Thank you crosscurrentjazz! After Episode #117, I got into this video looking for Abbie Lincoln being her fine jazzy self. I was clueless about the NBC TV series at the time, and what surprises are here: Miles toward his end - still fine - and that priceless Miles tag after “Hannibal”; David Sanborn showing that he actually can play the saxophone (hanging in there with Kenny Garrett!); the wildly outside Kronos Quartet with Sanborn; and the manic Flea on bass with the Chili Peppers - good god what chops! (A few years ago we heard Flea working with Ornette Coleman at UCLA Royce Hall, and making a serious contribution to an amazing set. “The Turnaround” was stunning. So this is “just the blues”!) Do any of you Chili heads out there know the names of their two tracks? Full performance tracks: 1) The Peeper, Hank Crawford 2) ¿What This Boy Loves To See?, Red Hot Chili Peppers 3) Hannibal, Miles Davis 4) Don’t Cry Baby, Hank Crawford, 5) ¿Begone, Begone, Begone? Red Hot Chili Peppers 6) High Fly, Abbey Lincoln 7) Spoonful, Kronos Quartet with David Sanborn
Scurrying around Wikipedia, ALLMUSIC, etc., here’s more-or-less complete track info, except for the Red Hot Chili Peppers: 1) The Peeper [Hank Crawford] Hank Crawford, alto (1st & 3rd solos); David Sanborn, alto (2nd solo); Howard Johnson, bari; Philippe Saisse, keyboards; Hiram Bullock, guitar; Tom Barney, bass; Omar Hakim, drums; Don Alias, percussion. 2) ¿What This Boy Loves To See? Johnson / Saul Bernie / Stella Unger] Hank Crawford, alto (1st & 3rd solos); David Sanborn, alto (2nd solo); Howard Johnson, bari; Philippe Saisse, keyboards; Hiram Bullock, guitar; Tom Barney, bass; Omar Hakim, drums; Don Alias, percussion. 5) ¿Begone, Begone, Begone? Red Hot Chili Peppers: Anthony Kiedis, vocals; Flea, bass, John Frusciante, guitar; Chad Smith, drums; David Sanborn, alto; uncredited tenor. 6) High Fly [Randy Weston / Jon Hendricks] Abbey Lincoln, vocals; Phil Woods, alto (1st & 3rd solos); David Sanborn, alto (2nd solo); Howard Johnson, bari; Philippe Saisse, keyboards; Hiram Bullock, guitar; Tom Barney, bass; Omar Hakim, drums; Don Alias, percussion. 7) Spoonful [Willie Dixon] Kronos Quartet: David Harrington & John Sherba, violins; Hank Dutt, viola; Joan Jeanrenaud, cello; with David Sanborn, alto.
7 years later: 1st RHCP song is "Subway to Venus" from Mother's Milk 2nd song "Sexy Mexican Maid" from same album & then they go into a muppet version of AC/DC's "Back In Black" @ the end. Mother's Milk was their 4th album from '89, 2 years later Blood Sugar Sex Magik would propel them into superstardom. MM was the last album of theirs i had before i fell off.
