    Rob -- wonderful informative video. The 1974 Greco 650B is their copy of Gibson's 1972 Les Paul. It features Greco embossed Maxon pickups and has a set neck.

    Thanks Rob, my very first guitar was a goldtop 73 Gneco, purchased used, in July of 74, in Sacramento, CA, for between 125 - 150. The store had thousand of guitars, like a Home Depot, you just went up and down the aisles. I can't remember the name of the store. Also anecdotal info, The had Grecos in the US Military PXs and the PX catalogs...you probably already know that. Thanks for the history. I had no idea.

    Dear Rob,
    When I was 13, I traded a Samick stratolike and an old saxophone at a small town OK music store for what I now know (thanks to this very specific video) was a '73 Greco Les Paul. I remember being totally confused, suspicious, and intrigued upon seeing it because based on everything I knew (at 13 anyway) about guitars, this one shouldn't exist. No one I knew had ever heard of Greco. Nor had they, like myself, ever seen a Les Paul knockoff come anywhere close to this one's quality and detailed likeness (bolt on neck aside). On top of all of that, it played and sounded f#ck!ng incredible! I don't have it anymore (life) but I recently started learning about them because it always seemed like a thing that shouldn't have existed, but did anyway. And now, thanks to knowledgeable people like yourself, I can finally stop wondering if I had just fever dreamed the whole damn thing. Mucho appreciado, Muchacho!
    Sincerely,

    Great Content! I am diving into guitars after spending many years dealing only with basses. The similarities between the japanese brands from this era (late 70' early 80') is overwhelming in the realm of Stratocasters. I haven't looked too much at LPs yet.

    I have 78 Greco lp standard, I was looking for a LP and I can tell you that the greco was the one that I liked the most, I was about to buy a Gibson Trad Pro V, but I saw this Greco at Portland Music Co. the finish strucked me and when I plugged in it was sealed, this guitar has more mid range and did not weight like a mf, I'm really happy that I bought it.

      I'm looking at a Greco '78 EG-800 on line. Seller says it weighs 9.5 lb, which is kind of heavy to me, but not necessarily a deal breaker. I'm seeing some over 10lbs. It sounds like you found a lighter one.
      I like a thicker late '50's neck profile. Some of these have thin necks.

    I have a Greco LP that is supposed to be a '85 Rock Spirits. But ... I can not check it because: it has a different kind of serial nr, it has a set neck (whereas Rock Spirits commonly have a 3-bolt hybrid construction), it has a mother of pearl logo different to all you've shown in this video. The previous owner told me it was part of a short run transitional model. I'm sure it's a real Greco, but up till now I did not have found a second one. Mysterious ..... but nonetheless a great playing and sounding LP.

    Hello Rob. Thanks so much for your video series about Greco, I actually bought one turned out the GE450 in tobacco sunburst, and it seems unique, but still wonder why it’s labelled as 450 when the quality is exceptional, I’m comparing it to custom shop not even standard real thing. I still wonder if my guitar feels like this, so how about the higher number ones.
    I still have a feeling that because of the higher volume produced back then there could be a misplacing of wrong label tags on the wrong actual models. My guitar is exceptionally good and I love it, it’s all original. I play it through boss k 50 mkii ex .

There seems to be zero information to be found online, but it has all the features as the other two, including pot numbers, etc. The other question concerns the narrow, 6 screw cavity cover. Hello Rob. I just bought the EG450 straight from Japan. do you think these models are still bang for the buck? Are they compared to the real gib. Also I learnt that the number of the model EG450 indicates the value of the guitar back then, is that correct? Also what makes EG700 better guitar in specs than these models EG450? First I ordered eg700 cancelled it then ordered eg450 for the £100 price difference. And kind of regretted the cancellation
    Anyway let’s see how the EG450 plays and feels , it could be good guitar.

    • @TheYetti1
      @TheYetti1  2 года назад

      Certainly could be transition or late into 76 model. Totally possible, If it lacks the serial number on the headstock you can confirm from pickup dates if original. If its a Set Neck 75 you got a winner there. Not many around.
      Id like a Naurmo model from 1975 or 76. Was the first productions of Set neck models...most likely very hand made.

    Great video Rob ! A friend has what we think is a 73 - 74 model, pancake body, gold hardware, "Gneco" with split diamond on headstock seems to be pearl inlay, block pearl inlay on1st fret & all the other inlays are block type, Maxon pups with number 23724 on each, each pup is a bit over 8k, Greco stamped onto pup covers, Made in Japan on the neck plate but no serial number on it, almost a "fretless wonder" neck, binding on neck & headstock, not "rounded off" neck next to neck pocket, bridge has either nylon or other non metal saddles, bridge & tailpiece are aluminum, tuners with the star logo, cherry sunburst finish. This seems to be a "mix" of all the info on this video, what are your thoughts on it & what year do you reckon it was born ?

    • @TheYetti1
      @TheYetti1  2 года назад +1

      My main attention would direct me towards the Neck pocket...so its NOT rounded on the bottom of the neck? Typically the black ones would be rounded, but earliest of the 73 models.
      Interesting but certainly possible...the 73ish era later in the year would bounce to those Typical Cherry Bursts.
      Very much like this...
      mojostompboxes.com/products/1973-greco-eg-500-les-paul-custom-sunburst-made-in-japan
      The Second digit in the PIckup Stamps State the year so id be pretty positive saying 1973, Should be quite the looker!

    Hey Rob, I bought what is believed to be an left handed EG-900. It’s a really cool guitar but I haven’t been able to track down more information on it. The pickups are unmarked unlike most of the models, no serial number (but the guitar was refinished) but the pots are original. From what I researched the EG-900 late 1975 and early 1976 had unmarked U-3000s that had different output compared to the marked U-3000s. I don’t know how to further identify what year and model my guitar is. Anymore suggestions you can provide? I’m at a loss and I don’t wanna take apart my guitar completely to find out. I’d appreciate the advice!!!

    • @TheYetti1
      @TheYetti1  3 года назад

      EG900 From 1976 is pretty hard to find. Congratz if so. The way to check the validity of it from then if it has no Serial Number. Your looking at 1975. With a Belly Carve in the back. Look for binding over the frets.
      If its from 1976 it should have a serial number but they wouldnt be stamped or anything..so if its painted over it would be hard to tell.
      Based on my video...Does your Logo match ones from 1975 or 1976 as there were differences...?

    • @wessoncolt1844
      @wessoncolt1844 3 года назад

      @@TheYetti1 Headstock definitely matches the standard range that you mentioned following the custom headstock for 1976-1979. The pickups dated on the guitar are May 21st 1976. Don’t see any date codes on the pots from what I see but maybe I dunno where to look. Also, I dunno if this helps but the original finish before it was destroyed was black. However, looking at the 1976 Greco Catalogue, the EG-900 was show to come in cherry burst. Dunno if black was also a color offered or something else occurred. There is no belly carve. Asked on the MyLesPaul forums as well and they aren’t even sure! I’m still in love with it but learning my guitar’s history would be great!

    How do brands like burny , Aria and Yamaha stack up against a Greco.

    • @TheYetti1
      @TheYetti1  2 года назад

      I dont have experience with them But as for quality goes id say they are all pretty comprable. Most likely made by almost the same people in different cases.
      But in terms of Rank Aria was on the top and Burny and Yamaha were pretty even.

    I have a Yamaha Studio Lord from 1980, set neck, Mahogany/maple body, Maple neck, Rosewood fret board, the head stock is a open book but not identical to the Gibson and the contoured Maple top is not identical to the Gibson, I think of it as a quality guitar that happens to resemble a Gibson Les Paul. The Yamaha was never exported when it was being manufactured. Sometimes I think they came from the same factory as the Greco as they are similar.

    Being a 73 model myself, I'd like to find a 73 Greco or Ibanez. I'm not a fan of Gibson and much more prefer the pre lawsuit Era copies.

    Hi, I recently bought a Greco custom, but I don't know when these headstock logos changed.
    Would appreciate your input.
    The custom logo i have is like a flame torch design

      Are you able to link a picture of it or email me the logo? it most likely will be something from after the 1990s if its different but still says Greco. But let me know!

      @@TheYetti1 Thanks for getting back to me. So the one I bought has got the abalone type Greco inlay. serial number 0 6568 ink stamp on the back. It seems like a 59 reassue from 1980 but it's not labeled a super real could this be from just before they started naming on that?

    Hi wonder if you could help me to figure out what model and of LP Greco?. No year stemp on headstock or plate and it's not Gnecko.

    • @TheYetti1
      @TheYetti1  2 года назад +1

      Any with no serial number could be early 90s - if its not gneco.

    This was very helpful! I was just curious about the Super Power versions? I spotted one for under $700. Looks like a beautifully made guitar!
    Edit: also subscribed as I am going to be buying one of these copies and this has been very informative! Great content!

      @@TheYetti1 No worries at all! I ended up with the 500 Super Power. The shipping did push the cost over the 500 mark I was aiming for but for the playability of the guitar, it was well worth it. It just sounds fantastic. Thanks for all your info! Keep up the good work.
