The way you do these little hacks like what you did by attaching the camera to the penguin is such a clever and cool way to look at game development techniques! Loving this series.
developers: we need a sound effect for the pinguïn, any idea's? Colleague: well..... perhaps..... my car's locking alarm? everyone: THATS A GREAT IDEA! The pinguïn in the game: 4:20
This is actually far more fascinating than I thought it would be. I expected it to just be a case of "penguin hits the death barrier and gets destroyed, game recognizes incorrect number of penguins and respawns the missing one to prevent a star softlock" but not only is Super Mario 64 perfectly fine with star softlocks, even if that were the case that would mean the penguin could get lost literally anywhere else and if you forget where it is you're out of luck anyways. The explanation being a simple rendering optimization makes a lot more sense and taught me something I didn't know about the game's object rendering. Nice job, very informative video!
nah, i think the little penguin simply vanishes to nothingness and suffers in the void while the universe spawns another penguin meant to replace the original one
It's really dope to see the tricks and techniques game developers use in their games. I've been curious at times of what goes on out of camera view in some games. It's cool to see you make videos and figure out how the developers make magic happen. Dope channel 💯👍
That was quite fascinating to know. I just recently made a stop-motion video that recreates Mario dropping the penguin in LEGO form. Though that is based on how some players do this after bringing the penguin back to her mom.
It’s amazing learning the game mechanics from years ago, even if it’s just from something silly like dropping a penguin which everybody has done. Nice video.
So, for piece of mind, the little penguin doesn't die, it simply temporarily disppears to a timeless void until called upon again at Mario's whim. Very much better. 😑😓🤐
Could you please do a video of Mario killing the Mystery Goomba in the 3. Bowser level? With the Death Barrier deactivated, Mario can finaly beat that elusive bugger.
That's 90s kids for you. In goldeneye 64 I would go around killing as many random civilians as I could in the street level for no apprent reason( despite the fact the mission is clearly to not kill them lol)
I loved this video so much!! I learnt a lot of things about this game that I had no clue were a thing in the games mechanics. I love the unique things and perspectives you bring to Boundary Breaking in games.
"It just has an alpha channel to make it invisible" this isn't correct. Programmed boundaries don't need textures or alpha channels, they're just coordinates. It doesn't use an alpha channel at all.
Is anyone else able to confirm this wasn't a dream? I have a memory where I had grabbed the penguin and the mother had pushed Mario towards the direction of the cliff, I decided to throw the penguin off the cliff for lulz but when I did, the mother took a few steps to the ledge and jumped off after the baby in a scripted event. I have no ideas if this is possible or if it just a dream that I'm remembering as actually have happened but I remember thinking at the time "oh damn, that can happen?". Did anyone else experience this or was it just a false memory?
So all this time after years of people abusing poor little penguin by throwing it to its death, Nintendo actually programmed it so that the little penguin remains unharmed. It’s like they knew.
This is cool, but you didn't drop the penguin out of bounds. You dropped it onto the death barrier. Out of bounds is defined as anywhere that doesn't have a floor under it. It's what you bonked against at 2:44. Getting Mario into out of bounds is difficult, but possible. This kills Mario and visually removes his hat. I would guess that the penguin could still fall out of bounds.
Oh, sing with me, sing for the year Sing for the laughter, and sing for the tear Sing it with me, if it's just for today Maybe tomorrow, the good Lord will take you away
After many sleepless nights, my imagination now has a reason to chill out and stop imagining the penguin in an everlasting abyss where he falls forever.

Maybe let’s get some quake content from your channels since it’s all been re released
after learning about in game camera hack. i have much more respect & appreciation for out of bound videos. stuff is time consuming to do

Yes!!! I hope to see more content, as I just recently got into these types of videos. I love this stuff!
So I didn't kill him back then?
I mean, what a relieve, I didn't kill him!
Thank you!😄😄😄 I did throw little penguin over the edge multiple times as a kid
What happens when you throw lil penguin down the chimney? My friend and I found he didn't respawn that way.
Very interesting. It isn't actually as cruel as we thought lol.
That just leaves the yoshi fail safe murder from SMW😂

I never played the game but im happy that the little penguin is okay 😅🤣
Yeah! Lil Penguin been dropped that many times it's second nature now.
nah, i think the little penguin simply vanishes to nothingness and suffers in the void while the universe spawns another penguin meant to replace the original one
Once the penguin would give up the star I usually would throw the baby penguin off the edge then proceed to collect the star
saved so many people's conscience with this video
Glad I could help with your conscience!
Fun fact: At 0:44 look at the Mario's cap. You can see an easter egg, letters are creating a word S L I P P Y.
wow
Most impressive!

I feel better now knowing that the little penguin is ok.
This is a cool, cool video.
No penguins were hurt during production on this video
they get to make a cameo in the movie
Funny how this is the only level where you are the bad guy
ngl the slowed mario scream at 1:50 made me laugh out loud i was so caught off guard
Let's be honest. We have all thrown the penguin for fun
He returned in the Movie
I had to heal after watching an animation. Thank you. Penguin baby is safe.

Penguin🐧: Do you yield?
Dude I cant wait for Jack black bowser to drop each penguin off a ledge in the movie
So it turns out the Penguin safely teleports back to it's place of origin?
Cool! Now our dirty consciences can rest much easier xD
It’s amazing learning the game mechanics from years ago, even if it’s just from something silly like dropping a penguin which everybody has done. Nice video.
I am sure some people have never dropped little penguin off the cliff lol.
I love how you made an entire video about a topic like this lol good stuff.
Basically mario is saying: *You only exist because I let you*
Why does trees look so fake, when you are above them they turn diretctly on you even tho they are not attached to ground It is wierd..
Billboarded assets always look out of place
So, for piece of mind, the little penguin doesn't die, it simply temporarily disppears to a timeless void until called upon again at Mario's whim. Very much better. 😑😓🤐
Do you yield
So we didn’t actually kill any baby penguins? Whew 😅
Well that’s disappointing.
Oh, this was great to get and fun to learn somethings.

One of my favorite levels ever in a Mario game.
The more you know
Could you please do a video of Mario killing the Mystery Goomba in the 3. Bowser level? With the Death Barrier deactivated, Mario can finaly beat that elusive bugger.
Incredibly that's exactly the video I'm talking about/making. You nailed it!
this is interesting. Also, this out of map stuff still creeps me out
Me too! That's why I like it.
Out of map really creeps me out too. I wonder what would happen if I fall on it
The fact that almost everyone that played Mario 64 naturally did this without anyone telling us…
Not here to judge lmao Gr8 vid. Nice S.L.I.P.P.Y easter egg 2. 😉
that car key sound effect though
Wait...so there's no reason to restart...
Nope, although it's probably quicker.
That's not really what happens: he falls for eternity and slowly starves to death.
Us penguins are too powerful to be killed >:D
I don't understand why people are cruel enough to throw the poor penguin off the cliff, but it was fun to learn the science behind why he respawns.
That's 90s kids for you. In goldeneye 64 I would go around killing as many random civilians as I could in the street level for no apprent reason( despite the fact the mission is clearly to not kill them lol)
I feel better knowing that I didn't kill little penguin over and over
Truth be told: wee penguin cheated death
0:45 mario's hat spells out slippy :o
Been wondering this since I was a kid
first you were calling it death platform, then you changed it to death barrier
Super cool!
One More Mario 64! 🤩
Very interesting 🤨
STOP MURDERING LIL BABY PENGY!!! ToT

if you angle right you don't have to drop the penguin
You have to at least throw the penguin off the cliff once in your life.
I actually thought that's how you get the star
I wouldn't blame you
Is anyone else able to confirm this wasn't a dream?
I have a memory where I had grabbed the penguin and the mother had pushed Mario towards the direction of the cliff, I decided to throw the penguin off the cliff for lulz but when I did, the mother took a few steps to the ledge and jumped off after the baby in a scripted event.

Thanks for ruining my childhood. All this time I thought i was getting rid of the bugger but nope🤬🤬🤬
we all killed that penguin in our childhoods. some horror movie demon of gaming will seeks its revenge
Please keep making these videos they are very nice 👍🏽
I love penguins they are adorable..and this? Heartaching yet kinda funny
I seriously thought, ITS still falling. Not even joking😮
So he doesn’t really just die, thank god, I’m not a psychopath 😫
98% of people that dropped the penguin off the cliff did it on porpoise. I dropped the penguin down the chimney too lol
Mario is a demon because he doesn't want the penguin 😂😂😂😂😂😂
0:15 this is the same thing as throwing yoshi off the cliff
we're sorry but not sorry
Years feeling myself so guilty 😌 Now I can rest
nintendo probably program this as a fail safe.
the penguin's is more powerfull than we tought..
So the moral of the story is the baby penguin is immortal
Nice job you made a 30 second answer into a 5 minute video
Wait, you mean it's not normal to yeet it after spawning the star?
I feel like war crimes are the norm with Mario 64 at this point
2:07 what is that small purple rectangle on the death floor?
My grandad told my little brother off for doing this 😂
Ok, can we save an A Press if we utilize this? :D
I don't think I've ever seen it in THIS high quality, almost like it was upscaled.

When Nintendo steals your childhood evil fantasies by just making the penguin re-appear at the top.
Penguin disapear got me 💀💀
So, Mario has been chucking penguins off ledges since 1996, but they'll just bounce off the bottom, and teleport back to the start.
maybe this makes it happy enough
Who else here feeling bad for dropping the penguin
