Oddly enough this whole phenomenon reminds me of classical music composers who named their works stuff like “Symphony No. 5 in Eb”… it _is_ accurate to what the work is, but from a marketing standpoint, terrible for giving anyone any emotional connection. The Xenoblade games aren’t nearly as bad, since “Xenoblade” has a strong enough connotation for most people, and there are visual elements of the games that are iconically tied to the title… but all in all, yes totally agree. Even a small subtitle (maybe there’s a better, less confusing word than subtitle, since that gets confused with in-game subtitles???) Could be super cool. Future Connected and Torna The Golden Country are awesome names.

A fitting subtitle for X would be "Core of the World". I think this would reflect its more exploration-based focus while also complementing the theme of the story. FF7's narrative is more anti-fascist than anti-capitalist. A Xenoblade subtitle that's over 4 words seems like it'd be pushing it in terms of being mouthful, you just gotta make it catchy!

    • @theEndermanMGS
      @theEndermanMGS 3 года назад +9

I wouldn’t say FFVII really tackles fascism. Fascism is largely defined by its national chauvinism and romanticization of a largely fictional golden age of the nation, which are largely absent from VII. Wutai is the only examination of nationalism I remember in VII, but nationalism of the anti-imperialist national liberation variant rather than fascism’s national chauvinism. The roles of the state and corporations is also in reverse in VII: under fascism, corporations serve the state; in VII, the state is controlled by a corporation. So rather than being specifically anti-fascist, I would call VII more broadly anti-authoritarian.
The anti-capitalist themes, however, are definitely there. VII takes place in a world where a megacorporation has taken control of government and is draining the planet of its life for profit, all while much of the population lives in poverty caused in large part by the actions of said megacorporation. That’s definitely a critique of capitalism, not dissimilar to the critiques of capitalism seen in cyberpunk, which VII shares a lot with. It’s not a particularly radical critique, with nearly everybody being critical of corporate influence over government, but still a critique. I do think the environmental themes make VII’s critique a little more radical than other similar critiques of capitalism, but VII only really addresses the current problems without pointing to any particular solutions, and I could very well be reading my own anti-capitalist views into the game.

“Where We Used to Be” is literally perfect for Xenoblade 2, a game taking place in the original world that Xenoblade was separated from. “End of the World” really makes no sense at all because the game ends similarly to the first one, with the beginning of a new world.

I really don't think that End of the World is a good subtitle for 2, yeah it has the counterpart-to-1 thing based on your idea of that being Beginning of the World, but seriously think about how confusing that would have been in 2017 for newcomers when we didn't even know about the dlc or anything. Also, thematically, I just don't think it fits all that well. It does make it sound like the same type of story as 1 when they are wildly different in many respects

Ubisoft did a study and found that 90% of players leave subtitles on if they're on by default. So I personally think every game should have those on by default, or ask before the game starts.
But this video is actually about subtitles like Future Connected, The Golden Country, and so on. I usually like those too. I don't know if we need them yet, but if we start really getting into this third version of Perfect Works, then yeah, we might need them soon.

If I follow your idea of keep the second part of "Monado : Beginning of the World" and the word "world", I would call the trilogy :
Xenoblade : Beginning of the World
Xenoblade X : World of Mira yes it's just the planet (aka world) name, but I think it's fit well for Sci-Fi
Xenoblade 2 : A World Ending the "a" is important for both the parallel universe and "world" in the sense of era aspects, and it's also reverse the wording.
But if we keep the "Monado" part, it will be :
    Xenoblade : Monado
Xenoblade X : Mira's Lifehold again the name of the planet and the main aspect of the story (and also a little hint about the ending)
Xenoblade 2 : The Grail of Elysium both the fact Elysium is the main objective and will save the world, and a reference to the Aegis (Holy Grail in japanese)

On the subject of calling it _Monado_ instead of _Xenoblade,_ it wouldn't work. The only reference to the Monado in _X_ is Lin's hair decorations, and in _2,_ you don't wield the Monado. Shulk as a Blade doesn't count. Meanwhile, _Xenoblade_ can refer to things found in each game: the Monado in the first game, the organization BLADE in _X_ (not to mention one other thing...), and the Aegis, being a powerful Blade, the...uh...power-up partners, I guess you could say, in _2._

I personally don't want Xenoblade to have subtitles because it makes the game more mysterious in it's content. It lets certain elements of the story remain hidden until you get to that point in the story. If XC1 had 'Beginning of the World' as a subtitle I'd be expecting certain elements that happen in the game that I wouldn't have expected without the subtitle. Now, I'm not bashing subtitles in general (I'm eagerly awaiting BotW 2's), but for Xenoblade with it's deep stories, I'd rather go in without any expectations for it's story.
Edit: I also personally like the full title of 'Xenoblade Chronicles'. It makes it sound more grand to me even if just 'Xenoblade' is more convenient and easier to say/type.

How about Xenoblade X: so nah, so fern? This would reference multiple things. For one it would be a callback to the old days of the Xeno series with its German subtitles and it would also reference a pretty popolar ost from that game, which also happens to be the main theme of one of the most important characters in the story and the title kinda fits the story too. So nah so fern (=so close, so distant) could be about the human race itself and its existance on mira. Since while the rest of humanity is so close on mira, yet the earth and by that the origin of humanity is so distant.

I'm a big fan of subtitles if not for the sole purpose of getting sick names like "Xenoblade: Beginning of the World" or "MGSV: The Phantom Pain". As long as we're not hitting "Mario & Sonic at the Sochi 2014 Olympic Winter Games" levels of clutter, I'd honestly be on board.
I also remember with Mega Man, everyone was holding onto the dream that Mega Man 9 would connect into Mega Man X somehow... Mega Man 10 laughed at this notion.

I could see XCX having "Center Of The World" as a subtitle. The emphasis on humanity being not only the casulty of the Ganglion/Ghost battle but also being the distant relatives of the Samaarians, ultimate failsafe against the Ganglions & implied "Gods" of the Zarubaggons really makes it feel like humans are the actual center of X's world as a whole.
Mira being the one thing unifying all these different Xeno races together in one place makes me think it would work too.
Then there's the fact that the whole game is about finding the Lifehold Core which is the center of everyone's world in BLADE, metaphorically speaking.

Sort of leaning on FFXIV styled Subtilte names.
    Why not Xenoblade X: Star-bound?
It gets the surface idea of "Oh Hey, this is a Sci-Fi story with space travel as a setup" across well.
It also has subtext implications if you break it into two words, Star and Bound.
Star can refer to planet, but also the star-like effect that occured when Earth was destroyed, but also implies that Earth/Our Solar system isn't the only "Star" that has experienced tragedy in the story.
Bound gives the general idea of travel and harks on "Wayward-bound", implying the travel to Mira and Adventure/Open World elements. It also can act as subtile foreshadowing to the fact that the humans in X are effectively bound to Mira now due to SPOILERS,.

To continue this to 3, the subtitle could either be "The Eternal World" or "The World Eternal" which also makes it fit in a cool way as a trilogy. (I've had this idea since the trailers, I got it from the name "Aionios" and the party using the Oroborus symbol, in the context of the story it only got more fitting.)
I saw a comment on some video that said that each game is also about either the past present or future, which gave me an interesting idea for an alternative set of subtitles. (spoiler warning)
"Xenoblade: Eyes to the Future" because seeing the future is a major thing and because of Egiel being driven by fear of a future event, "Xenoblade 2: Chains of the Past" because a lot of the cast is motivated by trauma from the past, and "Xenoblade 3: Forever in the Present" because of the "endless now" and forces keeping it in place. I don't know what you would do for X in this though, it could be different because it's a spinoff.

  • @33link333
    @33link333 3 года назад +3

That's gonna be a big disagree from me on this one, I also strongly disagree with your statement that Final Fantasy should have subtitles but that is not the point of this comment.
For one thing, they are already three games in with using 'Chronicles', and if you were to have subtitles then that would be way too much name clutter if that was also there, and even outside of that I don't think any of the suggestions are that good. Starting with the first game, 'Beginning of the World' gives away way too much in my opinion and removes a large part of the mystique of the world.
And going on to 2, 'End of the World' is an even worse title then the one for one is, for one it makes the games seem WAY more connected then they are. Aside from that you also need to remember that the name should NOT be in context of both 2 and Torna, it should ONLY in context of base 2, as that would be everything people would have for context. And lastly, it just doesn't fit the game at all, that title only makes sense in context of 1 which is not what you want when the games aren't direct sequels.
And then giving X a subtitles that also brings to mind the other two would be an even bigger mistake in my book sine that game doesn't even have the ending connection that 1 and 2 does, further adding to the confusion of continuity.
The reason the Saga subtitles work so well is because 1) they have had them since the first game and the clear theme only works because the games are direct sequels to one another and 2) they don't really give much of anything away, they help set a tone without compromising the mystery.
TLDR: As is now it would only add to the confusion of continuity between the games for newcomers and might also give too much away about the story and world.
Sorry if this ended up kind of rambly, I wrote this while tired just before going bed. And of course this is all opinion so if you disagree that's fine, just don't be an ass about it.

I never thought I needed a Xenoblade 3-9 until now, but if that's what it takes to get X ported to something modern, so be it.

I suppose you could make Xenoblade 2 "End of _a_ World". Ties it to the first game without directly implying that it's the same world.

I think 1 should be something in the style of "a tale of a blond man", that seems to be shulk at the beginning but you understand it actually talk about zanza too once you advance the story.
I think it could be cool and sounds better than "beginning of the world" imo, and also less spoilers

Actually, if I would change anything about the title, it would be to actually give Xenoblade 1 its 1. Then the numbers could refer to the amount of cores from the Trinity Processor in the game, assuming Pyra and Mythra no longer share the same core after their reawakening.

While I couldn't think of a clever subtitle for Xenoblade X whilst considering how the game's Japanese title is pronounced as *"Xenoblade Cross"* - best I got was *"Earth-Torn Refugees"* and *"New World Pioneers"* - I personally think a better subtitle for Xenoblade 2 would be something along the lines of *"In Search for Elysium"* partially to clarify that Xenoblades 1 & 2 are indeed seperate universes (something that *"Beginning of the World"* and *"End of the World"* may muddy a little) but also because of how XC2's narrative kinda challenges what Alrest's version of Elysium could possibly be on both a geographic and spiritual level

2 should definitely be "Torna the Fallen/Lost Empire/Country/World" to tie it to "Torna the Golden Country".
Very obviously tying it to Xenoblade 1 would be a huge spoiler and a mistake.
X should be "Survivors Of the World's End", "Lost Children" or "Legacy of Man/The Gods"

I think we could still use one of the song names as a subtitle for 2, maybe "Xenoblade: Elysium of the blue sky" would be a fitting name because the whole game revolves around getting Pyra to Elysium

The Final Fantasy thing gets even worse because many of the games have sequels, so they just throw in a whole different naming convention. You've got Final Fantasy X and its sequel Final Fantasy X-2, and you've got kinda the same thing with Final Fantasy XIII and Final Fantasy XIII-2, but then the third one isn't called Final Fantasy XIII-3, I think it's called Lightning Returns: Final Fantasy XIII? The sequel to IV is called IV: The After Years, and later IV: Interlude was released, I think as part of a bundle, to connect the two. The various parts of Compilation of Final Fantasy VII (which is a terrible name for that series btw lmao) have very nice subtitles, but they tell you virtually nothing about when they take place relative to each other, save for Before Crisis taking place before Crisis Core (I think?). Plus you've got some Final Fantasy spinoff games being titled something other than Final Fantasy in some regions, and then games not originally intended as Final Fantasy games getting titled as such in some regions, and the name of one game in one region being the same as a different game in another region.

Here are my ideas for subtitles. Just to be clear, I also think it looks silly to have this many Tildes across the titles, but I really liked having the Xeno Blade in the subtitle and wanted to separate it from the sub-subtitle.
Xenoblade Chronicles: Monado ~ Beginning of the World
Xenoblade Chronicles 2: Aegis ~ End of the World
Xenoblade 3: (Important Object) ~ A New World
Xenoblade Chronicles X: Lifehold ~ Another World
Xenoblade Chronicles: Bionis Shoulder ~ Future Connected
Xenoblade Chronicles 2: Torna ~ The Golden Country
Naming the games like this can give you a better idea of what each game is about, but it also means you can refer to the games with as little as the important object from that game. FC could alternatively be titled "Fog King ~ Future Connected" and Torna could be changed to "Malos ~ History Connected" to keep in line with this naming scheme as well as let them better parallel each other.

if the next game is called xenoblade chronicles 3 what colour will the 3 be this time i wonder, seen a lot of mock ups which use purple, but i think green

I’m not sure about green considering how important it is to 2’s story especially later on or even purple for that matter considering malos is purple

I think the ambiguity of the titles works for me. Xenoblade Chronicles X is a bit out there though, I admit I was a little confused when that was announced.

  • @ikaru886

Why not use the word "planet" for X? It has all the advantages of "world" but also give a space opera vibe
I know it's kinda memey but "stuck on a different planet" or "something about this planet" could potentially work (with some refinement of course)
EDIT : Also, I don't know if it was a real question but the Xenoblade numeration does make a lot of sens when you think about developers intent and story structure
