    Trombone player, here. Stork mouthpieces are awesome and very customizable. I own so tons because of the price

      The price is WHACK considering how high quality the pieces are!

    From my experience, Curry BC line gets massive sound without being tubby, although it definitely makes you work a little more. It's worth noting that the rims are improved versions of Bach Mt. Vernon rim designs, not exactly the modern Bach rims. Also a quick fix for rotary.
    The Bach Symphonic line had a brighter, edgier tone than the Curry BC I tried, but for my heavier-than-average piston C, it balanced well. Many of my colleagues from college started picking these up and never looked back.
    Another popular Bach setup is the "Michael Sachs" 1.5C, 23 throat, 117 backbore. One may be able to acquire this for under the magical $100 by picking up a 1.5C with a bad shank or backbore, and a Bach E cup mouthpiece with a bad rim or cup, and having a tech thread the good top and backbore to screw together, and alter the throat once the halves match.

      Hi Bobby! Thanks for sharing your thoughts on the Curry and Bach Symphonic lines. As far as your solution to the Sachs piece under $100 - I see what you’re thinking but think the price of getting the components threaded would still be enough to put it over! Unless maybe you’ve gotten it done cheaper somewhere. 🤓

      @@JonTalksTrumpet Great video as always, by the way! I think it depends on how cheaply you can find used mouthpieces, and if you have a good, and affordable, local tech. Sending the work out to one of the big shops will yield a good result, but you're right, it may get fairly expensive.

    Yeah, I can't say good enough things about Phyllis Stork. About 13 years ago I was living in Burlington and having issues with my playing (was on a standard 3C at that time). Took an hour drive to her workshop in Plainfield where she put me in a 1.5E 28T and spent about an hour teaching me how to play it properly. An hour of her time undid years of poor embouchre habits and changed my playing forever. Maybe the most incredible thing that's ever happened to me on the horn. That mouthpiece turns out to be pretty terrible for C trumpet (well, at least I sound like garbage on it)....so I tried a bunch and landed on the....2B+25C. All mouthpieces are anatomically specific to the player but this one seems a great set up...

    Used to play on a Bach symphonic 1.25C 24/24. Felt I was over blowing with the 24 hole, so I went down to a 25 and that seems to line everything up for me. Also I read that Ray Mase used the same combination 25/24, so that was a motivator.

    The Bach symphonic series fit more on a higher resistance trumpet and if you use it on a Yamaha Bb or C trumpet it might be harder to play quieter

    • @JonTalksTrumpet
      @JonTalksTrumpet  2 года назад

      Hey Daniel! Thanks for watching and offering your opinion - but, I don’t really agree with this comment. Yamaha makes many trumpets, some with more or less resistance, and the symphonic series features a variety of throat sizes that will complement or not complement many different styles of horns. I would not say that in general Yamahas are less resistant, or that other brands would be more resistant, and the many symphonic series pieces offer plenty of different options to balance whatever horn you’re playing on. 🤓🎺

    Jon, your videos are all super helpful and informative - especially for players like me who play professionally but maybe haven't given mouthpiece selection as much thought as I should. Do you have any thoughts (or videos) on how your mouthpiece selection might differ between horns (Bb, C, Eb, etc) and contexts (orchestral, chamber, solo)? Thanks!

      This is a great question - perhaps one I will answer in a future video! So glad you watch and enjoy my videos. I certainly enjoy making them! 🤓🎺 what would you think about a live format for me to answer these types of questions - maybe a weekly live stream?

      @@JonTalksTrumpet A la “two minutes with Tom?” I think that would be cool, and look forward to any thoughts you have on this subject!
      On a related note: I studied with Bob Sullivan who told me that although he typically plays something similar to his Yamaha model on C trumpet, he often plays a stock Bach (at the time) on Bb. Nice lightbulb moment when I realized I didn’t have to play my 24/24 on EVERYTHING 🤪

    I have some monster mouthpieces. You need to try a Wick 1X. its a copy of a 19th century F trumpet mouthpiece that belonged to John Solomon, principal trumpet of the LSO. It has a fairly wide flat rim that can hold your lips in place and stop them collapsing. I also have an Alliance 1 which is a bit like a Bach 1 but with a funnel shaped bottom to the cup. It makes the Vachianno 1 look like a piccolo trumpet mouthpiece. Then I have a custom Schilke 20E4 with a 24 throat. That is my rotary mouthpiece and you feel you are waking the Norse gods when you play Wagner on it.

      Incredible!! I would love to try some of those beasts. I would also love to one day be able to demonstrate a low F trumpet for my channel… maybe someday I could go to Europe and go to the Thein factory to try it. Big mouthpieces are so fun, just hard to get the aperture vibrating that wide!

      @@JonTalksTrumpet Crispian Steele-Perkins is currently selling two English slide trumpets from the 19th Century. It's what orchestras used here well into the 19th century. Students still had to learn on them in the 1920s. Here is a link to the ones for sale: gh.cm/36LKzUU

    Hi, have you ever compared shorter mouthpieces like monette does with normal ones ? Thank you for all your videos

    • @JonTalksTrumpet
      @JonTalksTrumpet  2 года назад +1

      Hey Michael! Nice to hear from you again. I would definitely like to do that! Basically the shorter length I think allows you to have a more flared backbore with less overall volume by truncating the length on the shank end.

    What are the essential characteristics that a mouthpiece must have to be ideal for a rotor trumpet? I currently use the Yamaha 16E4 on my Schgerl Wien and I like it, but I like to try different options.
    Thanks for so much information!

      This is a great question, but I am not well equipped to answer it! Certainly many people like the Breslmair G2 and similar for rotary but I always find it a bit tricky to switch to from piston trumpets for whatever reason. I personally have a few Josef Klier (JK) mouthpieces that I like on rotary as well, a 4C and 4B A2. I am still trying to learn what I can about rotary trumpet mouthpiece designs but I am not yet able to answer your question about optimal characteristics with any degree of certainty. Let me know what you discover in your experimentations!

    Hey Jon
    The 6B and BM both ‘feel’ more shallow and they are according to Bach’s mouthpiece site , but not by much I’ve been told. Is that true ? I’m used to the straight 6 cup and flatter rim. Big open feel but not many highs. I ordered a Yamaha 13c4 which is basically a 6B but the comparator has the 13c4 allowing a little more lip room than the Bach 6B which doesn’t curve out and then back in like the Yamaha 13C4…thoughts ?

  • @markaustin3801
    @markaustin3801 Год назад

    Hi Jon
    I’m looking for a flatter style rim (contour like a Bach straight 6) with a B cup , standard backbore and throat.
    I’ve got thin lips and the flatter rims really are preferred. Is there such a mouthpiece as a 1 piece anywhere ? I’ve tried the Hagstrom and it was too tubby and dark…I was wanting around a Bach 5B cup but a rum contour like a Bach straight 6.
    All my professional career I’ve not benefited as I could have in a flatter rim I think.

    Hi Jon,
    This is a great video!!
    I am trying to find a Curry BC or a Bach Symphonic in a 1.25 rim and the 24/24 (throat/bb). Could you reply with any sellers on your list?
    Thanks again!!
