Augsburg was the best Army duty station in the world ! Beautiful city, great food & beer, friendly locals. I was there for 14 months, living at Sheridan Kasern. Sad to see all of that has been razed and apartment buildings built. SDEUR was my unit. Great duty, plenty of travel. Those were the best years of my life.

Yes. lot of change in the last 20 years. Not so much where the appartments were, i live in one close to to the former Burger King( KFC now). The car repair workshops on the other side are all long gone, now flats and a park in place. Once also home to Augsburgs greatst club(s), the Kantine. Just memories left....

I went back to Germany in 2004 to do some work there as a contractor in Darmstadt. I took a day and drove to Augsburg. At that time Sheridan was still standing but all closed up. I drove out to the Field Station (took me a while, i got lost). I worked at the Satellite Terminal there from 1984 -85. I remember I used to jog through the old Nazi buildings from the old air base at the field station but the year I left (85) they plowed most of those old buildings down. I found an underground bunker entrance that was welded shut under the kitchens out there but never got into them. Gone now. Good times, good memories.

Curtiss I was told that President Johnson made a deal to reduce the presence of US military in Germany so 70% of us were reassigned suddenly. Augsburg was the head quarters for the 24th Inf. so mt Dad told me they were shutting Augsburg down 100% . So seeing it again is a surprise but, it was the first time the Army changed it's mind. Thank you for the pics I was there for the elementary school and then swiched to High the next...no middle school. I had no idea how good I had it there...we were assigned to another 2 yrs so I felt cheated and blessed at the same time. Ausgsburg was so specail to me. Three years ago I planned on going back without the infoyour web site provided.

What? Augsburg has been heavily gentrified in recent years and the historic old town has been polished quite a bit. Personally, that's what I dislike (I liked the historic looks, apart from the few alleyways that actually really needed to be polished), but I think it's less trash than it used to be.
Compare Augsburg and generally cities within the Free State of Bavaria with the cities of other federal states and you find that the streets and buildings are heckin clean. Not sure what you're talking about since pretty much all places I know of in Europe and even the states are much dirtier
