- In today's video we look at a couple of Rise N' Grind 2023 sets, Lima vs Glutonny and Lima vs Miya. This evet was a Steve banned tournament and also had two Bayonetta players, Lima and Geist, making top 8 for this major.

Lima was such a joy to watch, and I would have never expected that before Rise 'n Grind. Dude was smiling non-stop, just having a good time and treated his opponents respectfully whether he won or lost. Huge props to Lima!
"If you ban Steve, the Smash 4 Bayos will come out." I am 💯 OK with that. Watching cutscene combos is more entertaining for me, then watching Steve dig and minecart, while his opponent attacks blocks and dies at 80%

I mean, I've played all these games back then, and then shit starts poppin up in my phone about some grown ass men sending death threats to a kid who plays Mr. Cubeman, I was like "tf is going on there?"
I look at all the shit Steve does and even played some games, and my first thoughts are "is that it? this is the toptier that caused this much vitriol? I've seen more toptiers that does cancer shit than this."
And I look further on the pmlg stuff that started all of this crap and I fukin laugh my ass off

Steve is tame asf for a top tier, try mk9 kenshi and sonya or mvc3 morrigan and vergil.

Definitely think the ban was too early. It’s not stupid to ban if the character ends up dominating the meta like bayo smash4, but the character was banned so quickly that we may never see an alternate reality where everyone plays steve
Bayo is either one of the best high tiers or one of the worst top tiers, similar to Terry imo. Her weaknesses technically exist but she has so many unique options that they don’t matter. Her landing lag is often a non issue since she can use her specials to retreat to ledge or witch time to cancel all lag and kill YOU for trying to punish her. Her kill power as you said is actually not bad, and even if she’s not killing you until 180%, she got most of that damage off of two combos. She’s tall and light but has one of the best disadvantage states in the game, so abusing that is not easy.

i actually hate fighting game and watch and sonic more than steve.
So you're not fully wrong about slide but if it's done from a certain area you can actually space it to do the slide kick and if you do it too close it has a chance to cross up but not as well as dash attack
99.99% of the people commenting here lose to Steve in online matches. They don't know why Steve must be banned or how he affects the game. In some cases I think people are over exagerating Steve. Yes, he is very strong and has a LOT of tools to deal with most if not all the roster. However, he has his weakneses and his weakneses is his own gameplay. If you pressure Steve he dies, if you outrange him he dies. If you know when to punish him he dies.
If Mutace has let the best Steve to farm and do whatever he wants and still beating him then it is possible for anyone. I like how people say how godlike busted Steve is but don't say anything when a Kazuya takes 2 of your stocks in 35 seconds. No, no, that's fine. The propaganda is strong.
Comparing Steve to Kazuya is crazy. Both has 0-deaths. But only one of them is the best grappler in the game while also being the best camper who also is one of the best brawlers. Imagine Kazuya but you can’t zone him out and have to approach him. That’s the difference between Kazuya and Steve.

Soooo in melee literally half of the people in top 64 are fox. And people are chilling there.
I know we want to prevent this game’s meta from losing people (like smash four) but I really don’t play against enough Steves to think this is a problem yet. He’s also got his bad matchups, but I say that as a ZSS main 🤓
Basically the reason people have this double standard for Melee Fox is that Melee Fox has flashy combos and is fun to watch. Whereas Steve feels like the same game every time: go to corner, build wall, mine, minecart or up-smash platform if someone gets close. Rinse and repeat till they get diamond, then they spam their broken tilts and aerials.
That being said, I don't think its Steve players' fault that Steve is unbalance as fuck and also boring to watch. Thats the fault of the developers.
Ya, people care about banning Steve because he is broken, easy and boring to watch. Easy relative to the rest of the top tiers. If Joker or fox were as common as Steve, people wouldn’t want them banned because they are fun player to player characters. Problem characters like Steve and GnW fundamentally break the game down to “can you deal with this move/setup” instead of “can you use your characters tools to beat your opponents habits and win”. Player to player characters are always more interesting to watch because people are what make smash fun and interesting. I think Steve is frustrating and boring because he is a set play character but also has the best boxing tools in the game and those tools are easy to use and have less risk than other boxing tools. For example, Fox nair is equally safe as Steve uptilt and both lead to insane rewards. The difference is that Steve just presses up and A and doesn’t have to commit to a jump so there is way less risk. So that means the reward of beating the Steve’s set play is to play against Steve’s tilts, minecart and anvil. The only person having fun during a Steve match is the Steve player(this is a generalization, I’m sure there are exceptions). I get what Steve is beatable, but the question is more about enjoyment of the viewers/players.
Theres also the problem of popularity. Most melee players play fox. Steve is not as popular. Fox melee does have better results in tournaments than Steve, but that mainly because fox is played more. So I wouldn’t compare steve to melee fox unless we have more people pushing the steve meta. But bans and backlash of steve is preventing that forward progression of the character optimal play and representation
melee players like fox, ultimate players hate steve. they're different characters in different games. equating the two is an oversimplification.

No, you're jumping ahead and rebutting A claim I never made, I'm assuming you thought I was taking a pro-ban position on Steve's legality as a competitive character. I made no such statement. To me it is very easy. Do not ban a character unless that one shows up consistently around 4 out of 8 times in Top 8s.

I feel like the ONLY reason the meta hasn’t become Steve centered is because of the overall balance of the game. The Top character isn’t so broken that they essentially force players to have to play as them if the really wanted to win. Due to that and the general dislike of the character causing many to not want to play as him, Steve’s representation isn’t quite as high when compared to Smash 4 Bayo or Brawl Meta Knight. That being said, Steve is still an insanely busted character when compared to the rest of the cast and all it’ll take is for the wrong thing to happen to sway players opinions and make them shift to Steve to make the competitive landscape nosedive.
I feel that Steve is a couple tiers above the BS other characters can pull off. Players dont play Steve because its boring to play and watch.

Playing vs Steve is like fighting against a disease with sentience and instead of it killing you quickly it makes sure to end you as slowly was possible while toying with you the whole time.

I think why would anyone put 1000s of hours into a lab-heavy character that sits in the corner all game only to win like pennies at a major. The game is already on the down trend so it makes especially no sense now when several other perfectly viable characters exist.

As a casual player and spectator, aggressive play style and cool animation/combos makes for a hype match. Steve builds actual walls, is rewarded for not approaching and is just not fun to play or watch.

Haven't watched the vid yet but by this point, it would be way too much of a mess to ban Steve. I was pro ban, but by this point so many people have already built their foundations with and against Steve. There are too many Steve mains, too many people who have already decided to just adapt, and too many people that no longer care about the discussion entirely. Banning him would just be a mistake, cause too much discourse, and ultimately be a headache.

Steve is your typical run-of-the-mill easy to pick up top tier, if you want actual cancer top tiers look at mvc2, mvc3, or mortal kombat 9. It makes Steve look weak in comparison.
Cap mvc3 has a variety of characters used and not super sure mk9 has a definitive best character but I get that 1 and I super agree about mvc2 magneto storm sentinel are crazy top ss tier
@@juanvasquez5700Kabal is the best character in mk9 he has no losing/even match-up he's a rushdown/counter-zoner/zoner all at the same time his rushdown was ridiculous he has plus frames for days, he's a zoner because his instant-air gas blast was spammy as hell, he can't be zoned out because he can trade hits with low hit buzz saw which was very plus on hit and Ex Nomad dash gives him armor and if you try to throw a projectile he can punish you into combo in midscreen away, and his mid hitting launcher has the random block advantage bug which means it can become plus 10 block randomly lmao
And then there's Kenshi the 2nd best character who 7-3's and 8-2's most of the cast and has a couple 9-1's as well
Kenshi is a zoner, he has the most fucked specials, he has a move called shoulder push which is a mid hitting projectile that reaches mid screen, it has pushback which means he gains distance from you for blocking it, it barely has whiff recovery which you can spam the hell out of it, its -1 at max range and it's still safe if you do it at point blank range because of the pushback, if you get hit by it, it sends you back to full screen, its hitbox is massive that you can anti-air with it,
and it's Ex version is even more fucked up, it goes twice as far now, it's plus 8 on block now that you can throw out another shoulder push, it's pushback is so massive it put you back almost full screen for BLOCKING, and it's a combo starter in the corner and this is just only just 1 special move I'm talking about.

@@PizzaSpinach Sorry to break it to you buddy, but this ain’t MvC2. Different game, different mechanics. Is it impressive that the Spiral player won against his character’s worst Matchups? Sure, quite impressive but that’s very likely the exception, not the rule. On average most others that would dare to try the same thing would likely get their shit wrecked.
People are starting rumblings of not banning steve because they are fucking weebs and just want acola to win. Did people really already forget the army of nobody steves in bracket? It will only get worse as time goes on, too. Unban steve and in a year the number of 'top players' that come out of nowhere and are only good with steve will double, lol.
Army of Steve’s in what bracket, a local? He’s been out for 3 years, anyone that wanted to use Steve is probably already using him, yet only 1 of them is considered one of the best players in the world. This community overreacts too much, he’s nothing like Meta Knight or Bayo where those characters would have multiple top players using them
