Thanks. Check the server has a default gateway setup (your router) and depending on your setup, you will normally need to add a forwarder in DNS to point to your ISP DNS server. That should solve the problem.
Rania Adouni Make sure you are aware of all of the implications of running a DC in a virtual environment. Recommend carefully reading Microsoft's articles regarding this first, for example Update Sequences Numbers (USNs) and replication is one very important consideration, and there are a number of others. Also read the visualisation vendor's articles and best practices too. Some people like to retain a physical DC also, depends on the solution and preference. Hope this helps.
Verification of prerequisites for domain controller promotion failed. The TCP /IP networking protocol must be properly configured. complete the configuration before you procced.

A very nice and simple video showing the steps to installing Roles and Features in Windows Server 2012 very nice! I hope you have some more videos like this; perhaps on AD DS configuration and common tasks?
Many thanks, it's worth looking at DHCP, Group Policy, Password Policies, Creating & Managing Users, Joining Computers to a domain and NTFS permissions are all worth looking at. Take a look my other videos they should help with those bits.
+jia lin First and foremost, taking time to plan carefully before installation and configuration and document. It's a good idea to have at least two DCs and DNS servers.
This the best guide for an AD Installation. Really you don't need DHCP to install on windows 2012 when you have the IP pbx or Voice system running in the same network.
Hi nice video very informative I just have a problem. When I try to install the ad ds role and services the server Manager responds with an error saying it can't find the specified file so I can't install it I've tried using my ImgMntFol and using SxS from the disk I don't know what to do now please help.
Sir, First we should install ADDS or DC in the machine. In my case I do install ADDS than DC. But if I will try to install DC First than ADDS than what happen in the server??
Hi, when you install the Active Directory Domain Services (ADDS) role in Windows Server, this promotes the server to a become a domain controller (DC). Hope this helps.
+ABDULLAH AL.Q Hi the DC password (domain admin account) will be the same as the local administrator was prior to the ADDS install, (domain\administrator). Once promoted there is no longer a local admin account, only a directory services restore mode password.
No worries, I've recently uploaded a video on the channel: 'Active Directory DNS Domain Name Considerations' that you might find useful too. Many thanks for your comment.
Nice video. I have a question though. I'm trying to add another server to the main server but I get a response that the domain name for the fist server can not be contacted and server not operational? What does that mean and what should I do?
Hi, for the ipv4 I used the same 192.168.0.210, and other info you have there but my server logout and I couldn't connect back, because i was using aws windows server 2012 r2 instance. what are mine doing wrong?
+Michael Owodunni Hi, the problem sounds more to do with the AWS config. Take a look at how your server's IP address association is set up. AWS support will be able to assist if you're not too sure.
One of the first things to check is the firewall config. When you promote a server to be a domain domain controller a domain firewall profile is added.
Hello, nice video...We just had a lab in my implementing supporting/servers class today doing exactly what you did. I thought I jump on youtube and view videos regarding the lab and I found yours! subscribed! Thank you for the video.
Hi, check you have driver installed and network adaptor enabled and plugged into a switch. If a VM again make sure a network adaptor has been assigned.
Thanks Donnie, great feedback! much appreciated. If it's of interest there is an updated version of the video that covers Windows Server 2019 ADDS on my channel.
Karan Bhalla Hi, you raise a good point. There is much debate regarding the use of internal domains for Active Directory. For the learning environment and smaller networks they have their place. However for production AD designs, particularly if you plan to use SSL certificates, I would recommend using a public domain / sub domain.
ittaster That's absolutely the case. We ran into an issue with Mac OS 10.7 when Apple decided to reserve .local domains for Bonjour. Here's a snipet from a random site explaining the issue: "For the Mac OS 10.7 (Lion) release, Apple changed the way a .local domain is handled by reserving it for Bonjour. When a user tries to login to a .local domain with only one level (that is, xxx.local), OS 10.7 first tries to resolve the name using multicast. It will try several times (with a default timeout of 5 seconds for each try), and if login fails it will then use standard DNS, causing the login delay and the delay in mounting SMB shares. Under these conditions, it may not be possible to ping domain.local, and therefore the adclient process will stay in disconnected mode for up to 60 seconds This issue affects all Mac OS 10.7 users in a .local domain and is not specific to DirectControl- managed systems. Other hostnames are resolved first using multicast and then unicast."
Karan Bhalla I recall back with Server 2003 the thinking at the time was to use .lan instead of .local because of this issue with Apple. Thanks again for raising a very good point.
+Bilel Lazreg Hi, if you're planning to try out windows server in a small test environment, I'd suggest choosing a private class 'c' IP address in the range (192.168.0.1 - 192.168.0.254) with the (subnet mask 255.255.255.0) this gives you plenty of addresses for the server and test workstations etc. hope this helps.
***** Hi, if you have performed a standard gui install, when you log into Server 2012 server manager starts automatically by default. You can also click the server manager icon at the bottom left hand corner of the screen.
+Maya Yamin If you're simply trying out Windows Server you can register with Microsoft and evaluate the product for a limited period of time. If you plan to deploy Windows Server in a live environment you will need to purchase a license.
once you have installed and configured there is no longer a network connection and i cant seem to resolve this , any tips ? it shows the same issue in the video
Hi, make sure you are using an IP address that is on the same subnet as your router, also after installing AD & DNS you will need to add a DNS forwarder to resolve external websites, take a look at my IP addressing videos and DNS videos they will help.

Samuel Pauk Hi, after you assign a static IP, are you able to ping the server or any other devices on your network like your router for example? The limited connection may be referring to the server not able to connect to the Internet. If this is the case check the default gateway is correct for your network. Hope this helps Jon
