He's been retconned to not be a mutant, apparently he wanted to be a mutant so badly that his reality warping powers made it seem like he had the X-gene. Although I suppose it would be super easy for the writers to say at any time "Nah, he was always a mutant, Xavier just lied to his face because he didn't think he would agree with the stuff they got on with on the Council."

Those two pages of the Symbiote hypnotizing Franklin have been in my head for decades since I first read them in that comic. The artwork was always there but never the writing, and I could never remember if it was a single thing, if it was resolved in a series I didn't read at the time, or was just simply forgotten about. Thanks for reminding me after all these years. I can finally live in peace.

His run may have been the best of the FF. And John Byrne with the possible exception of Jack Kirby and Jim Starlin was one if not the best at writing cosmic themed stories and he was an amazing artist. He understood Galactus like no other writer did imo.

DC comics take notes! This is how you connect dots that span decades and make it COHESIVE . Marvel did the same with infinity gauntlet which spans far more than the 6 issues of infinity gauntlet or the 2 issues of Thanos quest.

There was another issue of the Fantastic Four somewhat earlier that Franklin had immense power: In that issue, Franklin's powers were building up, to an "overload". He was unconscious, and the power kept building and building, until he threatened to destroy the Universe (or something). Reed, realizing the catastrophe that was about to happen, pulled out some kind of gun thingy he'd invented, and zapped Franklin with it. This "turned off" Franklin, but left him in what seemed to be a permanent catatonic state. Needless to say, Sue was Not Pleased. She t5ook Franklin's body, said to Reed, "Reed how could you? He was your son", and separated from Reed for a time (they reunited eventually).
Because one of the most powerful reality warpers, that can canonically kick the shiny metal asses of not one, not two, but several Celestials at once, just blasted him into itty bitty tiny weeny pieces, and he still came back. He's pretty much a cosmic entity with Deadpool's Undying factor.

Even after all these years, it sometimes still surprises me to be reminded how easy it is (because of how they generally construct his stories) to forget that Mephisto is fundamentally just another Abstract. On a somewhat smaller scale than, say, Oblivion or Entropy, but still an Abstract... 😮
Difficult to say, Franklin has made pocket dimensions and with the help of the Beyonders powers helped recreate the multiverse. WPOTC is omniversal able to create and destroy entire timelines at will. Personally I’d give it to WPOTC but that’s just my take

He should be the master of moral temptation, manipulation and lies. He should be able to, through lies, disguise what is evil as good. Such a being would never reveal himself. He would hide behind the scenes in order to pull the strings of “self destruction”. A veritable mole in the moral/rational will. How would he accomplish this? Through our ignorance. What we don’t know can not just kill us, it can make us do things against every fibre of moral judgment we believe in. This should be Mephisto’s power. What happened to Wanda in “..multiverse of madness” is true "evil genius”. For Mephisto to challenge Franklin directly would be idiotic. Now if he could get Franklin to kill his parents “by accident” or deception or lies then that would be more in keeping with his “power”. He would then be able to destroy Franklin from within, through guilt and despair. Now I realize that Mephisto might manipulate a situation in order to have a certain outcome. An outcome he can then use to his advantage. But any outcome that requires his revelation weakens his power. “Forewarned is forearmed” as they say. That is why “..multiverse of madness” was so brilliant. No one had any inkling of his involvement. Revealing Mephisto should be like revealing the devil worshippers in “Rosemary’s Baby”. It should be that astonishingly, shocking and deviant. A betrayal so completely devious as to outrage the soul. Machiavellian evil designed to entangle, corrupt and defile the innocent. Certainly Thanos, Kang and Dr. Doom are devious; but their deviousness is in service to the acquisition of personal power. Personal power as a means to accomplishing a private goal: a rational/volitional outcome. What is Mephisto’s …aim? His own or…someone else’s? How do you know your will is your own?

Mephisto will always exist in the comics but i bet the MCU will think of some bs way of killing him once he's introduced since the MCU loves killing off villains quick fast and in a hurry instead of utilizing them for later.
