- Renowned activist, author and professor Naomi Klein discusses the importance of youth voices, including 16-year-old Swedish climate activist Greta Thunberg, in communicating the urgency of the climate justice movement. Klein’s new book, “On Fire: The (Burning) Case for a Green New Deal,” addresses the necessity of structural change to combat rising global temperatures and climate injustices. Klein praises Greta for her “moral clarity” as one of many youth voices that “burst through the bureaucratic language with which we shield ourselves from the reality of the stakes, the extraordinary stakes, of our moment in history.”

I see your opinion. Not a very good opinion but hey we can all have one. Fighting climate change will be an open market and yes money will be made on it. We are for apparent free and open Capitalist markets or are we. Free and open Capitalism isn't held up by Gov hand outs to the fossil fuel industries. Take the new and upcoming markets and capitalise on it. But don't scalp the earth while doing it. This could be the greatest financial opportunity the world has seen. A massive new shift in innovation and a new structure and market to do it with. I see opportunity.

She breathed new life into an almost lost cause. And now MSNBC are doing whole segments on what Bernie Sanders said 4 years ago: That the Pentagon ranks *Climate Change as the top security threat to the USA.* Ahead of ISIS, ahead of Russia, Iran or anything else.
Four years ago Cooper and Tapper looked at Bernie as if he were crazy. Now it is undeniable.

Kline kneeling at the feet and hanging on every word of this child is mind boggling. Is this the same women who wrote "The Shock Doctrine"? But then again there were places she didn't want to go in that book, the same with Chomsky. These people waffle on a lot, but in the end they don't really say anything. Stating the obvious or asking simple questions only takes a few words, but that's not allowed in our new so so diverse and all inclusive world.
Why is it that "Democracy NOW!" seems to be the only one covering this? oh - I know the answer. sigh

Prophetic is not the right word for Gretas message. Her message is just a message. Prophetic is Biblical word and have a meaning about Gods men telling and warning about what will happen to people and nations and world if they don't follow the word of God.
So how can Greta give prophetic word when she don't believe in God but in scientists?
It's unfortunate that children from areas that have been heavily affected by climate change, unlike the country that she's from, are not upheld like she is. It would be better to hear from children in the Bahamas, India, or Brazil, but they probably can't afford to take a year off from school to go sailing around the world in a solar-powered yacht. Also, she's not bringing any new ideas/experiences, not that I would expect her to, but it's weird that people are holding her up like she's bringing anything new to the conversation.
Is Amy in love with Greta? Greta has an amazing ability?

I wish there was more focus on other young people not only Greta. Stop putting her on a pedestal.
Soph had twice as many RUclips subscribers as Democracy Now when she was deplatformed for speaking truth to power on social and climate issues. Perhaps Amy could interview her so we could have better insight into American youths and their outlook.

Considering what we know of her mental history (OCD, anxiety, depressive episodes, to say nothing of the Asperger's), her passion makes a lot of sense. As the parent of an Asperger's kid with anxiety disorder and OCD, and knowing how literal my son is (to say nothing of how wicked smart and how good his memory is), I can tell you from experience that it's very hard to shield them from their own fears when they become overwhelming, but my wife and I, with help from some very good professional help, now have a 20-year-old son who you'd only know had Asperger's if he told you. It looks and sounds like Greta's parents (who are actors and climate activists) went another route, playing up every fear and anxiety. She looks to be wicked smart, and probably has a phenomenal memory, but I worry about her mental state. Shame on her parents, the media, and anyone else using this poor girl, for corrupting this child for their own wicked ends.
Keeping the wastefulness and growth going while adding some renewable energy will solve the carbon problem?
I hope Greta will never have to ask the big question "Who am I?" Which is for a non diagnosed person on the spectrum really difficult to answer. Hopefully she has great counseling and keep climate issues as her special interest so many of the crucial questions that can marter a person on the spectrum do not arise for he. She gives so much hope even also for other neuro atypical people ;-)

If she did make $$ then maybe she would consider donating that to the folks in poor countries suffering by the climate right now. If she kept that $$ then the press would destroy her and the movement would suffer greatly. I’m sure she is in negotiations right now to get that book or documentary started. One is reminded of the Children's Crusades of the 13th century, in which religious fanaticism spread among children, thousands of whom either died on the trek or were sold into slavery in North Africa. The religion in question this time is Scientism, which these children entirely swallow, as does most of modern civilization, without criticism but with adolescent passion and despair. They go far beyond the adult lip-service Sunday obeisance to Science, the institutional organization that dispenses certain necessary technologies and administrates birth, death, drugs and healing, but literally believe that complete subservience to the dogma will save the world from Destruction. Do we really think that teenagers today are wiser than they were in the 13th century?

But now they are facing an existential crisis that is changing their future. Why should they not react, when we adults have failed them?!

I'm sort of surprised to hear that girls are sounding the alarm more than boys. I wouldn't think gender would play much into this issue.
Why surprised? Girls are more hysterical, more emotional, have lower IQ. They are thus more easily manipulated.
