I heard at least 6 months ago the 200-500 would be F4.0 with internal zoom and built in TC and weigh less than 6 lbs or 2.7 kg Try $13,000! Canadian $ will be crazy No release date that anyone was talking about
A little late on this discussion, but it wouldn’t surprise me if the “surprise” is that this lens would be an external zoom lens like the RF 100-500. Canon has stated that weight and size is an issue they’re working on, but we haven’t seen many new lenses with this design philosophy. It would also be much more affordable, hopefully.
As an owner of an EF200-400 (f4)with 1.4 converter built in this lense is not surprising at all. Than sense was a mainstay of F1 photographers for a long time.
That is right, no surprise. But, it would be a surprise if it comes with a 1.6 extender built in. Imagine a 800 f/6.4 at the long end. That would be the ultimate wildlife high quality lens.
Sounds like a very exciting dream lens and maybe now makes more sense when paired with the R1 why they made it 24 megapixels! 😊 But I don’t think it will cost much less than $13,000 in my humble opinion. I bought the RF 400mm f2.8 with the hopes of that variable TC coming out soon for zoom capabilities. Just hope that it’s just as sharp as the fixed TC’s 🙏
I am looking at three RF lenses. RF 100-500mm $2695, RF 24-105mm f/2.8 $2999, I own the RF 100-400mm F/5.6-8 & the RF 24-105mm F/4-7.1. Also looking at the 15-35mm. Any Suggestions? More of a landscape and macro guy. An email to You but I do not if it was completed. Internet problems in my area. Cheers!
With the TC built in, I'd guess it would be $12000. If its a zoom TC, then I'd guess $15k (prices in USD). I'd love to have it. I'd love to have the EF 200-400, but even used those are still $5k. Maybe they will come down after this is released!
Hi Simon I think the RF 200-500 F/4 will cost somewhere in the €17,000 range in Europe. I sold my Canon R3 this week and am now waiting to see what Canon will do in the coming weeks/months. I expect more news from Canon to come sometime in November. I'm going to try to test out the OM-1 MK II with the 150-400 mm lens. If Canon tries to plunder my bank account, I will switch to the OM camera system. I see astonishingly good results from this. The Om system is much lighter in weight, and also considerably cheaper to purchase.
Ah 200-500mm, I was thinking about the title and like... Man they haven't deliver my 200-800mm since December and there's already a new 200-800 wtf?? 😂
The Canon RF 600 f/4 costs $13,000 and weighs a TON. This lens is essentially that lens, but with zoom and PERHAPS a teleconverter. Figuring in reality and the effects of inflation . . . this vaporware lens will weigh TWO TONS and cost northward of $16,000. Maybe $17,000 with teleconverter?
I would rather have a 600mm f/6.3ish prime in the $5-6k price range. I know why Canon won't make one, because they couldn't sell as many 600mm f/4s for $13k anymore.
Im waiting for variable tc. I often use my RF 400mm with tc 2x and it works great if You are not hoping to have too much extra reach, rather to have bigger subject in the frame. The down side is that sonetimes You need less than 800mm and the variable focal would be great. It would look like a super telezoom. Moreover the construction of variable tc with RF 100500mm would give You the possibility of using full focal range. On the other hand dont expect that the sensor from R1 would be great improvent over R3. With R3 higher ISO still gives more noise.
The R5 mark ii is nearly a perfect wildlife camera. High megapixel, high fps with stack sensor and pro capture. The only thing it lacks is a light weight and high quality lens like Nikon 400 4.5, or 500 f5.6 or even 600 6.3 it would be a dream lightweight setup. Nikon all they need is to make pre capture in Raw to match probably can’t do it with the current models but probably Z8 mark ii or z9 mark ii
I’ve been hearing about this lens for a while and I the specs are true and it has a built in “zoom” TC then this would be the grail lens for me. That gives me everything I would need as a wildlife photographer…..everything!
I think a better “affordable” version would be 100-500 f5.6 and even then price will increase by at least $2000 more. Keeping 100mm is necessary for versatility at 200mm means extra lens is needed at times.
Hi Simon, I'm kinda expecting a different surprise. Earlier CR stated it would not contain a built-in 1.4x, and instead there would be a separate 1/1.4/2.0 convertor (which could prove handy for other glass as well). When those earlier things remain, I don't believe they've included a triple extender .. but how about they include a 2.0x (instead of the 1.4x for the EF version), which would remain compatible with that new triple extender ??? I bet you'd want to peak at the moon at 2000/f16 ;-) Yesterday I was hiking mainly with the 100-500. But then I spotted a distant redstart, so swapped to the 280-1120 .. but the bird was gone. So I snapped a firefly 4.5m away and was pleasantly surprised 1120/f16 was still rendering nice bokeh !
A built in teleconverter would provide many benefits for those that would want to use one. It's always there when needed and a switch away. I;ve grown to dislike them most of the time due to the loss in sharpness, but in some situations, it provides amazing results. Some speculation here, light on details so maybe the surprise will be a good one.
@@OrdinaryFilmmaker A separate variable 1/1.4/2.0 convertor would have the same benefits as a build in extender .. albeit it can be combined with multiple lenses. And it might even support the full working range of our 100-500 ! In any case, the 200-500 will be something for Jan Wegener, and for Duade if he can afford it. For me it will remain the ultimate dream I'm afraid .. The way the CR article was written, surprise sounded like an unexpected positive thing. but when it includes some internal TC .. it's price may easily approach 20k$ because this lens approaches the big white IQ but offers plenty more flexibility. A big question will be it's weight ..
In my experience the 1.4x on the 100-500 has VERY minimal affect on sharpness. The 2x...that's another story. BTW, My MZ 150-400 f/4.5 (Gandalf the Great White Wizard) has a switchable TC built in and I love it.
How about a simple RF 500mm f4 prime?? Don't want the zoom or the extra thousands on the price for it👎. The EF 500 was about $9K. Adding a zoom and a TC is going to put it at double your estimate! $7K??
A bit off topic ... My B&H order for the R5 II is now showing In Progress. My Payboo card has been charged. Your affiliate link orders should start rolling in today. I'm psyched. Can't wait for my camera. It's been a long month without my sold R5. Have a great day!

Hi! It seems like a good lens and an innovative system, if it turns out to be correct. However I think Canon keeps focusing on the high end gear… I was hoping this wasn’t true, but now I’m starting to change my mind. Pretty sure they have their reasons and they are running a business, but I wonder if they aren’t forgetting the amateur and enthusiast customer base… make affordable mid range lenses like the 200-800, but, like you said, in supply, without making people wait months for them… Anyway, it’s about time they started dedicating a little more to the wildlife shooters and, if the new teleconverters overcome the normal loss of sharpness, then we could have a real game changing system, where people wouldn’t actually need more mp for cropping but could just get closer and fill the frame! All best
A while back you were commenting on the best cards to use. I think they were Angelbird. What cards would you recommend for the R5 MKii? Thanks, so much.
Canon's EF lenses used to be lower priced than Nikon DSLR lens. These days Nikon mirrorless lenses are priced lower than Canon's RF lenses. Canon can go eff themselves with this lens.
Canon needs to approve Tamron 100-500mm F5.6-6.7 to catch the beginners and also an overall zoom like Sigma 24-70mm F2.8 IS. But Canon will never do this as their R&D team and management are always strange. The RF 200-800mm could be great if the zoom ring is small to reach from 200 to 800mm and if it has a removable collar. a small change could made it great and unbeatable. Sony 200-600mm brings so many users toward them and Nikon 180-600mm will bring more users toward Nikon. But does RF200-800mm will attract Sony users? Answer- No. The small change could make the lens the greatest ever.
The only way it will surprise me is if they make it a 200-600mm. I am not surprised by the price. Canon always charges the maximum possible for every lens. Luckily I am still using my SL1 and don't need an RF lens. I'm in Canada so I won't need to spend $CDN12,998 to get this lens!
