Students are not learning this, and many have an appalling lack of knowledge about the past tense and past participle-- in English. One student was on his way to an M.A. in English. After a few days he came up to me and was furious that no one-- not grade school, not high school, nor the professors of English had EVER mentioned parts of speech,, grammatical uses of parts of speech,, or principal parts of verbs. Hi Anne. I'm 70 and people of my generation were also taught grammar. If we turned in an assignment with spelling or grammar errors, we lost marks. The questions that form this "test" remind me of what we learned as part of Grade 3 grammar. I cringe when I hear words used incorrectly, split infinitives, the use of "good" instead of "well" and the ultimate betrayal of the English language, "your" instead of "you're.". I guess my age is showing. I'm in Canada and the education system here is far from perfect. From what I understand, children in elementary school are not being taught penmanship. This is appalling! Those are my complaints for now. COVID has made me crankier than usual!

      @@lovesmusic36 LOL, COVID has made most of us cranky! Hang in there! Scary times, especially for those of us who are older. In all fairness, the only practical use for cursive now is as a skill necessary for reading older writings. Sadly, “penmanship” has become superfluous. But, I also cringe at how bad grammar is so pervasive today. One of my pet peeves is the use of the adjective ‘everyday’, not as an adjective, but where ‘every day’ is really what is meant. Language always changes over time, but this feels more like a disintegration!

    • @lovesmusic36
      @lovesmusic36 3 года назад +7

      @@altitudeiseverything3163 Cursive is necessary, I believe, if only to be able to sign your name. I use cursive "every day!" Sorry, I had to work that in! I make lists and notes. I don't think I'd want to print by hand everything when I need to put pen to paper. I also write children's picture books, essays, song lyrics and poetry. Occasionally I prefer to do that by hand rather than on the computer. Again, having to print rather than use cursive writing would be very time consuming. Another irritating grammatical error is when I hear radio personalities reporting traffic and use "alternate route" when it should be "alternative." Social media and texting (the most irritating form of communication) have destroyed the English language. I think I should stop here. I'm aggravating myself! Stay well. Best regards from Canada!

    This is a good, challenging test for non-native speakers. Frankly, this isn't taught enough to native speakers. I taught English composition for 12 years in Cambodia and we always began with the parts of speech. They are the building blocks of writing. Writing becomes easier once you understand the parts of speech and their function in forming sentences. You then learn sentence structure and after that move on to single and multiple paragraphs. I'd encourage any non-native speakers to spend time learning and identifying the parts of speech. [I got 100%, so I'm guessing I learned something myself while teaching!].

    This was an excellent test. Even though, I was born in America, I learned standard English in school. However, there are so many American born citizens who will be unable to pass this test or they will miss several questions. Has anyone ever wondered why the educators in America make Americans take English in school?

      These aren’t really fair for recent immigrants. They are expressions going back many, many years.
      During colonial times, a bed’s mattress was often a sack filled with anything soft, including such things as hay. Going out on a limb meant taking a big risk. Be careful going out on a limb. If you go too far, it might break off.
