I really appreciate your excellent and very learned view and dedication to teach us freely such an complete history of church in the western world. Great! Thank you! Praise God! Glad your on here. Your a blessing. And commentary on this tour is very good. Light and points well received. A more than competent teacher of teachers.
I will listen to everything. It takes a lot of time and dedication collate sources and gain historical knowledge and have a good memory.to teach what you have been blessed to share with us. An abundance of wonderful things to know. Helps to discern why we are here and what occurred on the past to bring us to this level of history presently. We stand on other shoulders before us. And here we are on our so called " post modern" world.
William Tyndale's work, compared to that of Martin Luther, is barely recognised today. The KJV of the bible, probably the most read book in human history, can be attributed mainly to Tyndale's tenacious and faithful labour many years before. A true martyr betrayed like his Master. Bruce, thanks for elucidating the facts so well. You have a gift.
I am so grateful for these excellent lectures on Church history. We need to remember the long path that so many saints and reformers of the Christian faith have trod to try to keep all of us understanding fully the love of Christ.
Well, as it turns out, I am launching a series this fall on that very topic. It's called 'Presbyterians and the American Revolution,' and instalments will begin in the next few days. Thanks for your interest!
When the student is ready, the teacher will appear. Earlier maybe, you would not have appreciated them so much. It is in God's timing, as are all things in our lives.
Every art and every investigation, and likewise every practical pursuit or undertaking, seems to aim at some good: hence it has been well said that the Good is That at which all things aim.
Nice presentation on the effects of Reformation. The Reformation was an important event that evolved since its creation. Being a push to return at the origin of Christianity it developed many unintended consequences. Wile Catolic Church remained undivided, after Reformation so many protestant branches emerged. Today we may count more than a dozen of these branches. We may take into account only some of the major tendencies in Protestantism: Adventists; Anabaptists; Baptists; Calvinism; Congregationalism; Lutheranism; Methodism; Pentecostalism; Presbyterianism; Puritanism; Spiritism; Unitarianism. In reality there are many more owing the fact that every day a new wise man or a clever thinker, taking some paragraphs of the Bible, can establish a new branch of Christianity if he has enough media power. This is somehow confusing how is possible to emerge such a numerous members of the Christian family. The truth is, at the beginning of Christianity, in 1st and 2nd century AD there were so many Judaic sects which disappeared in time. This took place due to the fact that these sects were made by human hands. The one made by God survived in time, I mean Christianity. For now we are pretty sure that the Catolic and Ortodox branch of Christianity did survived. Probably this is the time to see and wait what Protestant sects will survive in time. The old idea that Bible alone is enough to be red to produce a Christian is not valid anymore and could create more confusion than in the past when a king or a prince could dictate the faith of his subjects. The reality is that reading is more and more difficult to find.
Since the Reformation the population of the world has grown by billions. It isn't logical to think that millions of Christians over the centuries would agree on points of thought that are not clearly delineated in the Scriptures. And the Roman Catholic church is not free from divisions, conflicts and gross lack of self governance. Nevertheless, the truth of the Gospel remains. Perhaps we need to concern ourselves more with what our Lord said in Luke 18:8 than with our doctrinal divisions. The world needs to hear the Gospel.
Going into the future, I would bet that the truly Reformed in their faith, will not cave into the foretold Apostasy. Look at what the RCC's pope is saying today and how much of that church is OK with it. As for the bible alone not being efficacious in the salvation of our souls, that is an ignorant and abominable thing to say. This is God's Word that you are speaking of, and He says my Word is Truth. Turning to God's Truth, and away from the lie of the Devil, has the power of salvation, both Justification and Sanctification. (Romans 1:16) The RCC is full of unbiblical, impotent, nonsense ideas, that blinds the eyes of its adherents, using some truth, but mixing it with lies and myths. A glaring example is the teaching that the RCC's mary, is some kind of mediator between God and Man, when the bible says that Jesus Christ himself is the only qualified mediator, and the only one who can reconcile wicked sinners to God. (1st. Timothy 2:5-6) Woe to anyone who stands before God and attempts to profess anything but Christ as the reason for their salvation.
Why is my on-line degree only including one link to you near the end of the course and after I have written some exams? I could have listened to this and your other videos much earlier. I wish I could attend your lectures in person.
Antwerp was back then a city in the duchy Brabant and was part of the Habsburg Netherlands. (Belgium did not exist yet and Holland does not equate the Netherlands.) The duke of Brabant at that time, emperor Charles V of the Holy Roman Empire, wasn’t very tolerant towards protestants and the Netherlands weren't save. In 1523 in Brussels there were the first Dutch martyrs: Hendrik Voes and Jan van Essen. In the county of Holland (also property of Charles V.) Johannes Pistorius was martyred two years later in 1525 in The Hague.
The Jews received the Septuagint, which evolved into the Old Testament. The Church received the Books of the New Testament. Unfortunately, there was a 3rd & 4th Century Crisis in which the Gnostic Gospels nearly inundated Christian Literature with their own "holy" books. The "to the source" business was needed to separate Christian Wheat from Gnostic Chaff. Therefore, I'd like to see a future lecture on St. Irenaeus as he addressed this issue.
Hey Mr. Gore, I had a question if you don’t mind. My son and I are going through this series for homeschool and I’m making up question sheets for each episode. I’m just wondering why you only included 4 Solas instead of 5? You didn’t include Soli Deo Gloria, just wondering why that is. Appreciate your time sir, God bless!
The Reformation originally identified the 'four solas' but many years later the fifth as added as a kind of expression of praise for the effects of the Reformation. I believe that took place in the Dutch Reformed church of Holland, but I'm not certain of that.
The biggest translation error/misconception right from the get go: Ho logos means sense or the knowledge of something, like in our words ending on -(o)logy (epidemiology, numerology, astrology etc.). Astrology is not the word of stars nor is epidemiology the word of epidemics. And there are astounding parallels in other pre Christian belief system like in the Chinese Taoism, where it is all about the sense, best be read about in the Taoteking by Lao-Zi. It will remain a debate for academics why for the translations from Greek the emphasis shifted from sense to word. Therefore ad fontes…not sola scriptures but understanding the historical context, the dominant belief systems, the social environment, circumstances when the biblical text were written are equally important for the correct interpretation.
Hi Bruce, was just reading Matthew 8, where Jesus visited Peter’s house and Peter’s mother-in-law was healed of fever. How did Catholic Church deal with the fact that Jesus chose Peter, who presumably was already married when he was called to follow Jesus, and made him the chief apostle ... all the while the Catholic Church required its clergy be celibate?
To Bruce's answer, yes, and they kept on adding in non biblical ideas up until modern times, like now, blessing for SS couples. Revelation 18:4 Reform her, or get out of her, just like Luther was doing.
Tyndel was absolutely not in Holland when the British authority asked his extradition. The Dutch authority had nothing to do with it. Tyndale was betrayed by Henry Phillips [29] to the imperialauthorities,[30] seized in Antwerp in 1535, and held in the castle of Vilvoorde(Filford) near Brussels.[3 holes of knowledge in history should not be improvised by facts not historically proven
Marco PELLEGRINI you are absolutely right - and although I appreciate these lectures I have noticed a bit of a skew towards Augustine and a weird combo of ecumenical political correctness and a liberal academic view of prophecy which we should be wary about.
Belgium did not exist in the 1500's, that country started in 1830. Neither did Holland exist as a country, only as a province in the north of the Low Lands. Flanders is where Vilvoorde is in the 1500's. Sir Thomas More would bring suspects home to torture, and would betray England for which he was beheaded. He was canonized in 1935, when Stalin was working out More's Utopia, and Sir Thomas More was reading for all students in the Soviet Union. If you find Sir Thomas More an great man, I get worried about your country men.
There is some information on this page: www.spirituallysmart.com/redmass.html According to Dr. Ian Paisley, Thomas More was behind the arrest of William Tyndale, but that page is not on line any more. Thomas More torturing suspects, was mentioned in the documentary, A Lamp In The Dark by Chris Pinto, where also historians are interviewed, but I am not sure what his source is for this. Thomas More being read at Soviet schools I was able to check, when I met an older man from the Ukraine, a country that was part of the Soviet Union. People who would read the Bible where often facing terrible torture in the 1500's. Beheading for becoming a saint, and I wonder what "miracles' the Vatican made up for that, can not be compared to the torture and attempted genocide protestants would face.
Netherlands started in 1815, after Napoleon was defeated at Waterloo. Than named, the Kingdom of the Netherlands, was what currently are Belgium, Luxembourg and the Netherlands. Under the second king there, King William I. The First King of the Netherlands was Louis Napoleon, a brother of Bonaparte who created the Dutch Monarchy. In 1830 a revolt would separated the countries in three. The word "Belgium" is from a map of the Netherlands named: The Leo Belgicus. duckduckgo.com/?q=leo+belgicus&t=ffsb&atb=v80-7&iax=images&ia=images Belgium would be the name of the whole of the Netherlands. The word Netherlands is an English interpretation of "Nederland", Neder-land, which means low-country. Low compared to the sea, large parts of the country are below sea level. For Germany, Britain and Franc, it is better to have 3 weak countries, than 1 strong country as their neighbor, some suppose. Could be, but my impression would be that the Jesuits wanted a Catholic country, Belgium was Roman Catholic while Netherlands was Protestant, officially, after 1830.
Thanks for the additional information. As you might imagine, as a public teacher in the church, I must avoid relying on hearsay, as much as I might privately like to believe. it.
I understand. Your respect for Thomas More, that you expressed in your lecture, is what I was commenting and concerned about. The late Dr. Ian Paisley was also heading the European Institute of Protestant Studies, many Americans have looked into his publications. Dr.Paisley is valid authority. I will not Judge Thomas More, but he was an intelligent and very dangerous spy and rhetorician. My take on him would be, to warn people against such people, but your lectures are very well done. No complaints here. Thank you for uploading.
The Church never said it wrote the Bible. It's convenient for you to quote ignorant catholics on the matter. The Church did recieve the Canon but it itself needed to be inspired and infallible in choosing out which books are inspired. The rule of faith and principle of unity preceded scripture and not the other way around. Sola sciptura places the carriage in front of the horse.
+Bruce Gore To say something that audacious is really ignorance. Sorry for being blunt but that's just the truth. God inspired the writers. The Church had nothing to do with the content or inspiration. But the Church was needed in order to determine what was or wasn't inspired, orthodox, and true to teaching tradition. Luther may have not wanted free style intepretation but he basically gave the foundation for independent interpretation completely bereft of history, tradition and unity of doctrine.
Must I say that your analysis of catholic teaching on salvation through works is incomplete. It leaves out the most important aspect of works. Namely works done through Christ. I feel like catholics are given an unfair shake whenever protestants say we earn salvation or that works saves us. Yes salvation is based on works but not works done by us but by the grace of God such that we can never boast of any accomplisment, rather praise God for the good He has done through us. It is hence a works OF CHRIST done THROUGH US salvation. That is the more complete and precise way if stating the catholic position. Thankyou.
