Such a fun city! ❤️
Beijing was such a cool city. You guys seemed like you had the best time ❤
It really is! We loved our time there. 😊
Beijing is a perfect blend of the ancient and the modern, with famous historical landmarks such as the Forbidden City, Temple of Heaven, and the Great Wall of China, alongside bustling neighborhoods, modern shopping malls, and a highly developed public transportation system.
You've definitely captured the essence of Beijing! It's a city of contrasts that always surprises. We had so much fun there and hope to return for a second visit. Thanks for watching our video! ☺️🫶

@mikeandashley ok. thanks. I will
Last time I went to the Mutianyu Great Wall, there were cats all over the place. Absolutely loved that Great Wall + cat experience! 😊
Yes! It’s so amazing. It really enhances the experience to feel so whimsical. Thank you for watching. ✨
I miss Beijing very much! It looks better now than decades ago where I was there, maybe because of the excellent introduction of yours.
Aw, thank you! I can assure you, we did nothing special aside from show the places we visited like we saw and experienced them. Beijing will always hold a special place in our hearts. 🥰
@@mikeandashley No, you guys absolutely did a great job showing us all the good things of Beijing that we may never have paid attention to before. I appreciate you guys for your good personalities, for being objective, positive, passionate, and bubbly.
Aw, thank you! 🥰 My love of street photography has me focus on little things about a city, so I like to show that in our b-roll. ☺️ Glad you enjoyed it. ✨

I have watched those clips before and appreciated a lot. But when you put them altogether and make a long documentary episode so I can enjoy it for a second time, I realize that your editing skill is so professional! No wonder I hit the subscribe button the first time I watched your works. They are just so immersive! I am pretty sure they are just great advertisements to attract friends to visit Beijing or China in general. I visited our capital city some times some years ago and have been missing it since. Thank you very much for bringing me back! I wish you are having best your times continuing your trip in my home country!
Thank you so much! We love making videos that transport you to new places! We’re grateful that you found the longer compilation video as enjoyable as the individual videos. And thanks for your compliment on our editing. I (Mike) work hard to try and put as much effort into our edits as I can while still trying to maintain a consistent posting schedule. 😊 We’re happy you enjoy our content. ✨

Compared to Shanghai and Shenzhen, Beijing might not be as fashionable or as diverse, but I think Beijing's core lies in a certain spirit, a spirit of "the emperor guarding the country's gate."
天子守边
That makes sense! We haven’t yet visited Shanghai and Shenzhen, but we look forward to it. We’re not really fashionable people, so maybe that’s why we vibe so hard with Beijing. 😅 Either way, it was the perfect starting point to our exploration here. ✨
Suggest going to Nanjing
We will for sure! ☺️ Any recommendations on what to do or eat when we are there?

The shredded ginger was for the dumplings. Usually you add the dark vinegar and dip your dumplings in it. You may eat them with the ginger as well. I think you clued in a little after. 😊 Enjoy your trip. Loved your videos. Keep it up! ❤

Beijing ist great! From walking through ancient treasures like the Summer Palace, Lama Temple, and the hutongs, to experiencing the futuristic vibes of places like Sanlitun and the CBD skyline, the city offers a dynamic mix of tradition and innovation, all connected by one of the world’s most efficient subway systems.
We couldn't agree more! 🥰❤️
Hello! I recently watched your vlog of your visit to Beijing, and it truly opened my eyes and gave me a lot to think about. I’m so happy to see you share your unique perspective on the city through your lens.
In the video, your exploration of iconic landmarks like the Forbidden City, the Great Wall, and Tiananmen Square really moved me. The way you expressed your respect and admiration for these historical sites made me realize how easily we can overlook cultural treasures in our daily lives.
I especially enjoyed the segment where you visited the Hutongs. It was clear that you appreciated the traditional alleyway life in Beijing. Perhaps it’s because these alleyways have a unique sense of time, making each walk feel like stepping into a different world. I’m glad that you were able to see the beauty in these everyday scenes-this was a fresh perspective for me too.
In addition, China has many other famous food, such as West Lake Sweet and Sour Fish, Iron Pot Braised goose... I hope you can try it at the next time.
If you have any question about China or Chinese food, just let me know. By the way, I'm looking forward to watch your video again.
Thank you so much! We’re happy you enjoyed our video. We really enjoyed filming in Beijing. It was an incredible first experience in China! We can’t wait to return to Beijing and try more food and visit more amazing places! 🤗

Epic video
Thank you! 😊
Fascinating trip!
It really was! Thank you for watching. 😊❤️
Also you guy nailed some of my favourite local Beijing food! Such as the Jing Jiang Roy Si (the shredded pork with the tofu wrap), the lamb and beef bronze hotpot. The only two things I wish you guys would have tried are Zha Jiang Mian (soybean sauce noodle w/pork), and Beijing local Bao Zi (pork bun) with Chao Gan (liver and intestines soup) which is a classic combo for local Beijing people. ❤
That’s good to know! They were so delicious. We can’t wait to return to Beijing and try even more of the regional cuisine! We’ll add those other dishes to our list for sure. Thanks for watching! 😋🤗
Amazing video, I love it
Thank you! We're so glad you enjoyed it! 😊
I watched the end of this video on the subway and felt compelled to leave another comment.
Thank you both so much for showing such respect and care for our Great Wall and for speaking out against defacing historical buildings with graffiti (though I must admit, our people aren’t entirely innocent in this regard). Your actions reflect the education and upbringing you received in the States, which you carry with you wherever you go. You should be proud of that.
I don’t know what happened to Ashley’s mom, but my heart broke when she mentioned that her mom would never get to see this. I sincerely hope you’ll have the chance to bring your loved ones to our country someday-we would be honoured to host you.
Paul Wall certainly made it clear just how much you’re welcome here-no one could have done a better job.
Enjoy your stay in China, and best wishes from Guangzhou!
Wow, thank you so much for your kind words. This is one of the nicest comments we’ve ever received. 🥰🫶🥹
We’ve been to a good number of historic buildings and monuments in our travels now, and everyone does it. Tourists, international and domestic, locals, kids adults… nowhere is safe apparently. It’s such a shame.
Her mom is doing just fine, she is just happy at home and has no plans to travel. ☺️
We’re so happy you enjoyed the video and are so grateful for your comment. 🙏
We will actually have a few videos from Guangzhou coming out over the next month or so, so if you have any recommendations on things to do and see that may be unique or off the beaten path, we’d be happy to hear them!
Thanks again for watching, we hope you have a great Spring Festival! 🤗
@@mikeandashley
Thank you, I wish you a great time during the Spring Festival as well.
Now, what I would recommend for your stay in Guangzhou... While Beijing is famous for its roasted duck and Chengdu for spicy beef, Guangzhou is celebrated for its 白切鸡 (Bái Qiē Jī, literally “white cut chicken”). There’s a local joke that no chicken can walk out of the city alive-a testament to just how much locals love eating chicken.
Among the four first-tier cities in mainland China, Guangzhou is the only one whose cuisine is widely loved and appreciated worldwide.
For breakfast, don’t miss out on 早茶 (Zǎo Chá, morning tea). The term can be misleading, as for many senior citizens, this “morning tea” often stretches for hours and ends up as afternoon tea. It’s one of the most unique dining experiences in China. Be sure to order at least one serving of 肠粉 (Cháng Fěn, rice noodle rolls), a classic local favourite.
A popular chain restaurant to try is 点都德 (Dim Dou Dak in Cantonese, Diǎn Dū Dé in Mandarin), which means “anything goes” or “everything here tastes good” (this phrase should really be spoken in Cantonese, as it holds no meaning in Mandarin). My family and I, having moved to Guangzhou about two decades ago, often visit this restaurant for dim sum. While not the top choice among locals, it’s certainly not a bad one. Another renowned option is 陶陶居 (Táo Táo Jū, freely translated as “Naughty Residence”).
For late-night cravings, 艇仔粥 (Tíng Zǎi Zhōu, or Boat Congee/Porridge) or any kind of congee is a comforting choice. Don’t miss 双皮奶 (Shuāng Pí Nǎi, double-skin milk), a must-try dessert that’s sure to satisfy your sweet tooth. For the most authentic taste, you may want to visit 顺德 (Shùn Dé, now a district in the city of Foshan, accessible through our subway system), just look for any of the traditional outlets called 民信老铺 (Mín Xìn Lǎo Pù).
Attraction: A classic yet touristy recommendation is 花城广场 (Huā Chéng Guǎng Chǎng, literally square in the Flower City, another name for Guangzhou), easily accessible by taking the subway to 珠江新城 (Zhū Jiāng New Town) on Line 3 or Line 5. From here, you’ll have a fantastic view of the famous Canton Tower, the Guangzhou International Finance Centre, and a bunch of other skyscrapers. Instead of taking the subway directly to the Canton Tower station, where you will find yourself standing underneath the colourful tower, I recommend visiting Flower City Square first. It offers a better vantage point and a much larger space to enjoy the skyline.
If you’re in town now, consider visiting the inaugural 大湾区灯会 (Dà Wān Qū Dēng Huì, Greater Bay Area Lantern Festival) in 南沙 (Nán Shā) District, located at the southernmost tip of the city. From what I’ve heard, it’s open from 3:30 p.m. to 10:30 p.m. Since it’s a lantern festival, the best time to visit is after nightfall, when you’ll be treated to a stunning spectacle of lights.
Although Nansha is farther from the central districts where most visitors stay, it offers more natural beauty and fewer crowds (with the obvious exception of the said festival). The district is also home to some of the city’s longest ecological belts, where local residents often go camping, enjoy the sun, and let their kids and furry friends run freely.
If you need a guide or any help at all, just let me know - I’d be more than happy to show you around! 😊
Wow! Thank you so much for this detailed list! 🤩
We’ve heard of Shun De actually from a local resident we met on the train over here! We’re very excited to try all of the local dishes and see things!
The lantern festival sounds so amazing! I know we have somewhere listed as a place to go, I’ll have to check with Ashley and see if it’s the same place. ☺️
Thank you again, we greatly appreciate the help and insight! ☺️🫶

As a local Beijing native (living in Canada), your amazing video brought me tears of Joy and made me so homesick now😂❤. Btw, the “door nail meat pie” got the name as the shape resembles the round thingy on the ancient Chinese city wall gate. You can Google the image of that if you are curious.

👍👍👍Yes , experience it with own lens and senses, not through media.
Exactly! It’s amazing how many people just take someone’s word for something. That’s fine for some, but not for us. We have to see things for ourselves. We even encourage people to not take our word for things. As our opinions are our own, and based solely off our experiences. Thanks for watching! 😊

It is great to see people like you and Mike who are willing to explore and experience China for yourselves instead of listening to the biased media in the west, as a Chinese myself, i have lived in the west for the better part of my life and i have very rarely seen the media report anything positive out of China. and YES, the country has a lot of issues, but the people are friendly and kind, life is diverse and vibrant. it is truly amazing to see you guys smile and laugh. and the expressions you make when you taste some of the incredible foods with the first bites.

We’re happy we came and witnessed the country for ourselves. Initially, it was a bit nerve-wracking because we grew up with the media telling us how bad China is, but coming here has been an eye-opening experience and one we are thankful for.

The round matel plates on the walkway are indicators of the underground cable conduit.
That makes sense. We’ve seen them before in other countries as well. I guess they just look more interesting and exotic to us because we can’t read Chinese. 😅😂

In addition to cities, natural scenic spots in China are strongly recommended: Zhangjiajie, Huangshan, Jiuzhaigou and Guilin. ......
In addition, Yunnan Province in China is recommended, where the seasons are like spring, and each season has different scenery, such as Shilin, Dianchi, Cangshan, Erhai, Moon Valley and Yulong Snow Mountain. ......
Yes! We can’t wait to explore the more natural side and beauty of China as well, though, we may wait for it to warm up a bit. 😅😂 On this trip, we’ll probably stick to the cities and then the next time we come back, we can venture out into nature! ✨ Thanks for the great suggestions on places to visit. 🙏
Tanghulu is mainly made of hawthorn. Now it has been improved and many fruits can be used to make tanghulu. The one you've eaten is made of hawthorns.
Yes! We are obsessed with tanghulu now! Ashley says hawthorn is her favorite. 😋 I think I prefer strawberry.
Next time you go to Beijing try the traditional Beijing snack "Fried GuanChang灌肠"@@mikeandashley

I’ll be visiting Beijing next month. I’m very nervous as to it being my first solo country trip. I’m trying to do as much research as I can possibly do to prepare myself for this trip. Any tips are welcome 🙏 please!! 😊
How exciting! Beijing is a surprisingly easy city to navigate.
Couple of tips: book everything in advance (especially hotels and attractions).
Set up Alipay and WeChat ahead of time (make sure to verify your accounts so you can rent bikes and ride the buses and metros).
Didi is the equivalent to Uber or Grab and is very convenient and cost-effective. You can use it in the Alipay app.
We only needed cash once, but it is nice to have a small amount on you in case your international card doesn’t work.
Carry your passport with you at all times.
Google doesn’t work in China, so use Apple Maps and Translate if you have an iPhone.
Have two VPNs in case one doesn’t work. You want to set them up ahead of time. We have our recommended VPNs listed in the video description.
Beijing is much more spread out than we anticipated, so try not to cram too much into one visit.
Have fun and try not to worry! Chinese people are incredibly friendly and you’ll have a great time. Just know that your plans may change and go with the flow. 🥰
❤❤
🥰🥰
The “pancake” you had is a traditional home food in Beijing. It is a stir fry of shredded flatbread with veggies and meat.
That’s so interesting! We love learning about new foods and their origins. 😊
Will definitely go to this place despite media portrayed that our country, the Philippines is on a maritime c*nflict with China. Hope you can go back to Beijing and visit the CBD filled with skyscrapers and Sanlitun district.
We went to Sanlitun on our first day. ☺️ The sky scrapers and interactive art displays were amazing!
53:47 reminded me of Kara everytime she tries awesome food, @KaraandNate
Oh yea?! ☺️😂 We LOVE @karaandnate, so this is a great compliment! Ashley does have a super cute reaction to trying delicious foods! 🥰
Hey - great video! I’m travelling across China next month and curious as to what the issue was with Alipay at the beginning of your video? Is it easy to set up and get working?
Also (not sure when you travelled) but does the Beijing Metro now take foreign cards for “tap and go”? Sounds like Apple Maps is the way to go! Thanks!
Hey thanks! I thought I left that in, but I must have forgot… 😅😅 The issue was that I entered my payment password in wrong. 😂
Yes, Alipay is insanely easy to set up. And so convenient.
We haven’t tried to just tap on/off with our cards, but Alipay works great, so if you have that set up, you should be all set.
We hope you enjoy your travels. It’s one of the most seamless experiences we’ve had traveling, once you get over the language barrier. But everyone is so helpful and friendly.
Let us know if you have any other questions! 😊

Thank you so much! We're looking forward to the Chinese New Year! 😊
haha it’s so ironic where you wrote down your names 😂
We’ve heard! 😂 We must have good intuition haha.
Hello, I think Beijing has a wide and developed place.
We agree! It’s an amazing city for sure.
Theres been a new visa policy that came out recently for Australians and many other nationalities, visa free visits for 30 days! You could literally rock up and enter china visa free. Im so trilled to not have to go thru lengthy visa application processes, and just book a flight and be there the next day!
That is so awesome! The visa process was a headache, and while we’re glad we did it, it would have been so cool not to have had to! 😅🤣
just crazy how most of us go to school for 9 years to learn English and nowadays it is hard to find many people in China who can understand basically English let alone speak
I’m not sure what you’re saying here. You learn English for 9 years in China?
@@mikeandashley Allow me to shed some light on this.
I believe this comment is essentially a critique of our country’s educational system, where every Chinese student is required to complete nine years of compulsory education (six years in grade school, three in middle school) and another three years in high school, with English being one of the three core subjects taught, alongside Chinese literature and math.
This system has faced intense criticism for the very reason mentioned in the comment: most Chinese people are not bilingual enough to communicate effectively in English. Considering that the majority of Chinese citizens do not live in first-tier citeis or those frequently visited by overseas travelers - and thus have little to no opportunity to speak English - it’s not surprising that many struggle with it. Allow me to be frank, many also have difficulty speaking proper Mandarin.
That being said, I’m not entirely sure that we actually spend nine full years learning English. I was born in the late ’80s, and I didn’t start learning English until the fourth or fifth grade. Perhaps kids today begin their English classes on day one, but I’m not sure.
Interesting. I mean, in the US, we are meant to spend four years, in high school learning a foreign language, and I learned more Spanish working in kitchens and hotels than I ever learned in school haha. Some people are just better at learning things practically out in the world than in a classroom. I know that’s the case for me. 😅
Thanks for sharing though! That makes a lot of sense. ☺️
The girl is very beautiful and has a nice voice.

20:13, Really, some tourists sites are close on Monday? No way, wow that's unexpected. It's similar to my home, Malaysia, but only some restaurants and shop close on Monday.
25:40, Sometimes in some places, they don't accept international credit card like Japan, so that's good use you alipay as long as it's still working in China and for Japan, bring lots of cash.
41:57, Oh the chicken wing taste good and delicious. Never try chicken wing in China, but hopefully in May or June when I revisit Beijing, Shanghai and flying to Chengdu and Chongqing for the 1st time, I am looking forward to my trip although it's gonna be hot, humid and sometimes rain.
Only the main government sites like Tiananmen Sq & the Forbidden City. Many other sites are still open.
I see.
Now Air Canada have direct flight from Vancouver to Beijing (suddenly Toronto don't have Air Canada direct flight anymore. But they can transfer in Vancouver).
That's great to hear! 😊
驴肉火烧,我也爱吃哈哈
