Although not a really great composer, Boito did, IMO, come through with one memorable score. It is more than a one aria opera as the Prologue & Epilogue alone demonstrate. They are not alone. L‘ALTRA NOTTE & Faust‘s final aria are examples as well as the stunning scenes for Mefistofele especially if you have a superb singing actor. Although Ramey has a smooth timbre & conventionally beautiful instrument he must bow to Norman Treigle in this role. Treigle‘s sound was unique & more exciting & memorable in live performance than on record. Having watched Treigle in the role on stage & also owning his studio recording is a case in point. He timbre in the former is rough but seeing him in the role onstage some 5 months before his death remains a revelation. Ramey, theatrically, is just not in Treigle‘s league, IMO, nor I doubt if anyone since has had similar impact in the role. Treigle remains truly in class of his own among operatic singing actors & Chaliapin is perhaps his only rival, in this role anyway.
Further proof, not that we needed it, that Boito was an infinitely better librettist than composer, the one aria (You know which one.) notwithstanding.
Magnifico Ramey! Insuperabile!
Grande Samuel Remy. Un grande Mefistofele ❤❤❤
