General info for some folks that don't know:
Ertl, Johnny Lightning and Racing Champions ended up under the same parent company at one point back around 2002 or so. Not long after, some of the castings from this Ertl line got re-tooled for use in Johnny Lightning, going to metal base, no extra base pieces, and the trunk was tooled shut (I believe they were tooled with a spin post). Off the top of my head, the '65 Chevelle, Ford Thunderbolt, '61 Impala, and '71 Charger were modified for JL use. (This is why some RC castings ended up as JL as well)
There was a Kmart exclusive line under the Route 66 Toy Company banner that utilized toolings from this Ertl line as well as Racing Champions. Usually the Ertl tools didn't have different color pieces for the bases but they're still all separate pieces.
When Round 2 took over in 2016, several of these Ertl castings got released under the Racing Champions Mint line. '65 GTO, '69 Dodge Charger Daytona, '61 Ford Starliner, '62 Pontiac Catalina, '69 Chevy Chevelle, and '69 Mustang have all been used under the RCM banner in the last 8 years at least once.

So glad you are showing 50s and 60s cars. Thanks

Nice cars. As far as I can remember, these cars were ahead of their time when it came to detail. The only other manufacturer would have been Greenlight with detail. But I'm not sure when they came out.
I do have a couple of the Ertyl cars. And like you, if I find them at a reasonable price, I'll snag them up. Their not high on my list, but I do, occasionally, run across them at yard sales and flea markets. Thanks for showing them. Be safe and God Bless.

I enjoyed buying these when new. Pre-GL and a step above JL. I am a fan of 50s fin cars and these covered them well. My gripes match your gripes. I have not seen many at diecast shows in recent years. I had a few crumble from metal fatigue.

I have almost all of these cars in all colors
I have been collecting die-cast in all scales since early 70s
I currently have 2 warehouses and a 4.bedroom house full of toys.

I only have a couple of these. They’re great, nice to see them showcased here! Probably the closest thing to this in vintage diecast would be Impy/Lone Star stuff from Britain.

I also have some of these 1:64 diecast. I love the detail. Wish i could of picked up the whole collection but i did not. Oh well. I have that camero but mine is blue with white strips. I also have the american muscle 1:64, 24k gold car. I think this collection is very cool and would love to get more. Great video 😊 have a great day

I have the '69 Cougar Eliminator and '65 GTO in my collection. Both are fantastic in terms of detail. But both also needed a wee bit of TLC. Definitely worth getting at the right price.

I love these cars and have quite a few. I have several in small boxes without any sort of acrylic case. Just in a paper box with a small window. They may have clear plastic on the ends to hold the car steady inside the box but I can’t recall for sure.
I first got into Ertl American Muscle from their 1/18 scale cars prior to the 1/64. My only gripe has been they don’t always hold up well and I’ve had paint actual cracks & chip off on certain models. Oddly I found the same on 1/18 scale. Certain models in certain colors did not hold up well in storage.

BTW that 58 Plymouth is actually a Belvedere. Furys were only available in Buckskin Beige with Gold accents. Ertl missed that detail.

This quality of American Muscle models in 1/64 needs to be done more. Sure, AW and GL do great stuff, but usually not with inserted plastic pieces or as much detail. Kyosho has a few American cars this detailed and MiniGT has done the Lincoln Capri, but these ERTL are rare gems.
