    Sorry dude, but the guy at "Edesaikon" misled you. Pastitsio is never combined with rice or potatoes or anything like that. It is a meal of its own with enough carbohydrate from the pasta (thick macaroni) and bechamel sauce (butter and flour and milk) A greek salad or green salad would be enough.

    Studied and lived in Thessaloniki for about 10 years. Edessaikon (the place where you had the pastitsio) fed me for most of those 10 years. Amazing place, notoriously grumpy owner but the food was both cheap and of great quality. Thanks for the video, it sure brought me back.
    Edit: Edessaikon isn't really a restaurant. It's an eatery, a cookery, intended for workers & students to have a home cooked meal during their lunch-break instead of a snack. Hence the low price and relatively simple portion.

    "Edesaikon" is under my house. Im literaly living 3 floors up from where you were standing. The guys in the comments that say Pastitsio is not combined with "this and that" are correct, but keep in mind, the neihborhood is very close the university and is packed with students that want cheap food, as tasty as possible, in LARGE quantities. So the guys at Edesaikon might have 6-7 main course choices and 4-5 garnishes like potatoes/rice etc, and they let you combine that every way you want. So that's what all that was about. Not a usual combination for Greek cousine for sure.
    PS: the current prices for gyro are generaly ridiculous (3.50-3.80), when it used to be like 2euro, 5-6 years ago, but this guy at "Asterix" charging you 4.10 (or 4.50, im not sure) blew my mind. I guess im never having any food from that place, ever.

    • @BoogieBubble
      @BoogieBubble Год назад +9

      @ Perseus Arkouda Really dude? Crete has more variety that the whole of north Greece combined. You should actually travel a bit outside of your "precious" city and see that everywhere they have amazing food and it is well known that the south of Greece has a lighter and more tasty cuisine than the north with its limitation of raw materials. Trust me it is my job. I cook greek food for a living. Also you should actually read a book as well about the history of Crete and see if it was a crossroad of civilizations long before you ever existed. Like jeez , how do you even come up with these stuff?

      But what he is actually saying, is not a comparison of the overall history of the two regions. Thessaloniki was a big city, the second biggest of the Ottoman Empire in Europe, and a mutlicultural city with many ethnicities. Crete on the other hand, and after the Ottoman conquest had not the diversity of Thessaloniki. All of these ethnicities, brought their own food culture to the city.

    Bougatsa with minced meat is kinda common in Thessaloniki but throughout Greece the most common bougatsa is with cream, usually with added sugar and cinnamon. Also as a dairy extra, chocolate milk is quite usual but it would send you traight to toilet. Ariani is a bit healthier alternative but kinda rare.
    Rice with the pastiggio seems weird but it's common in some dishes to add some rice or french fries as a cheap way to increase the size of the dish. Also, pastigio isn't really street food as oyu can't eat it on the street. In fact, you may find it on Sunday table by your grandma. But it is kinda common in taverns that serve food for home. Bread is sometimes free in such places and if you asked for more perhaps you'd get some for free.
    Gyros is usually pork and usually served with tzatziki as the one here. That's a typical gyros. Lettuce is very uncommon in gyros but I have to add that I used to get gyros with lettuce just a few minutes walk from the place of this place. I don't find it in my city though. French fries in the gyros is a rule too. You can get a dish of gyros meat of course but in the sandwich a basic ingredient will be french fries.

      @@perseusarkouda yeah, Northern Greece in general has been a home for Turks, Slavs, Albanians, Aromanians and Greeks at the same time. We were also less influenced by Venice, Genoa and other western powers than the south.
      The south, which is both more ethnically homogeneous and more influenced by Italians and other westerners is the "Mediterranean paradise" that people think of when they hear Greece. You'll find that they're better at making pasta and seafood whereas we in the North are better at middle eastern, asia minor and local Balkan cousine.

I see you've done some other videos too on greek food. I hope you enjoyed/are enjoying your time here. Take care!
    P.S. Regarding the Pastitsio with rice conversation, yes, Pastitsio stands by itself, but that's how they roll in Edessaiko: they give you a "main" (usually some kind of meat, but Pastitsio in this case), and always something on the side (rice, potatoes, etc), plus the bread and water (for which you are not charged, contrary to most places).
