Bleach has some absolutely incredible scenes, and I want to celebrate them with my new series - Bleach: The Best Scenes - where we look at individual, impactful scenes from the story in detail. The first one is a real heart-wrencher, looking at when Ichigo crumbled at the apex of The Lost Agent Arc and seemed to lose all hope, in one of the series' toughest scenes.

My favorite scene from the TYBW has to be when Ichigo arrives from the Soul Kings palace and absolutely embarrasses the femritters. The confidence, the massive gap in power, and the drip he shows off all makes for a wonderful scene. I especially love the callback to when Kenpachi saved him in Hueco Mundo. He's now here to save Kenpachi

Looking back at that scene with Ichigo breaking down in tears was so well done and it kinda made me tear up too. And it definitely gave out more heat on Ginjo and Tsukishima for doing this to my favorite MC. The next scene you should talk about Soi-Fon breaking down in tears when she asked Yoruichi “Why didn’t you take me with you?”. Cause to me I thought that scene was so impactful and explained why Soi-Fon was so mad and disappointed with her.

If I were to pick any one scene from Bleach, it would probably have to be the first appearance of Menos Grande, way back in the Substitute Shinigami Arc. It was the moment when Hollows went from your run-of-the-mill evil spirits to something truly terrifying. That string of panels, where we see that pale hand slip out from the cracks in the sky, followed by the reveal of that grinning mask, is easily one of the most haunting moments in the whole series.

This is one of my favorite scenes in all of Bleach. It truly showed that despair Ichigo had realizing he couldn’t protect his family and friends… he couldn’t do anything… he was truly powerless… just like when his mother died… it was truly heartbreaking seeing him lose hope and in despair, and made me bawl my eyes out. Fullbring/Lost Agent is such an underrated arc imo.

Fullbringer arc is so slept on. People act like Kubo just had to write a psuedo filler arc to justify Ichigo getting his powers back but it's actually an amazing story...the raw emotion in this scene was crazy. Ichigo got mentally defeated here

It really feels like Kubo always wanted to do more in the human world on a more emotional, lower power-level scale but by the nature of Weekly Shonen Jump, he needed to get to Soul Society and after that he needed things to remain on that level with those popular characters. The volume-extra Mizuiro chapter in the middle of Soul Society really screamed "I want you all to understand this character, even if he's never relevant again." The Lost Agent Arc manages to be insanely unique and scratch that itch. I really only wish that editorial just let him cook a little longer: once the Captains come in, it really feels like we're speedrunning things.

despite everyone's views on this arc as a whole, no one can deny how IMPACTFUL and MONUMENTAL this arc (and scene) was. No enemy has pushed ichigo to cry or lose ALL hope, not even the infamous aizen has made ichigo cry. Tsukishima and Ginjo completely DESTROYED ichigo without brute force but mentally, which is even more painful than getting two holes blown in his chest. This shows how much more painful it was for ichigo to lose his powers rather than getting cut and killed. This arc revealed the psychological side of ichigo and it really did hurt more than every drop of blood that he recieved. ginjo and tsukishima (especially my brothe-- i mean tsukishima) were top tier bleach villains

I just must, must share with you that Bleach came to my awareness at that perfect adolescent age to truely energize that rebellious, "down with the man" spirit. It was one of my first animes, and I caught up to it with only 3 arcs before its cancellation. I say this to tell you Ive thought deeply about this anime, it has truely provided so much of my formulation as a person, and I have never found such an insightful, amazing passion and discussion as you provide. I found you a week ago by chance and I am eating up everything that isnt a spoiler for TYBW. You have truely rekindled such a love for Bleach at the perfect time for me before this October, and I just must thank you dearly for it. Your content is exactly what it should be, your presentation is fantastic, and your commentary astounding. You have genuinely provided a context to Bleach's meaning that I was much too young to completly comprehend as a child and you do it concisely; in a way that makes me crave to rewatch the show. Do not change a single thing, and thank you for your hard work, passion, and inspiration! You are single-handedly the best resource and commentary for Bleach I have ever found! Love you.

Rukia reappearing is one of my favorite scenes in the entirety of Bleach because I've always loved her as a character, and this just confirmed it for me. Also, it shows just how much she loves him even if not romantically. Though I did at first strongly believe she would've been the one to end up with him. So much so that I don't believe the story behind her and Renji ending up together to make as much sense. She literally could not stand living without Ichigo regardless of why. It's beautiful friendship if nothing else.

This one absolutely tore me to pieces. Imagine everybody you know and love turning their backs on you and abandoning you. Not through months and years but in the span of hours, days. It was absolutely heartbreaking to see ichigo like that seeing as how we really hadn't seen him beaten down this low in the whole series. His whole thing is protecting his friends and family and in this moment he couldn't do anything at all. You can just see the look of despair and hopelessness on his face when he comes to the realization that everything he loved was taken away and there's nothing he can do to stop it

This entire episode was the absolute best in the anime, by a mile. Seeing Ichigo break, and truly succumb to despair. Seeing all of the symbolism with him drowning in his inner world, bound by chains. Seeing him stand back up, break through those chains, and try to muster his resolve one more time... and it all culminates into the single greatest moment: The Getsuga Tensho that well and truly pierced the heavens. The dark clouds which had hung over his head and his heart are quite literally blown away in the most brilliant flash of light and sound.

The emotions displayed in this arc are amazing, the rain really added to the symbolism and gloomy/moody atmosphere. It makes Ichigo ultimately prevailing against and slaying Ginjo all the more satisfying yet Ichigo still has the decency to request his proper burial away from the treacherous intrigue of Soul Society. Treachery that was just a slight suspicion away from attacking him too.

As a preface: I didn't read the manga, and watched the anime up until this point. I only picked up the manga when I found out TYBW was a thing.
Ichigo's despair in this very moment (along with the build-up) was what made this arc top three for me. Tsukishima and Ginjo represented the type of enemy that Ichigo simply couldn't defeat with willpower and strength like most of his enemies before. It was the one time where I felt as though even if Ichigo had brutalized Tsukishima and Ginjo, that victory wouldn't really mean anything, because the two of them had already won. I felt bad when Ichigo had to give up his powers to defeat Aizen, but this moment just felt like Ginjo wanted to rub it in to our favorite carrot-top--the metaphorical kick to the metaphorical downed horse.
Bravo, Mr. Tommo, bravo. Banger after banger on this channel.

It's important to remember that, for anime only viewers, this was the very last part of Bleach. It also came immediately after the fight with Aizen, when the series was at it's most DBZ-spectacular. The Lost Agents lowers the power level and lack a lot of that spectacle until the very end. On top of that, it is one long training arc built on the MCs insecurities, which have been focused on a few times but never closely examined.
The Lost Agents arc was a victim of the anime's slashed run-time, as it was never *meant* to be the end of the story. It's a fun bridge between major story arcs, throwing around wacky powers and doing a deep dive into Ichigo as a person. The TYBW arc was supposed to be that massive spectacle that the fans wanted, but anime only viewers were left on what felt like an anti-climactic conclusion to a series that meant a lot to them.

It's important to remember that the anime was canceled on this arc. So, for anime-only fans, this was the very last part of Bleach coming off of the Aizen fight. The Lost Agents is a great arc, but it clearly wasn't intended to be the finale of the series. It's one long training arc that introduces wacky powers, a lowered power level, and dives into Ichigo's insecurities which weren't the top priority of a lot of fans. This arc focused on a lot of things aside from spectacle and wide-scale conflict because it was building up to another major arc, but without the TYBW it felt like an anti-climactic end.

When all of the charcters siad that it was not Ichigo who saves him but was Sukashimia. That must have made Ichigo crazy. But when he is stabbed in the back, and he learns that all the captains and vice captains poured their power into it, that was epic. They came to save him. Incredible.

what it takes to make normal people give up: be stronger than them
what it takes to make Ichigo give up: use an ability that even viewers have a hard time understanding to turn everyone he knows and cares about against him while being so vaguely malicious that you're legitimately terrifying on an existential level despite just being some hipster in suspenders

Awesome series idea! I would love to see coverage of the first time the hollow mask manifests in Ichigo's final fight against Byakuya. Another suggestion is the arrival of the Vizards on the battlefield. I know they didn't pan out long-term but their arrival in FKT was amazing at the time weekly.

I remember the first time watching this arc in the anime, and it didn't really respond to me at that time. After the high that was the previous arc, with how long it had been going on and then finally Aizens defeat, it was such an epic journey. To then be thrown into this kinda mellow and slow arc was strange, I'd gotten used to seeing epic battles with evil guys, so this was like hitting a switch, turning off the light.
But later when I read the manga for the first time it really changed my mind about this whole arc.
I remember investing my feelings into this journey Ichigo was taking, building his strength, hardening his resolve, and entering dangerous territories just to get the power to protect everyone important to him. It was really intriguing to see this new side of bleach that hadn't been before. But most of all, to delve deeper into the person that is Ichigo.
When I came to this part my heart was wrenching in pain, because his sorrow was so palpable, and it really got to me. No other time in bleach have my emotions been so high strung. I wanted to reach through the pages and hug him, telling him it would be alright.
I think it's especially painful because I don't think Ichigo is really afraid of dying per se, if he can save his friends and family then it's worth it. He's been near death several times and never regretted ending up there, because it was for the "right" reason, because he did everything he could. To me it felt more like he was desperate and angry in those situations, not broken and torn like at the end of this arc.
Yet at this moment, in his life, there's nothing left for him anymore. The people that carried him forward and built up his very being, were stripped away, turned into enemies. It's so incredibly dark and terrifying. That's what makes this moment so very deep and powerful. All these emotions are beautifully displayed in one simple panel, it's so palpable, and heart wrenching.
The only thing missing for me, would be a larger reaction from his father and Urahara. To see more of the emotional impact this situation would have on them. I can only imagine the pain they must've felt watching him like that. Which is why it would've been nice to actually delve into that, if just a little bit.
This whole arc left a huge impact on me, and I love it, definitely one of my favorite moments throughout the whole manga.
Thank you for discussing it and giving it such a highlight, I think this part of the story needs more attention and understanding from the fans.

Am very glad you talked about this scene in great detail within a video! As when I saw it both for the first time in the anime and when rewatching the series every so often, one thing stick with my mind and heart. This is my favorite "Ichigo" scene in the series to date, with the scene of Masaki when fighting Grand Fisher & Aftermath of Battle with Renji (when he discusses his past w/ Rukia and him begging to Ichigo) following close behind. Our protagonist Ichigo has been severely damaged and taken aback several times before this moment, yet it only really seemed like that. A push backwards. He'd somewhat just continue walking forward again even if at times appearing pessimistically cold or shut off in others eyes. This time though? Not a chance. Take all the pain he would've felt during the loss of his mother, his fear and humiliation when failing to save Rukia from Renji & Byakuya originally, the rejecting nature he embraces when trying to fend off hollows as his powers continually and rapidly decrease until they eventually extinguish and Rukia fades beside him.
Bundle all the weight he's felt during those moment, smash it onto him like a bulldozer, and finally let the realization set it for him. Not only has he lost everything regarding his power to protect others like seen prior, he's lost SO much more at this moment. Finally thinking he regained all his lost abilities only to lose it all to the one he trusted the most at that point, only to also lose everyone else close to him.....Family....closest friends.....boss.....all the other friends he met alongside Ginjo. No matter how strong of a facade he's tried to play before, nothing can stop or withhold the emotional devastation he's suffered just then. Ichigo, our protagonist, and probably someone many viewers resonated or felt themselves bond together with, is finally crushed and broken beyond all belief and understanding. All he can do is scream and cry on the cold rain covered ground. The still shot or tiny scene where pans to Uryu looking over at Ichigo screaming and pouring his eyes and emotional core out. Seeing it has even an effect on Uryu a usually stoic character whom wouldn't expect much sentimental resonance from at a triggering event like this.....its heart-wrenching! We saw his inner world flooded much like before, expect not only is his whole inner world flooded like the town surrounding him, "BUT" he's heavily wrapped around in chains from shoulder to shoulder, physically and emotionally forcing him down on the ground. With only his pure resolve/desire and pride he retained in the very beginning of the show, being enough to break all the chains apart to stand once more.
I understand and won't deny others opinions on this arc, as I know it isn't anywhere near as action-filled or fast paced between fights and the small interludes therein. It doesn't compare to amount of fights or fights in general from Soul Society arc, The grandiose force you experienced and albeit slowly at times inevitably succeeded past with the Arrancar & Espadas, The final battles in Karakura Town and Aizen against the Soul Reapers and eventual end at the hands of Dangai Ichigo. Yet I feel like that's exactly the point set to be made here and why I enjoy it so greatly, it ISN'T trying to focus primarily on action or that heavily on the fights in general. This is a personality arc in my eyes true and through! Seeing more of Ichigo besides just his raw strength and power, we delve deeper into his mindset and emotional stability or concerns than any arc prior. Who knows what they 1000 year blood war may bring to us with the anime creeping upon us soon, will we receive something just as damaging with possible additional or expanded content? Maybe....but what I do now for certain. This scene. Just for Ichigo as a person. Not as a fighter, As a soul reaper, As a partial Vizard, Or even a partial Quincy. It is the strongest we get to see him for whom he is, we can very easily connect or compare ourselves to Ichigo's level at this time. A young man whom's only desire is to take care of and protect those around him, to maintain that strength needed to achieve said goal. Nothing more, Nothing less.

This arc as a whole is what I point to whenever people say that Ichigo is a bland character, I don't think it's wrong of me to say that this is Ichigo at his most relatable. The feelings and bouts of loneliness, betrayal, depression, powerlessness. This arc had so many things we as readers could resonate with probably more than any other arc in Bleach just by its comparatively grounded nature. Ichigo, while a warrior in his own right, is still JUST a human. A teenage boy at that.
I have to agree with Tommo on his bit about Kubo's artwork. It is absolutely phenomenal and there are so many good panels and pages. I'd have to say my favorite in all of Bleach would have to be when he's about to release his new Getsuga after getting his powers back.

The reveal of Ginjou’s true motives and then when Ichigo thinks his father and Kisuke have also been turned against him was so good. Ichigo’s brief despair was so emotional especially when you hear it in the anime. Like you said, Ginjou is almost like an older brother to Ichigo which I love. Even after Ginjou’s betrayal and death, Ichigo goes back to Soul Society for Ginjou’s body to give him a burial in Karakura.

Also, a friend of mine once said that the reason she didn't like this arc was the lack of known characters appearing, maybe the lack of attachment for the characters plays a role against it's popularity.
