My family lived through this tornado and lost everything. Their homes were completely gone and they lost almost every possession. Luckily no one in my family died although I had an uncle who was flung by the tornado and broke his hip. Almost was a lot worse though as the high school graduation had occurred hours before this beast hit and the high school took EF4 level damage. Crazy that this tornado is forgotten now as it was over a mile wide and had winds over 200 miles per hour took out 280 homes and 22 businesses and killed 9 people, some who were sucked out of their storm shelters by the tornado. Btw the footage starting at 4:36 was actually captured by my family at the party for my cousins graduation :)

The second EF5... and the one everyone remembers for that harrowing camera of a house getting shredded as it barrels into it...
Every F5/EF5 tornado is a landmarker in history... shame there isn't more footage of this beast. The Parkersburg Tornado was a monster.

There is a couple of theories of why this EF5 is forgotten about, one; it's not the first of its kind, that belongs to Greensburg, and two; many of the residents of this town made the choice to keep the town as a small town, and not change it after the rebuilding process.

An enigma of a tornado it truly was. The damage produced by this monster is on par with those of the 2011 EF5s easily and amongst the most extreme ever recorded in a tornado. The tornado itself was also menacing. You have a monster-sized HP supercell. However, despite the parent storm being an HP supercell, the tornado was highly photogenic and visible in the most horrifying way imaginable.

Some friends and myself were traveling east on US 20 through Iowa that day on our motorcycles. We stopped in Parkersburg for lunch and gas, before continuing on our way. I remember the humidity and winds picking up as we resumed our trip.Later that night,in our hotel room,we turned on the TV to check the weather for the next day. We were shocked to see the friendly town that we had stopped in destroyed a couple hours after we had left it . I think of those people, and wonder if the convenience store owners,or the people who served us food made out. Enjoy the time that you've been blessed with.... because you don't know if you're going to be able to 15 minutes from now

I lived in Eldora IA like half an hour away from Parkersburg when that thing hit. We drove through a couple days after and the whole town was just piles of sticks and bricks. It got absolutely demolished. Most of the town got leveled and what didnt get leveled got flooded. We also had a freak hail storm in our town i think the same year. Softball size hail destroyed every roof, window, and vinyl siding in the town. We had no warning and some people were hospitalized with broken arms and legs because they were caught outside. Maybe it was 09 i cant remember.

I was at the campground in Elkader on this day with family. The sky was green, the air felt so charged it was almost making me vomit. We left Elkader and headed south to go home to Cedar Rapids. We ended up detouring into rural Strawberry point to my wife parents house to go to their basement. We then continued south and were met with another tornado south of Lamont Iowa on highway 187. It was an awesomely horrible day

At 4:36 this is the path that the vortex would take. The road is the old US 20 alignment and the vortex more or less traveled right down this road. In 5 minuets virtually everything you see here will be destroyed. I was here the following Friday and was disorented because ALL landmaks were gone.
