practical solution to your argument that I pollute the air by using modern transport.
    But I DO have a practical solution for the lambs being slammed to death on concrete because they're not fit to produce wool. I DO have a practical solution for the dairy cows whose existence revolves around having their reproductive system violated and their babies snatched from them and stabbed to death. I DO have a practical solution for the ongoing deforestation of the Amazon, the lungs of the earth, in order to grow cattle feed. And I DO have a practical solution for the male chicks who are being shredded alive or suffocated to death in the egg industry. I've told you about it a thousand times before, and it's called VEGANISM.
    So I will continue to promote this practical solution to these issues, while awaiting your practical solutions to the issues of squirrel habitat being destroyed to build homes; slave children mining parts in our electronic devices; and pollutants being pumped into the air from using modern transport.
    And when you've got them, I will gladly jump on-board. Until then though, I think it's about time that you jump on-board with the practical solution I've offered to the issues I've raised.
    "Veganism isn't the best we can do, it's the least we can do."

    Meat is a great part of Argentinian, Uruguayan and Chilean culture, so they tend to get very defensive whenever the topic is on the table. Meat is seen as the only way to bond with people. Families meet on the weekend for barbecues, our national holidays are centered around meat and rodeo, New Year's eve is more meat and alcohol.
    Chile has seen a huge increase in vegetarian and vegan restaurants, most supermarket carry meat alternatives and non-dairy products, activists are on the street every weekend spreading the word and at the same time, you see a huge increase in anti-vegan articles. From nutrient deficiency to how 'we're naïve' for thinking we're might change something, there's always someone trying to debunk the vegan diet. From my point of view, it's because it is working, and more people are transitioning so the industry feels threatened and invests more heavily in publicity campaigns.
    I guess we're slowly progressing, even when vegetarians and vegans are still a very small part of the population.

      El año pasado viví unos meses en Uruguay y era lo mismo. Ni siquiera era necesario una celebración o un fin de semana, parrilladas cada dos días.
      A mí toda esta publicidad me hace pensar que de verdad tienen que estar empezando a darse cuenta de que el movimiento para dejar la carne está agarrando vuelo. Si hasta la Crianza está sacando productos veganos para subirse al tren. Y a pesar de que la gente hace más asados, también hay gente que se está educando y disminuye su consumo de carne (al menos de carnes rojas) hay que tener paciencia no más

      Amy Lorenzo yeah, every culture is relies heavily on food and meat is usually seeing as part of it. But, my friend, you have not seen meat-centered culture until you've lived/visited in one of the countries I named. Eating animals is something taken for granted in these countries. So much so, that one of the main economic activities in all of them is animal agriculture. Their meat exports are very important in the region, especially Uruguayan meat which is mainly grass-fed beef.
      In Chile and Argentina, the publicity campaigns for eggs, meat and dairy move billions of dollars. It's not only 'buy this brand' kind of thing. Public health money is destined to brainwash people with 'the health benefits of eating eggs' or 'milk does a body good.' Our governmental entities equivalent to the USDA have a majority of their sits occupied by the meat industry.
      Yes, every culture/country has a celebration centered around meat, but I'm not sure so many countries can get as ridiculous as this. It's actually quite pathetic.

    I'm annoyed that so many vegans (here on RUclips at least) think that just because they're vegan that's good enough and that they don't have to do anything else to try and improve their ecological impact - such as when they're confronted with the unsustainability of palm oil or almonds and they get ultra defensive and dismissive. Veganism is one of the easiest steps to make, but it's not the be all end all and we shouldn't let the vegan community become a, echo chamber community of just patting each other on the back and being lulled into a false state of contentment.

    • @tanisham2183

      I agree that we shouldn't rest on our laurels just because we're vegans. I see veganism not as an end in itself but as a means to an end, and this is a point that I emphasize when speaking to others on the subject. We should hold each other accountable in the vegan community as much as we do with meat eaters.

    • @unapalomacualquiera

      You are right, but don't assume every vegan eats palm oil or almonds, and not everybody is vegan because of sustainability. But like you said, we all can do better, starting for example, by stop buying stuff that ships from other continent, even from another country.

    Bertonatti's article is part of the growing and alarming "grasslands restoration through animal agriculture" movement that has started to take off in Argentina and which has a great deal of money behind it. The studies on the ecological impact of animal management to restore grasslands/reduce emissions has increased in just the half year since I first started to look into it, and the results tend toward favorability. Of course, they exclude from analysis lots of data, just as Bertonatti does. I had no idea it would become this titanic a counter-argument to veganism. The industries are truly frightened of what vegan food science is coming up with, and of the growing incidence of veganism worldwide. Thanks for posting this, Mic.

But that is changing, I became vegan recently and so have a few of my friends, we are finding more and more vegan products in the market aisles, more vegan shops even in a small city like mine. 1. There is intentional death involved in veganism because there is knowledgeable death when mass crops are cut down
    2. Why does a cows life have more value than a moths life? We should ask ourselves here what value of life means to animals, and if this is the same across the board of animals
    3. Value of life for all animals relates more than anything to the level that we understand and experience life. Humans have an incomparable and vast expansion of consciousness that allows us to think deeply about these issues with compassion, humility and logic. Although value of life is not based on intelligence, we need to understand that our experiences appear to be much more sculpted and in depth than an animals experiences and therefore the suffering of slaughtering may be relative, perhaps even better (with good quality care and rearing) than a natural, slow and/or painful death of disease or sickness.
    4. Eating meat does NOT make the meat industry correct, good, ethical or ok. I would rather be vegan than be responsible for the bloodshed that the meat industry holds on their hands. The cheap animal products have allowed so much unesesary harm towards animals and we as humans consume too much meat as food, that is cause for alarming concern. The solution is to appreciate the little meat that we NEED in our diet for appropriate nutrition, become closer to nature and understand that we are all animals. We kill eachother, literally. Doesn't make it right, but it's simply life. Synergy in nature, as stupid as it may sound. We kill ants every time we step outside!
    5. This is the real truth. Over-population is the real issue!
    P.s. plants are alive

      Vegans are just too preachy, ive heard far too many claim that they want the world to become vegan with out any acknowledgment to the fact that if that happened all if not most domestic species would be forced into extinction by such an event. domestic animals have no natural habitat anymore so the responsible vegan world would by their own ideals "genocide" those species just like they claim the meat industry does. it is the peak of hypocrisy.

    Look at your phones and computers, your cars and your health products, look at your house. everything has animal products. Not everything can be reproduced synthetically to replace the use of bone, marrow, fat, and other essential ingredients to make the plastics, connectors, paints, and varnishes on everyday products. So regardless of what you eat, you are still paying someone to kill an animal and have its body parts used in our everyday products. Imagine the amount of carcasses that would be left over as a by product of the manufacturing process of general goods such as phones and televisions. in a way we meat eaters are cleaning up the left overs.
    And before you say we can replace all plastics with hemp based plastics, i assure you that it can not. Bone marrow and other fats from a cow or pig or fish are needed.

      'Plastic is derived from organic substances including crude oil, salt, cellulose, coal and natural gas. Crude oil, one of the main ingredients of plastic, is a complex compound that must be broken down into fractions (mixtures of compounds made up of carbon and hydrogen) in order to be used effectively.'
      I'd like to know where you're getting your sources from. There is no animal products in paint, plastic or computers. They would be deemed unsuitable for vegetarians if they were.

    Not all omnivores eat livestock, I don't, so I have less of an impact on deforestation and soy farming then vegans do :) I love how Mic only presents one highly bias point of view while completely disregarding the other side, makes picking his arguments to pieces so much easier. Not an objective analysis hence not really a valid argument.
    The greenhouse gas argument from cattle has been debunked so many times I almost hate to bring it up again, but rest assured that all educated people who actually know the carbon cycle know that you are spouting BS.

It has never been "debunked" in fact it is the most current science. Watching Penn and Teller's Bullshit or Fox news does not qualify you as "educated."

Also, I know a lot of people who do weight loss diets where they cut out all carbs and sugars and eat only meat (and then they binge out on candy from time to time, no surprise). Can you talk about the long (or short) term negative health effects of this diet? Thhhaaankkkssssss, love your channel.

    Sounds like he's just justifying a bad habit. It's not sound logic in his article--but it makes him feel better about eating meat.
    I take the article as a human study, more than anything. It is a good example of the process people undertake to support their positions when they know they are in the wrong. It almost always becomes an appeal to emotion. It makes him "feel" like he's not hurting as many animals, it no longer matters if that's fact, it's about how it is sitting with him.

    I have commented on a post on vegan aminos to someone saying the same thing about veganism being pointless. However she was basing her argument on an article about thailand monkeys enslaved to pick coconuts, and she included organic foods and palm oil. Her point was that we [vegans] should not critic others' diets when ours involves animal cruelty and death also; she was talking about a post that vegetarians should be vegan or whatever. And that being vegetarian or reducing meat consumption was just as good as being vegan. First, I do agree that any step away from the use of animal products is a good one. I love ro see the lightbulb go off, even if it is for something small My hope is that will trigger a path towars veganism, or at least more reduction in exploitation of animals.
    My point to her was...why are vegans, a very small population, being blamed for things that meat eaters and vegetarians, a much larger population, eating also...along with the animal products. What are your thoughts on this similar subject?

    • @bonchidude
      @bonchidude 6 лет назад +1

      Purple, I do not buy coconuts or such from Asia. They do not do this in South America as far as I know and we must make those of the coconut industry that enslave sentient beings to stop or boycott them. As far as palm oil I do not buy it at all or in any products. One time this month I was forced to consume a milk ingredient but when I found out I had the bank pull the money and investigate this. If I get my money back, great. if not then I tried and made a MUCH wider point. To say it is not OK to deceive or try to slide something under my awareness. Label if the product is VEGAN or NOT in the FRONT of the package, not tiny letters on the rear of the package.

    • @ShadowyKatz

      Honestly, I think it's more for vegans that are super self-righteous, and think that they are better than other people. So non-vegan/vegetarians get angry about it, and get self-righteous back. No one should get "holier than thou" about it, because neither lifestyles are cruelty free, they just concentrate their cruelty in different places.

    • @bonchidude

      Olivia, so what would you save to those who wanted to enslave others back 150 plus years ago? You would not say, oh it is their choice to oppress others. This is the fight we have today. Sentient Being rights is the issue today as slavery was back 150 plus years ago. You cannot say, oh it is their choice to oppress, mistreat and murder sentient beings because they feel like it.

  • @eatfoodnotanimals861

    It must be recognised that carnists by far are not very intellgent people. The food itself makes one less intellegent. After eating human foods for a while one can recover, but while eating animal food there is only so much that a human mind is able to achieve. Whatever can be achieved while eating animal food is much less than can be achieved while eating human food. This means the more intellgent carnists would be geniuses if they were not suppressing thier abilities by eating like lower animals.
    I am sure most of you have noticed how your mental abilities increased when you made the change to real human food, especially if one eats whole foods. If one eats like an animal, one can only achieve what is possible by eating components that are used to construct a carnistic animal. Ironically carnists talk about lions often, and they are unable to achieve mental abilities above that of lions because they are eating like one. We must consume components nessasery to build a human brain and body if we wish to obtain the full human potential.

      Plants are not sentient. They don't feel suffering, anxiety, worry or joy. They are not conscious or self-aware, and they don't cling to life in the way humans and other animals do. The point of veganism is to minimize suffering and respect an animals right to keep its life (which it values very highly). Therefore, 'killing' and eating plants and not animals is the best way to minimize suffering at both an individual and global level.

    How does eating meat help wild animals?
    Here in Australia, one of several answers would be that farmers generally control feral animals, some of those feral animals are a key threatening process to native species. Without farmers on the land there’d be no feral animal control.
