Stephan Bentvelzen Just quoting the most Disturbing part of the Fermi Paradox. On top of that if you take that thinking a bit further Each alein race asuming they communicate will have vastly defrient immages of piece and happiness. Most being incomparable with the human view. This will inevitably lead to conflict. Alien races hoping to survive has to establish it self as an authority with the power to enforce its own interests or parish at the interests of others. #UnpopularOpinnion
I love these episodes, because they're more "raw" and relatable. I find the topics more entertaining and shareable with friends in future conversation. Whatever the topic may be!
Since we are here. And life forms in the harshest environments of this planet, ie- Hot tar, Radio active waste, Miles under the earth, In boiling water. The tardigrade, or waterbear, is an organism that can survive in the vacuum of space. So i think its kind of obvious that there is life else where. With billions of galaxies, and stars, We may never know
You guys should make this into a podcast so we can listen to it offline. For example get it on iTunes as a podcast so we can put it on our iPhones/iPods and listen to it when we're out and about
I think the solution to the fermi paradox could be as simple as that we haven't scanned enough frequencies of enough areas of space at a high enough rate yet in order to make the chances of detecting signals probable, although in the near future I think as we create more and more radio telescopes and develop technology, we'll eventually surpass the 50% mark of probability and then it'll be just a matter of time.
Actually, the Drake Equation, in it's last set of criteria, does extrapolate the length of time during which an intelligent, technologically-sophisticated civilization will survive, and be capable of communicating across interstellar distances. My own reasoning for why we don't hear a constant stream of radio transmissions being broadcast across the galaxy is very simple: They don't bother with radio transmissions. For a spacefaring civilization to span interstellar distances, it needs two things: FTL travel, and superluminal communications. We have no capability to detect, intercept, and decode a form of communication which sidesteps the current laws of physics, as we understand them. So, until we can both transmit and receive such forms of communications, we will continue to hear a deafening silence from the cosmos.
***** My thoughts, precisely. I certainly didn't intend for my comment to be interpreted as a criticism of TDE...It was, and remains, a brilliantly conceived thought experiment and model by which to calculate, and make an educated guess as to how common intelligent, technologically sophisticated species develop into a detectable civilization. I'm just always a bit surprised how rarely, if ever, my earlier contention is mentioned by astrophysicists and those who search for these illusive signals. I suppose it's because FTL travel and superluminal communications are both so speculative as to fall outside the parameters of Hard Science.
***** Well, who was it who said that any sufficiently advanced technology would appear to a less developed society as magic? I'm certain I heard that somewhere...
Really really interesting topic this week. The general belief is that it does exist some form of life in Jupiter's satellite Europa or Saturn's Enceladus deep surfaces. Like some sort of hydrothermal vent, which doesn't need the Sun's light, but that's pretty much it. NASA has planned a mission to send robotic probes in Europa but not earlier than the 2020s.
Thanks for the view. Personally I think Aliens have been visiting earth for hundreds of millions of years, treating it like a petri dish. What I would like to know now is what was that earth sized object sucking plasma out of the sun? A cloaked, movable planet sized object capable of withstanding the force of the sun at that range. Hopefully they are good guys.
Awesome topic for this week trace Keep it up. I loved this channel and my favourite topic was sleep Can u make some vids about Neptune or moon or internet or youtube
You keep talking about the problems with the Drake Equation, but it's intended to be more a thought experiment than a mathematic certainty. Still, great conversation! :-)
I'm so excited about this! :D My favorite topic! Please talk about the Jupiter Ascending's theory, that we are created by a highly developed species (and like for example in the Prometheus, and other films). What do you think? Are they dont contact with us becouse we don't worth the energy, or are we in a blockade, so no one can come there (like in Star Trek Darkness), becouse of universal laws? :D and Please next time make the sound next time mono. Stereo at this case is wery ear hurting (especially with a headphone). TestTube Plus is an awesome show, it's make my day better :)
The question isn't whether they exist or not (they probably do), the question is what they're actually like. Chances are that there are several technologically advanced civilisations in our galaxy, we just need to hope that any of them which find us are nice and not too fond of war.
100 earthlike planets in our galaxy for every grain of sand on earth? Impossible. There are about seven quintillion (7.5x10^18) grains of sand on earth, and estimates vary but say that we have about 100 billion stars in our galaxy, with some estimates putting the number closer to 400 billion stars. There is no way there are 100 earthlike planets in just our galaxy for every grain of sand, even if you assumed that the upper estimate of 400 billion stars in our galaxy was true, and assume that each star had 100 planets, earthlike or otherwise, that would put the number of planets in our galaxy, earthlike or otherwise, at just 40 trillion. Last time I checked 7 quintillion was much, much bigger than 40 trillion. Trace, are you sure that the estimate you read off didn't say that there were 100 earthlike planets for every grain of sand on earth in our galaxy cluster, supercluster, local group or universe?
Hey Trace - your t-shirt got obsoleted just after you posted this - you'll need to add oganesson to your nobility collection ;-) (Og, Z=118, officially recognized Dec. 2015.) Fred
"There are 100 earth-like planets, in our galaxy, for every grain of sand on every beach and sandbox in the world" -- I think they meant in the observable universe. I looked up estimates, and there are more like 8.8 billion earth-like planets in our galaxy.
Soooo guy's I was thinking of starting this project I'm gonna call Xcom, it has a little bit to do with aliens but I think it may need a fair amount of funding.
It's funny how people associate life with being on Earth-like planets when if certain kinds of microbes and things like tardigrades evolved beyond their current state they could very well become more noticeable. Not to mention that apparently some people think that if there were aliens that they have an obligation to contact us when we haven't put a huge effort on space exploration and such.
Constructive criticism: mic,pop filter and arms are a bit invasive on screen and hide face a bit in my opinion take this how you will. and great vid, with very interesting topic
TestTube Plus can you please make a video explaining the whole the 10% of our brain story?? I really thought that was true but then I say the 5 senses video where you stated firmly that we do not use 10% of our brain. Is there any chance that you might be wrong?
While 20 different alien species may be enough for a TV series, how you gonna get in touch with their agents? Something tells me Trace hasn't entirely thought this through.
Why do we search for aliens in planets that have similar environment like Earth? Another race of species in another planet in another solar system in another galaxy might require different things to survive. And life there might even have started in another way. And, what is comfortable for us might not be comfortable for them, and vice versa.
You're probably going to cover this in the next video but even if there are aliens they and us would have to have technology to go faster than the speed of light. A FTL engine would have exist. The distance between stars is just too vast! The closest star is over 4 light years away and in my opinion anything past a 4 year journey through space seems too risky. Not that sending colonies of humans is a good survival method but assuming we're still using earth there wouldn't be the need to make such a journey.
There's life everywhere, even in our solar system. Some are made out of gas form, fire form, all kinds of forms. Life doesn't just consist of our minerals, our our genes. Life is everywhere and anywhere.
I could totally see the US government intercepting an extraterrestrial radio signal claiming to represent all of Earth's people and making the aliens never contact us again, then covering it up.
Our civilization should of found at least alien organisms by now. Where is the urgency when it comes to one of the greatest questions of mankind; "Are We Alone"?
Bobby Harper given how many types of life might theoretically exist, they might not be able to metabolize us, or they’re probably to smart to eat random sentient life with nuclear weapons on a mysterious planet with mysterious life they know nothing about.
My equation is proven to be right 100% of the time (I did this myself) I deserve all credit for this equation N = number of intelligent civilizations in the universe N = ... N =N (MIND BLOWN) And nobody can say wrong because it's right
RRGeada Agreed. At the very least it kind of indicates that space travel or faster than light communication will never be easy... which is a bit of a bummer to my inner sci- fy geek :(
its so amazing to think of other earth like planets and similar life forms, but the goldilock zone that we say is what we consider the right conditions. what if, suppose the conditions in Jupiter is the habitable land for some other kind of life froms. we know Jupiter dosent have life as of now, but similar type planets in other star systems, and galaxies can have life forms. so is the search for goldilocks zone the right path?
Very interesting video but it makes a mistake which seems to be common on these debates. Namely the idea that if there are lots of planets then there must be intelligent life elsewhere. The fact is to calculate the odds of something you need two things, the variables which dictate the chance of a thing happening and the numbers of opportunities for it to happen. For example the odds of a coin landing heads up is (as close as makes no difference) 50/50. So if we throw a coin three times we know that there is a 1 in 8 chance of getting no heads show up. To calculate the chance of intelligent life we need to know not only the number of planets but also the chance of life occurring at all and the chance of it evolving intelligence. There may be hundreds of millions of planets in our galaxy alone but if the chance of intelligent life evolving even once on those planets is many times greater than this then it is suprising we are here let alone any other species. The fact is we do not have enough information to even begin to calculate the chance of life existing outside earth yet.
The way our technology is advancing I say within the next 50-100 years we will find life on other plants even if it is microscopic. With as vast as the universe is we can not believe that we are the one and only galaxy and planet with life on it. I can only hope that we find life on other planets while I am still alive.
If the universe is infinitely large and infinitely expanding, doesn't that mean by default, that at some point the perfect circumstances for life will be replicated again. I think I heard once that having the perfect circumstances for life is liking rolling a football field of dice and having them all land on 1. Well, if you have infinite attempts, then you will have infinite successes, even if the successes are virtually zero compared to the number of failures.
How come its not possible for other civilisations to not live in other conditions as opposed to Earth, according to science? I asked my science teacher in school this question and I basically got laughed at, is it possible that I'm thinking could theoretically be true? Or IS true?
+Aaron Leonard They have found flowing water on mars and we've had life on earth for 540 million years with a fossil record to prove it. So when we find dinosaur fossils on mars who'll be laughing. I know what your shit teacher will scream that they are dead like the fossilised worms they found because i asked a bible thumper and he exploded into a narcissitic rage which is all they know.
+Aaron Leonard They have found flowing water on the surface of mars which is not much different to earth in the pre triassic era and we havent sent robots into the caves to explore the inside world of mars. They have discovered life in toxic caves in mexico and animals adapted in chernobyl to radiation so why not?
Here's something to think about. We are such social creatures that we want to find other life, we yearn for that need for interaction to be met. But what if there are no other civilizations? Since the beginning of time there always has to be a first to everything. What if we turn out to be the first species to evolve to this step? An arrogant thought but what if? We would be the caretakers of the galaxy, the forerunners to travel the stars and help the next species ascend into civilization...Yep :|
life has endless forms and can exist everywhere and can do anything with enough time of natural selection there are no equation that can say how many there are because there are to many posible answers
We look for life on a planet which has the same building blocks as our planet do,, but life might evolve in different enviorments than it has on our planet. If we found intelligent life on a planet exactly like our planet then the lifeform on said planet would be very simular to us. If "they" do have a diffrent enviorment, "they" will have diffrent technology (since "they've" socially evolved diffrently than our society then "their" technology would not match our own) than we do and communicate differently than we do, maybe "they" have tried to contact us, but we lacked the sufficient technolgy or have diffrent technology than "they" do. Or maybe "they" are so far ahead of us that "they" look at us like we're still apes or ants perhaps. The "Mass effect" explanition is if the latter is the cause, the most plausible for "them" not contacting us. Where planets with intelligent life are left alone untill they reach the milestone of civilization; which in spaceage - colonisation/exploration therms would be warpdrive. Or maybe we're the civilization which is furthest ahead in technology.
I don't understand why this assumption that aliens would be further in evolution / scientific development than us? For all we know we could be the MOST intelligent life for in the universe who even got it out of our own atmosphere. There could be planets of ordinary anjmals. Or life form equivalent to neanthetals. Think about it, if we ever got out there, would humans really not poke their nose into another life form's business to educate / colonize them? We do love to instill our culture into others...
We're aliens too to other aliens. And maybe other aliens cant contact us because their technology is not as advanced as us yet or they might not have the same intelligence level that could build the same things as us. They might just be like other animals here in Earth. I think we, humans, are a very rare group of animals that can think beyond the box. It would be surprising to see other aliens with the same intelligence level as us or maybe higher.
I believe that aliens do exist because we can't be possibly the only lifeforms in the whole universe because the universe is beyond humongous. Its infinite and it keeps getting bigger by the moment. Its not possible for there not to any planets that don't have a good condition for life to exist. If we were ever to be advanced enough to travel to other galaxies, we would be the aliens to another planet that may have life.
great topic. I could listen to you guys for hours :-)

What do you want to be when you grow up? 'Cause you seem very intelligent.
I think the fermi paradox isn't really a paradox because what if they DO have the technology but still believe in gods or a more powerful species
I think that the best common sense argument is that the universe never does one of anything, so it is likely there are other lifeforms.

Why do we need aliens? I mean we are not alone. we are 7 Billion people thats pretty amazing.

What would aliens could speak about with infants?
Is there anything in these videos on Extra-Denominational beings?
There has to be more than 100000 in just our galaxy alone !!!
left right ear podcast
There is evidence of alien existence, HOWEVER, contacting them may be a bad idea as some may not take humans so good
Man I'll never get abducted with numbers like these!
How come its not possible for other civilisations to not live in other conditions as opposed to Earth, according to science? I asked my science teacher in school this question and I basically got laughed at, is it possible that I'm thinking could theoretically be true? Or IS true?
nowadays it all depends on what you believe on. here is my tip for you: when you research any kind of theory, haters gunna hate. k peace :D
whats your physical proof? now your just going to say opinions
The next 20, 50 even 100 years as our technology advances it will be a very interesting for time for science and astronomy!!
Please talk about the dark knight satellite
Here's something to think about. We are such social creatures that we want to find other life, we yearn for that need for interaction to be met. But what if there are no other civilizations? Since the beginning of time there always has to be a first to everything. What if we turn out to be the first species to evolve to this step? An arrogant thought but what if? We would be the caretakers of the galaxy, the forerunners to travel the stars and help the next species ascend into civilization...Yep :|
No way where alone I completely agree
I think if aliens existed they would probably look similar to humans
life has endless forms and can exist everywhere and can do anything with enough time of natural selection there are no equation that can say how many there are because there are to many posible answers
Oh it looks like this PointlessGesture guy will be in all these episode :@
I don't understand why this assumption that aliens would be further in evolution / scientific development than us? For all we know we could be the MOST intelligent life for in the universe who even got it out of our own atmosphere. There could be planets of ordinary anjmals. Or life form equivalent to neanthetals. Think about it, if we ever got out there, would humans really not poke their nose into another life form's business to educate / colonize them? We do love to instill our culture into others...
You are NOT ALONE
So I can keep hoping that somewhere out there pokemon exist? :D
