Fun fact: when ji yeong talked about “mojito in the maldives” is a reference to a famous korean meme from another movie with Lee byung hyun (the front man in squid game), where he accidentally says “lets drink maldives in mojito”.

this episode showed us different ways to win: manipulation (sang-woo), cheating (gi-hun), sacrifice (ji young/il nam), and fair and square/luck (deuk-su) i love her filipina accent on a side note 😃

Squid Game is a real roller-coaster - great and emotional show!
This episode caught me totally off guard. If I can summarize it in one word, it would be: intense.
The thing you said at the end is so insightful and it's something nearly everyone missed, and I'm so glad you noticed it. The difference between Sang Woo and every other player is that he had it made. He wasn't being ground down by capitalism and circumstance. He had his entire community band together to get him educated and get him a nice, boring, white collar job. And he gambled it all because it wasn't enough for him. He had the grindset "get rich at any cost" mentality, and it was so unnecessary. And it put him in a hole he couldn't get out of. Made him as desperate as the others. There's a huge difference between him and the other players morally because of that. None of them have a choice, but Sang Woo is the only one you can point at and say "it's completely his fault he's there." And that makes the awful things he does to survive absolutely reprehensible in a unique way.
i can‘t hate Sang Woo to much honestly. We simply don‘t know how we react if sudden death is so near to us. Your body and mind goes Crazy when you are fearing for your life and you know you might die in a minute. It was dirty how he won though. But it‘s called survival of the fittest ( mentaly and physically ) for a reason.
Nahh, it's different though. The thing is sangwoo has been setting them up and planning their deaths from the start, all while knowing that they considered him to be one of their friends.
no one is criticizing him for trying to survive. but his method of doing it was so callous and hurtful. the betrayal made it a lot worse.
@@pencil6965 yep but we don‘t know if we would act the same. Everybody would say they are like 456. But in reality we would be more like 218.
The guy did the same on the outside, even when he had the privilege of a university education from a reputed college. He didn't have to end up in the games.

Netflix has two English subtitles for Squid Game: English and English CC. English is the better one. English CC is not.
The naive, gullible and subservient Ali is expertly used here simply for comedy relief. He's a laugh riot!

I think you didn’t get Sang Woo’s psychology especially after he knew he lost.
What he did is despicable, everyone agrees on this.
But the explanations you gave in the review are not really relevant.
Try to be in his head. Ali is clearly not the best contender, plus you have the feeling he cheated because he won every turns. You lost, you know you ll die but also that he s likely to die just after too. A natural feeling would be : « Why would I die at the place of someone who clearly i know is going to loose, while i still have a real chance to win ? ».
You might say, it’s part of the game, it’s true, but my point is not to justify it, just to understand it. He has a brain, and his brain tells him to use it, whatever the cost.
It's not despicable. It's what every single person would do in that situation.

Take a look at this guy's. It's a behind the scenes look at the two girls. The actress playing Kang Sae-byeok is Korea's top model Jung Ho-yeon. Her first acting role and she killed it in this scene. She was so into her scene, she could not break character.

According to the player count in the next episode (very mild spoiler), 21 people died in the marbles game. When it started, there were 19 pairs of players, so if only one person died in each team, it would be 19 dead. But with 21 players dead, it means that only 17 pairs had one person dying, and 2 pairs had both players die. That's the only combination that works with the numbers, so I would theorize that there were teams where both players got killed off which means that it was either a draw, or they refused to play and finish within the time limit.

Sangwoo played the game fairly. The rules say you can play any game. Ali was better at the first game, so he changed the narrative of the game. Why should Sangwoo give his life for someone else? Would you do that? They have only known each other a week...
It's the same action taken as Deok-Su and his partner, only we got the verbal affirmation when he went to the guard to change it. But they still recognize that a game is still being played and is within the boundaries of the game when Sangwoo finessed Ali.

Why do you said: "Ali has a family and a child"? Sounds like if SW has two children, then he is justified to do that.
I agree, the way people try and justify one life over another...it's a bit hypocritical. Sangwoo has a much right to live and survive regardless of his situation.
