Misdiagnosed type 2 diabetic: DKA, medically induced coma, and months of recovery. While I was under they finally performed a C pep test and it was 17. Withered down to 89 lbs. Thank you for raising awareness, from a fellow LADA

U.K. LADA experience: Late May 19 I saw my GP for a routine med review. She took my BP which was unusually raised so ordered a blood test which I took a week later. That same evening she phoned me to tell me my blood glucose was 12.3 (A1c 40) and was I having symptoms of thirst/excess urination, history of diabetes in my family which was all a no. She asked me to come in after the weekend for a fasting glucose test which was 7.5 and ketones of 1.8. Had another blood test that day which showed a A1c of 44. A month later I had a blood test for antibodies which came back high titre for GAD at 29. Fortunately I’m still in a position to control with a low carb diet but know it’s only a matter of time that I’ll have to start Glargine/Humalog. This was totally a fluke situation and I still can’t believe how it was diagnosed literally as it started. Someone is watching over me I’m positive of that (Hey Dad x) I saw an adult specialist diabetes nurse on Wednesday who had never treated a LADA patient not on insulin as usually a patient gets sick before it is diagnosed.

Wow. Finally an answer. I'm still only taking Lantus after two years... and yes, it was metformin before that. My HbA1c is rising each time it's tested despite eating better each time and using more lantus. I need to ask my dr about this. I know deep down something isn't right.

Vanessa, I am sorry to hear that your diabetes has been progressively more difficult to manage and I truly hope that it isn't LADA. If it does turn out to be, I hope knowing the real cause will bring some relief and a more proper treatment plan. Thanks for sitting through my rather lengthy diagnosis video. Best of luck at the doctors and I wish you health and happiness.

A LADA Life with Joel me too. But just like you, right now it'd kinda be a welcome explanation for everything. I've been exercising more and eating nearly zero carbs and my glucose is rising. I'll keep you posted. Thanks so much for your candour

Vanessa Castles , my son is a Type 1 diabetic and Lantus has not worked for him. Lantus is not that great of an insulin. My son has had Type 1 for 14 years. He was diagnosed on his 4th Birthday. Anyway, his endocrinologist put him on NPH. NPH is an intermediate acting insulin that is taken twice a day. The NPH works well with the fast acting insulin. My son is doing much better. Check with your doctor about other insulin options.

Aged 47 in 2019 my GP was totally on it straight away. Routine meds review BP was unusually high so she ordered bloods. Random BG was 12.3 & HbA1c 40. 4 days later fasting BG 7.5, ketones 2.8, HbA1c 44. Immediate LADA diagnosis. GAD 29... not super high but positive. My mum has MS which is autoimmune and where I assume I inherited the autoimmune gene from. Do you have autoimmune disease in your family too? I work in pharmacy hospital paediatrics and see patients regularly hospitalised with DKA due to paed T1 rapid onset. I feel we LADA diagnosed had the advantage to be diagnosed with T1 later in life and so had time to get to grips with a T1 diagnosis as an adult whereas these children and their parents have to deal with a shock diagnosis and the sudden life changing results that ensue for all.

Hi there. I'm glad I found your channel. I was diagnosed type 2 in 2012. I was put on Metformin as well as Glimepiride for some time. Fast forward to this past February. My sugars had been decently controlled, but I got sick with what I thought was bronchitis. The doctor at the urgent care put me on prednisone even though I said I was a type two diabetic. Well five days later my sugars are in the 400s - numbers I've never seen before. My husband has been a type one for 24 years and he strongly recommended I find an endocrinologist. Of course his first thought was worst case scenario. I thought, no way. Met with the endocrinologist and considering I am overweight, she took one look at me and assumed I was just a fat lazy type two. She sent me for bloodwork and told me to continue taking the two meds. Three freaking weeks later (this past Friday) the results came back showing I tested positive for anti-bodies from the GAD-65 test. She's calling me 1.5 LADA and has me taking long acting, short acting as well as Metformin still. She wants to test my C-peptide but can't do that until my sugars are under control. I have been sky high for 3 months and I don't feel well at all. In the past two days I'm finally starting to figure out how to treat with the insulin. The endocrinologist had me taking 10 units with each meal, but it wasn't working. I feel like I'm on my own with this because she's expressing an apparent lack of concern at this point. Thank you for sharing your story and showing me that i'm not alone.

I've gone over 4 years since being diagnosed with type 2 and never followed up to see how the meds were working. I am on the maximum dosage of med (cannot use med name on RUclips because they will censor the comment). My pharmacist sent me for 2 blood tests within the past 2 years because I do not have access to a GP in Canada and are on a waiting list. My HbA1C, as well as glucose, was still too high both times. I urinate 20-30 times a day, etc. I'm 44 now but I had health problems from diabetes starting at age 30, severe foot pain, thrush for many years, blurred vision, weight gain in just the stomach and chest, etc. My doctor at the time told me that they didn't know what was causing these problems, even claimed they didn't know what caused the thrush. Now I know better and it upsets me that they made me suffer like this for all those years!!! What kind of doctor doesn't know that?! Apparently a had a blood test from another doctor back when I was in my early 20s that had a high HbA1C and glucose but I never got the news. Long story short, I just saw another doctor 3 weeks ago and she told me she thinks it's adult type 1 and is sending me to see a Endo. Until 3 weeks ago I never even knew adult type 1 even freak'n existed!!! Even her nurse told me before I saw the doc that it was impossible for me to even have all those health problems at such a young age because it would take a few years of being diabetic before they would have started. And no, I am not obese either and I don't eat light a pig. It's rare I eat 3 meals a day. So now another med has been added to the one I am already taking until I see an Endo. I am just worried that the Endo will not be good or rush me through the appointment and I will not be properly checked. Because nothing to date, even the meds, are keeping the HbA1C and glucose balanced. One minute it's too high, too low or normal. It's all out of whack now with this extra med. I also have an autoimmune disease and heard that there is a connection to adult type 1 and autoimmune diseases.
Thanks dude for sharing your story. More people need to know about this form of diabetes. Glad to hear that at least you have a proper diagnoses and you can move forward with your life.

Wow, wow, wow, you and I have nearly the exact same story. I was able to limp my pancreas along for four years instead of two, though. However, I was diagnosed with only slightly elevated blood sugars, so I think I was just caught very early in the process. Too bad it made no difference. I should be going on a pump soon also. Hope it prevents complications. : )

Hi Joel new subbie!!! My son is type one since 2008 now he is 16. I did the Trial net and I tested positive for 3 antibodies.. in 2015. I did not continue with the study.. now my aiC went from 5.3 to 5.6 which isn't bad 2015-2107 .. I retested to see if I still qualify for testing.

    • @aladalife
      @aladalife  7 лет назад

      Keisha, thanks for subbing. :)
It's nice to see other people that have been involved in Trail Net. From what I've heard through Trial Net, based on their stages of T1D progression, if you test positive for at least 2 of the antibodies then a T1D diagnosis is inevitable so having 3 seems even more emphatic. Fortunately it sounds like your A1C is still in the normal range so hopefully you can stave it off as long as possible. I hope your son is doing well, I've heard that teenage years can be tough.
Thanks for watching my Trial Net experience. Take Care!

Sounds like your diagnosis was as frustrating as mine. I went to my regular doctor for 14 years and she always treated me as a type 2 even though she had me taking Metformin, Lantus, and Humalog. I was 26 when I was diagnosed. The Metformin worked for 2 years and then I had to go on both types of insulin. She would complain that my numbers were not in control and I felt like I was doing what I could to keep them in range. I finally got upset after 14 years and went to an endocrinologist and she did the test for LADA and it was confirmed that I was LADA. She took me off Metformin and just kept me on the insulin. My regular doctor had always told me I couldn't eat fruit and couldn't eat all this stuff. Now I know I can eat those type of things but I just need to cover it with my insulin. My advice to anyone that is diagnosed and they don't really feel like things are going the way they should with their regular doctor is to seek treatment from an endocrinologist. My endocrinologist also introduced me to the cgm and I don't think I would want to be without it now. Thanks for sharing your story with us.

For me, I'm bit skinny but in shape. 180cm & 68kg. I do exercise at GYM since long time. However, I had very hard time in my work and felt so bad & overthinking of getting fired and then later I started showing symptoms so I went to check myself. each doctor visit just gets surprised that I have diabetic symptoms they ran many tests all were positive unfortunately. I was diagnosed with type2 in almost 2015. I remember my blood sugar at the time was 300. so the doctor gave glocphage 500 twice a day. then later gave me glogphage 750xr with amaryel. later he stopped the amareyl coz the sugar was under control and started losing more weight till I became 58kg which horrible!!. and later start feeling bad in my feet like burning sometimes and doctor have only told me to use b12 and there was no any other solution. YOU KNOW WHAT. all these days I really had no idea what are the carbs what it does. no one helped me out in the hospital they just saying u can eat anything but don't eat too much rice or white bread that's all. later I had to educate myself through the internet then youtube which is better to listen to people experiences. my A1C didn't reach 8 ever, just once in 2016 then I learned more about low carbs and kept it around 7 and less. All previous doctors didn't want to run a c-peptide test so I was uncomfortable.
until one last doctor he ran it and the result was 0.877 which is low. and he told to start insulin long acting Tresiba 10units daily.
My general health got improved a little and I gained some like 5kg. but the burning is still and even with perfect daily routine that didn't help as well. I'm nowadays thinking to try KETO diet. using more fat instead of carbs, or just to start rabid insulin i don't know.
I just wanna get rid of this burning feeling in my left foot.

120 gram carbs will definitely distroy our body. It is easy to limit carbs 20 to 50 grams a day. Follow keto receipes on youtube, if you are not good with keto then follow WHOLE FOOD PLANT BASED DIET.
