"IMAGINE" follows the story of Millie, a little girl who dreams of being a dancer, yet suffers from Niemann Pick Type C; an extremely rare, incurable disease which causes neurological decline and dementia. Only 800 people around the world suffer from this, the majority of whom are innocent children who were born with this horrible genetic condition.
17 YEAR OLD FILM-MAKER RELEASES CAPTIVATING SHORT FILM TO BUILD AWARENESS OF RARE FATAL GENETIC DISEASE
First, Carl Mason learnt that his nine year old neighbour suffers from Niemann Pick Type C, then he raised £6000 to produce a full-scale short film to help increase awareness of the extremely rare disease. The young film-maker secured collaborative support from over 20 television and film professionals to create a film that could aid fundraising efforts and also raise medical awareness of NP-C.
The screenplay was written by John F. McDonald, a multi-award winning screenwriter, with the careful guidance of NP-C charity Hope for Hollie, Niemann Pick UK, INPDA and Great Ormond Street Hospital. What is also particularly impressive is that this teenager secured a production team including camera, audio, editing, costume and make-up professionals who all work full-time in the film industry with diverse experience ranging from ITV's Broadchurch, Doctor Who, Shaun Of The Dead, Hot Fuzz, Channel 4 Drama, BBC Worldwide and more. Carl said “Working with such a seasoned team has made my directing début particularly special. I very much hope that the film will inspire donations to the charities involved and increase awareness of this horrible disease within both the medical profession and public alike. Obviously it has been an extremely enjoyable project to work on, but the fact is, this is a fatal disease that barely anyone has ever heard of and I wanted to change that.”

I want to applaud that 17-year old boy, Carl, for his very heartwarming and meaningful initiative in gathering a team to produce such a film, to raise awareness and help families dealing with this disease. It is a beautiful initiative. And the film is well-done.

I also know the parents know the doctor's trying to help the kid, but they just can't help it when the world is being unfair. Life and death are something we must face sooner or later, it's just hard to accept it; no matter who there's always a time when death cannot be accepted by them.

+Nemo sunk my Nautilus Like no one knows about diabetes, and they have to resort to RUclips to tell their story. It is a debilitating disease, but here are industries to help diabetics. They are not children dying is obscurity. You are the type of person who sees a child dying and says to the surrounding crowd what about me.
+Carl Mason A very sad film, but if I had not seen this film, I would never of heard of Niemann-Pick Type C, because it is so rare. It portrayed the pain and suffering and feeling of despair the parents must have felt to know their child has this condition and that they will have to watch their child deteriorate. After having lost a son this tore into my heart....brought chills n tears...beautifully done.
I'm from Costa Rica. My cousin was a very healthy kid, until he got strangely sick at 6. It took around 6 more years to have a Niemann-Pick diagnosis. I was away for a while and we had the chance to say good bye. But when I saw him again, five years later, he couldn't even stare at me. I couldn't believe it, it was so difficult to accept. I was scared of saying hello to him everytime I went into his room and he would cry everytime. One night, they had to take him to the hospital and he died next morning. He was 14 years old, but for me he will always be 6. In Costa Rica there are around 20 kids with Niemann-Pick in the Hospital Nacional de Niños, but so far I couldn't find a group or organization giving support for the families. Still, I'm sure your work is helping to cause impact on people, thanks for caring about the relevance of this subject.

Why neurology is so undiscovered compared to other fields. Sometimes doctors cant diagnose disease and gives the wrong treatment to the patient, which makes his condition worse. Thanks to videos, short films like this which develops awareness.
when i first watch this, i was thinking "no way thats a real disease" and then at the end it shows footages of children who is suffering from this disease and i start reading the description and the comment. good job, you are accomplishing your intention in making this short film.

I did too.
I remember when I was studying this disease for a medicine exam. It was a large group of severe metabolic disorders which I couldn't get into my brain being my last exam of the year. I can recall my friends and I complaining about learning this type of conditions ''we are never ever going to see this thing in the hospital'' ''It's a rare disorder why do we have to learn this'' ''Gosh, studying this is a waste of time''. Years passed ... and I came across this short film. Niemann-Pick is no longer a sphingolipidosis or a lysosomal storage disease for me. Not a bunch of signs, symptoms and causes recited by a 20-year-old version of myself. Now, is the face and story of this little girl. Although it's just a film, it made me realise that my approach of my career was not the correct one as a student and this really made me feel so embarrassed of myself. Thanks to this 9.50 minutes my paradigm was shaken and I could not be more grateful. There are no illnesses but only people who are ill and need our support and love.

Through out the end stance sequence all i could think was of her growing up and achieving great things, falling in love, getting married, having children, growing old. All things she never got to experience, the world is cruel.

poor kid....this movie touched me. i know people who are in need and it troubles me that I can't help them.
if I have to say one line for this short film, I would say "its the most wonderful short film I have ever seen." the dancing scene was force to make me cry. great
Great Film. I am a biophysicist in training. I know a lot about genetics, biochem and HOW to figure things out using simulations and laws of physics. Movies like this inspire future scientist like me on WHAT it is worth working on and why I spend so much energy and time today on studying for really hard exams. I have never heard of NP-C but it is on my "stuff worth researching" list now and I might tell others...and who knows what that will lead to.
So a small heads up on the state of the art of genetic diseases in general: There is an enzyme called CRISPR/CAS9 which can be used as a technology to edit DNA to our will like we can edit a text file on a computer (oversimplified) - maybe even in living humans, but this to my knowledge has never been done as of April 2016. It is highly controversial of course, people are even suspicious of genetically modified food and rightfully so. We need to understand and address the abuse potential of such a technology, so we as a society cannot rush. But if we understand which enzymes failed and why and what we need to change in the genetic material to fix it there might be a cure out there for diseases like this. The problem HOW to change a genetic sequence in humans might be solved in a decade or two, but to which concrete sequence we want to change the genetic code into that it will cure something is a big challenge remaining.

+Crazy payne.x I didn't get it. She was ten years old in every scene except the first one, but then she said years had passed. The film really doesn't explain much about the disease at all, just that she had seizures, wobbly legs, and trouble talking. Why/how did she die? Very confused.
+Ivy B Definitely interesting to see how the film is clear to some and not to others. The idea was that the narration was told from after she had passed as she reflects and tells the story of each scene hence why she is ten years old throughout. This could have been clearer. And this is down to personal preference of course, but we were not exactly trying to explain about the disease in detail, we were in fact trying to do the opposite - the purpose is to make general audiences and consumers aware that such a disease exists and affects families; therefore encouraging audiences to read more into the disease and its charities. Simply trying to engage this "entertainment" medium to captivate audiences.

Awesome short film. I rarely get emotional, but this short film truly makes you think of such heartbreaking trials people have to go through in life. It's not fair. People should not have to feel this way, people should be able to live a full life. I wish I could help cure diseases and such like this but I knew it is incredibly hard or impossible. I was a sick kid growing up. It affected everything in my family. Caused financial stress. Created friction because my mom gave me more attention than my sister and i'm sure it hurt her some how. created a bond between mom and I, but a distance between dad and i. I'm lucky, i grew out of my condition. But in adulthood, you realise how it wasn't just you as a sick kid. It was a family affliction.

I'm 17, and have a small production company in the US. I've made several TV commercials, weddings, corporate promos, but haven't had much time with both school and basically a full time job to make short films like this. I just have to make time! How long did it take from pre-production to post-production to create this beautiful piece?

She didn't die you know! That's why she said "I'll always be 10 years old" in the last part of the film because her disease' caused it. Remember when she said, she's cant do the things she used to do like how she sings, and danced when she was still a little kid because she is struggling to remember the words, that means her brain is continually losing the capability to memorize and even remember! That's why she said that she will always be 10 years old even though she's really not. My own opinion :) Please respect...

This brings home the heart wrenching truth about life. We all think that we are hard done by when most of us really have nothing to whine about.
These kids show more bravery and grit to shame most people for their shallow self pity.
If this didn't bring a tear to your eye then you either are not human or think that hardships are boats made of steel.
This always gives me goosebumps Carl! Love this film and I love what you have done for Hope for Hollie and the NP-C community not just in this country but world wide! That was truly amazing. Sad, but amazing. The little girl was a better actress that most child actors in Hollywood. I have never heard of this disease until now, and it will stick with me because of this film.
