  • In this lesson I'll show you how to play the Stevie Ray Vaughan Technique that Mayer STILL uses in every show...The SRV Rake!
John Mayer gets more than his fair share of hate in some corners of the internet for aping other guitar players. And as a young guitarist he absolutely wore his SRV influence on his sleeve...

“You find your own voice by trying and failing to sound like your heroes.”
John Mayer is one of my favourite guitar players and we could all borrow a page out of his book by studying our heroes and learning what they do, and why it works! That's how we all get a better understanding of music.

All players play similar licks... SRV played like a million Albert King licks.

Absolutely right! We all take the licks we like and make them our own. Thanks for watching!

SRV stole almost everything. There are people who think Texas Flood is his original.

You have to start somewhere until you can make it your own! Everybody does that in everything. There's a saying, "There's nothing new under the sun." So you do have to wonder where did SRV get the influence for his licks? Like John, I love him too. And it's Ok to honor your heroes by keeping a stash of their work for rainy days! Wherever they are watching from they love it and John Mayer. He's a super star and doing them proud. Legends passed him the baton! That Creative Genius, Master, 'The Man' and THE KING ❣💡🌟💎👑

Ideas are made to be used. Every guitarist to ever guitar has been influenced by someone or another at some point. What made stevie special, is that he was a one trick pony, but every time he played the same lick, he made it sound fresh by adding things, thats what made him so special, and since he played technically the same lick always, he was doing more with less, that is basically one of the strongest concepts in Music, John did the same thing, but he was stuck for a while, i dont blame him, playing Stevie's songs is not about learning the song, is about getting that intensity, that's your goal when you learn from him. But Lately John varely plays Stevie's licks anymore, yes theres hints, but thats him taking what he learned and making his own.

John Mayer is an SRV head like everyone from our era coming out of the 90s. To me he sounds uninteresting in comparison. IMO his songwriting was original for that time not his guitar playing.

Thanks for the honest comment! I 100% agree that John's song writing is a standout. But I might be in the minority as I think Mayer is a much more creative guitar player than SRV, and I LOVE SRV. Mayer has already had an extra 10 years over Stevie to hone his craft and branch out into different musical directions and it really has enhanced his playing. Once again, thanks for the comment!

He sounds like any generic guitar player that practices other people's stuff. Doesn't seem to be much originality in his playing, and it definitely doesn't seem to come from the heart

I would strongly encourage you to seek out the "Born and Raised" or "Paradise Valley" albums. Produced by Don Was (Rolling Stones, Van Morrison, Greg Allman etc) and has guest backup vocals from Crosby and Nash. Both incredible albums littered with original playing and songs. Thanks for the comment!
