  • The Hawaiian Koa were elite warriors in a land dominated by war. They were grand masters of a martial art called Lua - a way to break every bone in an enemy's body. When Captain Cook lands on Hawaii, the Koa warriors greet him in the worst way.

Kamehameha didn't stand out because of his "darting eyes" he stood out because he was over 7 foot tall and massively strong. The Naha stone resides today in front of Hilo library. Don't think you're moving it either - it is huge!

This documentary is outdated in regards to its understanding and portrayal of the "koa" warriors. First off, the word "koa" by itself can mean brave, not just warrior. In fact, the word "pūʻali" was used more to describe the soldiery, whereas "koa" was just a way to describe anyone brave, hence "pūʻali koa" (brave soldiers) and "pūkaua koa" (brave war leader). The truth is we don't know how the tree got its name, but the word "koa" is a cognate for "toa", which exists in other Polynesian languages like Samoan and Maori.
The word "pūʻali" means to gird, as a loincloth. The "malo" which is the Hawaiian loincloth, was girded before combat and battle, hence the term "pūʻali" to describe its soldiers. In modern days, the term "pūʻali" is used for any kind of soldiery, such as "pūʻali koa" for "Army" as opposed to "pūʻali lewa" for "Air Force."
This is an *okay* attempt at trying to convey the Hawaiian story to a foreign audience, but it misses the mark on accuracy.

Nice to review the earliest days of Captain Cooks’ arrival and subsequent death on the big island, Hawaii.
The Polynesian people along the western Pacific Rims’ islands, all the way down to New Zealand and the Pacific South Sea Islands, for millennia were the largest population of citizens in these areas. Polynesians! They are truly a remarkable people built extremely large and strong, so of course they would have a great warrior class, but they also had their “incredible seafaring skills”that allowed them to travel thousands of miles to islands like the Hawaiian Islands. A beautiful, proud, artistic, premier fishing people. I enjoyed this documentary very much. It shows how the British could be and often were overly pompous, dependent on their technology, and military skills. Also, a proud group of great seafaring people that definitely had one of the greatest Navy’s’ through out Middle Ages until the 20century where many of the First World Nations were creating high functioning Navy’s as well. 👍🥰

We were also feared as powerful prayer "E Molokai Pule O O". We could pray a pua'a (pig) to death and bring the pua'a back to life. That's why we could relate to the teachings of Jesus Christ because some of us used the gifts from the creator to heal, and then we had those who used their gifts to cause harm or hurt others.

This is so inaccurate it sad all this is , is a narrative change and left out the most substantial information I’m sure on purpose!
    1) kauai was never conquered
    2) Kamehameha was backed by who? If he was fighting against the other Hawaiians??
    3) the diseases that were brought to the islands killing 90% of the kanaka in a matter of 3-4 years
    4) the imprisonment of the queen
This is all so current for the kanaka here it’s only 3-4 generations ago!
The westerns tried to change the narrative with Kamehameha schools , Hawaiian home lands and the merry monarch… All to keep the people dumb down and to forget what really happened!
