I am 22 and I have wanted to do this since I was like 10 never did family didn't have the money to allow me to... This has got to be one of most fun looking sports
I'm 45, my parents couldn't afford it when I was a kid. I was a descent skater though. Looking to join a beginner adult league. You're young it should be much easier. Yes it is expensive though. Where there is a will there is a way, just do it!
@@patricksheehan8157 if you build the kit up over time it is possible. That's what I had to do. Having to learn all these skills as I go with the uni team but I'm progressing.
After playing hockey for two months, I've found you can learn so much by asking around at your rink for advice.. If you're willing to listen and practice which usually includes falling over a lot! Always try and play in pads as much as possible, soon it will become second nature and my one big tip, keep your head up and be looking around you all the time otherwise you will get hit!! Best sport in the world
Hope you're still playing 9 years later. Simply talking to people at the rink is a great resource. Going in armed with knowledge from internet resources like this is great, but guys at the rink are always happy to give advice.
On January 2020 at the age of 70, I decided I wanted to be a proficient recreational ice skater. After lessons and three months of skating 2-3 times a week I thought about trying ice hockey. I saw an Anaheim Ducks flyer "Learn to Hockey." Decided to sign up for the FREE program...then Covid hit. Learn to Hockey didn't start up again until Nov 2021. Very happy that I completed the program. Now I ALMOST ready to join a Rookie League. Glad I viewed the video on what I need to know before joining a hockey league.
Hi my name is Belinda I'm 14 years old. I was one of the ten kids at my school were selected to be in the ice hockey team. Before this video I did not know a thing about ice skating or ice hockey.thank you for helping.
I'm 63 years old and have been watching hockey since 1970 but have never been on ice skates. Two days from now I will be out on the ice for the very first time taking my very first ice skating lesson. I am so excited and nervous at the same time. I've learned much from the Hockey Tutorial videos and hope to someday skate well enough to play hockey at the local rink. I'm a recovering covid patient and my doctors believe that the cool air of the rink and the exercise will greatly benefit my recovery. Thank you Hockey Tutorial for providing such clear and concise instruction that even I can understand 😄.
@@alexabelson4081 Great! Thanks for asking. I've been skating almost every day for the past several weeks now and I signed up for a two month hockey training class that begins the first week of December. Skating is so much fun. I played in my first ever hockey scrimmage last week. I told the guys that I never played before but they didn't care. They said so what play come on and play anyway. When it was done they said I did great for my first time but I knew they were just being nice. I loved it! I can't wait to start learning how to play.
I thought that starting hockey at 12 was way to late but when you think about it it’s never to late to start (update: i’ve improved ALOT since the last time i commented this)
Hi, my name is Eva and i'm 11 years old. I am new at hockey but had a few lessons. Your videos actually help me skate a lot. I am thinking of joining a youth team and watching your videos will help me. Thank you!!
+Eva G Same here but im from Australia and we dont get snow so i can only skate like once a week but im slowley getiing there :) and you video do help! @hockey tutorial
I'm 17 and have wanted to do ice hockey for a while. I can ice skate but have never tried ice hockey and i am worried that if i start now will i just be worse than everybody else who has been doing it for a while. (obviously i will be at first) I am wondering if it is even worth learning as i would like to play for a team
This is probably way too late, but I just have to say that I'm 16 and just started playing hockey last month, no prior ice or hockey experience at all except for a few public skating times. When I first started on the team my level was very far from the other players and it felt extremely embarrassing and terrible. But I stuck it out because I knew if I quit I'd still suck and I'd never get to play a sport that I really wanted to. My solution to the problem was to attend extra lessons to get my skills up very quickly. Now it's been only a few weeks and I'm already nearly up to par with the other players. If you'd like to join a team as you train like I did (because I didn't know better) it's totally fine, just make sure it's for rec purposes (without tryouts) and let your coaches and your team know that it's your first time playing hockey. I'd say go for it, if you don't play now you're just going to keep saying 'I'm too old'.
I mean obviously you're gonna suck at first, but don't let that intimidate you! I'm 20 and just started skating about 3 months ago and everyone's been really cool and understanding. People will understand that you're new to the sport and people have been really nice and helpful to me since I started. I know how intimidating it is, but don't overthink it. People in the hockey community are pretty nice from my experience
I started when I was 25, yeah I wasn't good at first but put in the work and you'll learn. After a year I'm now the best defenseman on my team, gotta work though.
+Oscaroonee neenee I honestly never took an ice skating class, just self taught with lots of falling to be my teacher lol. But crossovers would be to advanced for your basic ice skating class for sure
I'm 18 and in college now and luckily I just happen to live like 10min from an ice rink now and I've been into hockey like all my life because I grew up a huge Dallas Stars fan and went to a lot of games. I practice stick handling and shooting pucks for fun but never really had the time, money or access to an ice rink to play in a league when I was younger but now I'm playing pick up games and I love it I'm a decent skater and am thinking about joining an adult league I and watch all your vids keep it up!
I'm a beginner player at 63 and doing quite well(HA! In my mind) because I have 50+ years of ski mountaineering under my belt, some of it quite extreme. You come to Montana, USA for a Winter Chris. We'll ski powder in the mornings, skate together in the afternoons, learn from each other and have some good fun doing it. Then "Fluid Dynamics Workshop"(two pints each) to soak sore muscles from the inside. Deal? I might look a bit goofy totally decked out it hockey gear and still a rookie but my motto is, "Protection is cheap insurance". Ice is a harder landing than snow. I'm running on all original equipment(read no surgeries) and I'd like to keep it that way.
Just wanted to let you know that even all these years later, your videos are invaluable. I’m comfortable with 80% of these skills and with this video, realized its time to get out with a stick. Thank you for all your work in Hockey Tutorial.
Before I first played and just skated, I couldn't stop, turn properly or skate backwards very well but when I played with a stick and puck, it came naturally to me and I just did it. Maybe because I was focusing on the task and my legs and feet just naturally did the skating for me.
I'm 14 and about to start Freshman year, I'm going to play on the Guys Hockey Team (I'm a girl) and I'm scared it'll be too rough because I'm Tall but really skinny.
The problem with playing with guys is that they are naturally bigger and stronger than you. I’m a trans guy who has to play on a girls team, so I know.
I've been playing hockey since I was 8 and I play on an all boys team. They play rough and it's scary at first but once you build up tough skin it'll all be good.

I saw someone bald take off his hat after he skated, and steam/mist came off his head. From his head. While he was taking and not taking. The sweat is evaporating rapidly in the dense cold air is why.
when your on the ice does it feel slightly bumpy in any way shape or form? I'm a goodish skater, but I'm learning and improving because of where I am for my Christmas job (dundrum on ice, in Dublin Ireland) and we don't have a snow machine but we do resurface the ice each night. the skates we have for customers arnt super sharp right now but they do eventualy get sharpened semi-regularily. im asking if myself getting my own pair is worth it? and if I did I'd be getting an extra size up so they will fit me for the next 2-3 years. the videos are a great help (as well as other staff members) but I can't help but feel like they have an advantage on hockey skates, while I'm in a pair of hard plastic boots with semi descent blades. My third question question is what's the beneficial difference of laces over clasps? where I work it would be OK to Ware the skates all day, but if I could I'd take them off even for a break while running around on the carpet swapping people's shoes for skates or visa versa. so I'd prefer clasps if I could, but if there was a real benefit to laces I'd get them. thanks.
I know I'm VERY late but thanks for this! I'm 11 and I was convinced I wanted to do figure skating, but I went to a couple of lessons and I just wasn't interested. hockey has always been a bit daunting to me since I'm not particularly tall and very skinny and there's seven year olds I've seen that play and they've got six packs and could knock me clean out with one punch. but I've decided to give it a go, I haven't done any sport since I did football and that also got boring for me after a couple months. thanks again!
I completely agree with the bit about bad habits!! I learned to check stop but I would angle back and face right and lean on my outside edge of my inside (right) foot. But when I went to hockey for the first time, we did pivots and after that stop I was in no shape to start again or Mohawk or anything :( So I made myself stop that and learned it the right way over Christmas with some help from your videos :)
I wanna start hockey cause my friend plays it. I’ve played it but it was not on ice, it was on carpet and drive, we did knee hockey (which is mini hockey on your knees) and (driveway hockey is were it’s hockey but half court and well, on a driveway) I’m hoping if I start on the Ice it will be easy since I watched this.
Hi, I have always wanted to play a hockey game or start a seasonal rec team to find a new sport. I think that hockey is fun and I really really want to try it out. How shall I try, I don’t know if I can skate, and I don’t have access to an ice rink.
Thank you my friend👍🏼 Going to play slme Icehockey with my mates. We are all over 30 and yeah we do have some skills and this information was needed. I subscribed, keep it up bro. Greetings from Zürich 🙋🏻♂️
I turn 32 soon and just picked up some skates as I live walking distance from a hockey rink that has open skate time. I’m intrested in a rec team but don’t know with 0 experience at this age if I’m to old.
Could practicing on Rollerblades during the times I don't have access to the ice a good idea to improve my skating? different fundamental I understand but could it help?
Im 15 i played hockey almost a year last year but i have played on out door rinks so much should i go play hockey again becouse i have friends there and i love hockey
Hockey Tutorial I came across your site when I was looking at some sport specific training for hockey. Actually I think your instructions are fantastic. you are clear, concise and explain things in understandable terms. Since I am planning on learning to skate in August, I look forward to advancing to some of the things here you are teaching. Thanks and I look forward to watching more of your videos.
I didn't understand when you said to do stuff in your hockey shorts when the video is about learning things before joining a team?? I did 6 weeks of training with a team before I was allowed to spend money on equipment.
Im 14, and i know how to rollerblade decently well. I can shoot ok. You think i still have a chance at being really good at ice hockey? Never skated on ice before :/
I think youll have a fairly decent chance of skating well. Before i started i would blade and surf, i think it helped loads with balance on the ice because i was already used to it.
I just starded 4 months ago i was 21 when i starded. find a team that is on a beginner level their a lot of them out there people will get you in to it. and also if you enjoy it you will learn it
I have a Question: I played Ice Hockey for about 7 years. I startet playing Hockey with an Age of three and I stopped playing it with an Age of 10. Right know I'm 15 Years Old, and my Skating skills are normal, but I'am very good at Stick handling. Do you think I have any Chance to play in a Teenage Hockey team?
That would be down to the level of the league or team you want to join and also the coach of the team. Go watch the team you want to join play or train and see if its a level you can join in with.
Well, i'm getting back into it. There's two ways to look at it. 1) You should've never quit and stayed playing. 2) Accept that fact you quit, and come back stronger.
Brilliant, I've been searching the internet for this kind of info today and have just stumbled across this in your videos, another great one, i should have just looked here first, keep it up!
I'm 13 years old and I have wanted to play hockey for a very long time. I feel like it's too late to start but I'm not too sure. I know how to skate but I don't know how to stop. Any advice anyone?
There are some videos on his channel but search on plough stops, practice those, then shift your weight more on one side than the other so you can eventually hockey stop
When doing crossovers is it a thing to not doing a crossover at high speeds? My skates always come out from under me. I guess I'm trying to turn too sharply. PS I'm talking about going around the corner of the rink at speed
I am 14 and I love hockey. this year i will be playing. I am in a hockey academy in lvl 3. I am terrified. I can't do much with my stick but get some shots and in a good skater. I don't want ppl to judge Cause they have experience
Hi my name is Toby i want to start playing hockey i`m 13 and i live in Charleston we only have a travel team and i really want to play but i don`t want to pull my team down any tips please.
Hi Chris, love your videos and find them very informative for a skater at my novice level. I have a question pertaining to cross overs. I find that when i do cross overs on my stronger side, the back skate that stays on the ice while the other foot is crossing over tends to lose grip on the ice. It feels like it is slipping out from under me. Do you know why this is happening and what i can do to correct it? I do not think it is a sharpening problem.
This can be due to a few different reason, you might have blunt skates so they can't bite the ice properly round corners. It could be the way you're crossing over or even the position the boot and blade are in. When was the last time you had your skates sharpened and how often do you skate?
Don't play it to try and become a pro. Play it for the fun of the game. Everyone has a chance to be a pro no matter what age they start (I just started at 14.) Just play the game with dedication and you'll have a chance.
Ryan fro Man I'll be having played for a year in about 10 days (I'm 15 right now) and I'm already wayyyy better than I was before xD Won't even take you 5 months guaranteed... Although I still have trouble stopping on the left side because I never got the time to practice. I'm sure you'll have lots of fun this hockey season :D
Hockey Tutorial fucking love the confidence you have in all of us :3 great video man! Going to learn to ice skating soon and when I grasped that I wanna play ice hockey too :)
Even if you start playing when you're 6 years old, a vast majority of players never play professionally. If you start playing when you're 14 years old, your chances will go down even further. My tip is to just start playing hockey for fun, and you'll see what happens when you get older. If you don't play professionally when you're older, you'll still have a new fun hobby.
Love your videos guys!! Explained in a very detailed and clear manner so that even us beginners can easily understand. Really appreciate you brother! By the way Chris, who is your favorite NHL team? I'm a die-hard Anaheim Ducks fan and I've been watching them since the Mighty Ducks era when they had the movies and the Disney cartoon.

This should help me a lot! I’m going to try out for Mississippi State hockey next season
Glad they helped, thanks for watching.
Might be 10 years old but still super helpful. Can’t wait to start my first season next year.
I just watched my team won the stanley cup, now im hooked with hockey
Hi, I have always wanted to play a hockey game or start a seasonal rec team to find a new sport. I think that hockey is fun and I really really want to try it out. How shall I try, I don’t know if I can skate, and I don’t have access to an ice rink.
Thank you my friend👍🏼
Going to play slme Icehockey with my mates. We are all over 30 and yeah we do have some skills and this information was needed.
I subscribed, keep it up bro.
Greetings from Zürich 🙋🏻♂️
I’m 40. I want to get into ice hockey. Excited to learn!
+Cansin Hardy-Egritag 1,000,000% its a fantastic way to develop the fundamental skills.
Thanks, I'm planning on joining hockey when I graduate to the 6th grade, I'm kinda nervous, but this helped.
Riley Jaysaurus Thats awesome! good luck. Glad we could help.
I love this channel bc he explains everything so good
Thank you Brian.
I’m wondering if I have to take powerskating before playing hockey

This is absolutely great summary! Thank you Chris!
Garażowy Hokej Thank you for watching, glad I could help.
I wish there was more hockey in Slovenia. 😢 Would like to join rookie league so much.
This video is perfect for where I'm at today.
Sweet we Just got a place to skate at and I will get it a go
I just starded 4 months ago i was 21 when i starded. find a team that is on a beginner level their a lot of them out there people will get you in to it. and also if you enjoy it you will learn it
I have a Question:
I played Ice Hockey for about 7 years.
Same exact scenario for me man.
Blake Bailey It sucks, doesn´t it?
Well, i'm getting back into it. There's two ways to look at it.
1) You should've never quit and stayed playing.
2) Accept that fact you quit, and come back stronger.
loving all your videos, thanks!
Hockeytutorial I play inline hockey will there be a big difference between the two???
Also do you think you could make a video about how to block a shot?
Great suggestion. Thanks for watching
Brilliant, I've been searching the internet for this kind of info today and have just stumbled across this in your videos, another great one, i should have just looked here first, keep it up!
Fromatic Thanks for watching and for the kind words..
Awesome video, my friend. Great overview!
Nice moves mate
Aayyy im from Peterborough 😍😍 Id love to play but dont have a clu how to go about joining a rec club
Cheers and Thanks , Bro !
i can only backwards cross over in one direction well and hockey stop on one side well is this good enough ?
I'm 13 years old and I have wanted to play hockey for a very long time. I feel like it's too late to start but I'm not too sure. I know how to skate but I don't know how to stop. Any advice anyone?
There are some videos on his channel but search on plough stops, practice those, then shift your weight more on one side than the other so you can eventually hockey stop
When doing crossovers is it a thing to not doing a crossover at high speeds? My skates always come out from under me. I guess I'm trying to turn too sharply. PS I'm talking about going around the corner of the rink at speed
New York Greaser I don't think that would be a thing, but I only roller skate so I'm not sure if I'm right.
I am 14 and I love hockey. this year i will be playing. I am in a hockey academy in lvl 3. I am terrified. I can't do much with my stick but get some shots and in a good skater. I don't want ppl to judge Cause they have experience
Hi my name is Toby i want to start playing hockey i`m 13 and i live in Charleston we only have a travel team and i really want to play but i don`t want to pull my team down any tips please.
you should also know how to hockey stop on both sides
Cool video, chris.
Thank you!!!⭐️💪💪🙌🙌🙏👌🎉
Hey Chris I played hockey before when I was 7 now I'm 12 if I start again do I have a chance to be pro
Don't play it to try and become a pro. Play it for the fun of the game. Everyone has a chance to be a pro no matter what age they start (I just started at 14.) Just play the game with dedication and you'll have a chance.
I'm just learning how to skate and shit and I'm 15 m8 lol I'll be ready in 5 months
I'm six years old, but I'm worried I'm too old to play. I see five year olds out there playing. Do you think it is to late to learn and start playing?
Thank you I'm in a hockey team I'm 8 thanks
Glad we could help buddy.
Hey Chris! I'm 17 and really want to start playing hockey, is it too late for me to start learning?
Never to late to learn.
Hockey Tutorial fucking love the confidence you have in all of us :3 great video man! Going to learn to ice skating soon and when I grasped that I wanna play ice hockey too :)
is that at the peterborough phatons arena
we love you man and thank you for all the videos.. But you need a wireless mic man..
We normally always use one, this was filmed after training so didn't have it with me. Thanks for the tip.
Does this also go for roller hockey?
is it too late to start playing, I’m 14, do you recon I could go far with it or would it just have to be a hobby
I want to play hockey but I can skate backwards okay do you think I am good enough to play house league thanks
How often should I skate if I want to get into hockey I'm 18 btw
at least once or twice a week bud
Cam Free every day if you can
Love your videos guys!!
Michael Valleau "Here come the Mighty DucksBurning up the ice,Just try and stop the Mighty DucksAnd you're gonna pay the price!" Sorry you got that stuck in my head haha. Thanks for the support, we love sharing tips and can't thank you and everyone enough for allow us to share what we know and love. I'm a Habs fan, I hope this doesn't change anything :p
Hockey Tutorial Mad cool bro! No hatred for the Habs lol, my Dad is a Canadiens fan and plus they're in the Eastern Conference so it's hard to find any animosity for them. Now if you liked the Kings, Sharks, or Chicago, we might have some problems! Just kidding, it's all hockey!
The Mighty Ducks cartoon was really what made me a fan of the NHL team. After that, I was sold!
Hockey Tutorial Hey Chris, I could tell you had a little Habs bias, what with the number 76 you wear on your jerseys....
I was like who the fuck are the "Habs"? had to google it. i'm not an avid follower of the NHL so forgive my ignorance.
i play for sollihull barons u12 and some of the ice rinks are rubbish
i’m gonna be going into my first year into hockey next year and i’m nervous bruh i barely know the rules and shit anyone got tips or anything..?! lol 😬😬😬
I'm 14 and I'm turning 15 in june next year. Is it too late to start playing ice hockey?
No im fifteen and i have been taking skating lessons for one years and i have learned to go backwards and stop and i will be trying out for hockey very soon
I'm 19 turning 20, I really want to start playing, is it too late for me to get good?
MATTMAD it's never to late I no that's sounds cheesy but it's true
Hey man, I'm 17 and I have no experience in ice hockey. Isit too late to learn?
Not at all.
Im 15 and sorda just randomly have a really strong urge to play hockey. I don't really know how to even skate. I'm gonna start learning and going to the skating rink to try and teach myself. I don't wanna be a professional hockey player, just for fun/exersize. Wish me luck.
Did you start playing?
You use a Sherwood ???
i'm trying it for free and how much time do i need on the ice before game time
This is sooo enticing
which ice rink was that
I am so late for commenting, I wanna get into hockey, played about 5 years ago, now im 16 wanting to start again. I think im gonna go for it, wish me luck. Im gonna be like Bambi on thin ice
hows it gone
are you on a hockey tem
I’ve never played hockey in my life but I’ve always wanted to just anyone have tips for me because I suck right now
Keep at it if you enjoy it. I'm 38 and I only started playing goalie on skates 4 years ago. I was (and still am, to be honest) absolutely terrible compared to others, but I just keep going because I have so much fun with it! Just make sure to stretch out really well before playing, and do a proper warm-down.
Go Phantoms!!
The only thing I still can't do is tight turns so I have improved
Jake Harry Take time and practice, keep at it and you will get there.
@drmom9909 you may need to get your skates sharpened :)
I don't know how to skate backwards now, I could have played hockey with you one-on-one as a child.
Do not go to Whitley Bay ice rink, ive played there
I can skate but not this good can I still play at 15 I just want to play for the lowest team
I wish I was 15... I'm 24 and learning just now.
26 and learning. UH OH !
Better starting late then never at least ?
