Wish I could've seen trains from all those years ago during their prime. I'm only 26 and am fascinated by how primitive 1st and 2nd generation diesels are compared to today's modern power, yet they still managed to get the job done. Those EMDs, ALCOs, and GEs put on one heck of a show compared to what we have now! Sure modern diesels look and sound amazing, but don't smoke or roar like they used to. You know an SD40-2 is leading a train when you can hear it from 2 miles away. Sometimes you'll get that with a GEVO, AC4400CW, SD70MAC, or SD70ACe, but it isn't the same.
Wow, I bet you're one of the first people to EVER watch a train. You must be a god or something. True legend, man of men, the ORIGINAL train watcher. You have graced us with your presents here on these youtube comments.
As a train lover myself, I fell in love with trains when I was 3-4 years old and now as a 15 year old, I’m still railfanning, Very exciting hobby for all :)
If theres one thing that excites us more than anything else in our lives its trains. Ive grown up with trains all my life. Railfanning is not only a hobby but a lifestyle
They're big, beautiful, powerful machines built and operated by men and women who take pride and care into their work. What is there to hate about them except for the noise when you're trying to sleep? But hey, if you can't tolerate it, don't live next to the tracks. Although I live near railroad tracks (El Paso, TX near the UP Sunset Route), the only time I get bothered is when an AC4400CW, SD70M, or SD40-2 with an incredibly loud K3LA blasts through at 3AM. But hey, I work third-shift, so I can't complain too much!
Trains back in 1996 were nice, now the newer locomotives aren’t as nostalgic as the older ones, but I get to see trains every day, seeing how I live walking distance away from my local VRE train station.
Now everything's nothing but GE I wish RRS would mix up the motive power regardless of them meeting environmental standards older units don't pollute any more than cars and trucks.
Will say tho, those OG painted Union Pacific Dash-9, Ac4400cw, and Ac6000cws with the tiny shield are starting to become nostalgic, sucks all of them are getting repainted now, don't even get me started on the patched units😭
Chicago engineers have a genius sense of humor especially in the homevideos from the 80s and 90s when certain railroad employees snuck a VHS cam in the cab. When asked about travel in Chicago and what they think of it. Some would say because Chicago- *pulls train horn lever* is a city of- *keeps blowing the horn* and Thats that.." The guy with the camera was just losin' it with laughter.
I just photograph/film and skip the autistic circlejerking about tech specs. Guys that go on about muh GEMD GP70spade are such annoying losers to be around.
I love freight trains since I was a kid back in late 80's see the old Southern Pacific in Southern California near Alhambra Sub and became a hard railfanner in 2016 seeing BNSF at Cajon Sub in the high desert. I met other railfanners on RUclips and one especially in the high desert close to me. I have a good friend that picks me up, go watch and film trains all day and after that then go home. I have another friend that comes from far away to the high desert to photograph trains with us. I remember he said this "How can you share your hobby with someone if you have nobody to share with" it's true I had no one to share my train hobby for a while. Also I have another friend that hangs out with me watching and filming trains as well and he loves the high desert especially we have BNSF mostly and UP sometimes, he has a lot of knowledge about the trains as well, he been my friend for almost 2 years. But now I have new friends because of my train hobby and knowledge.
Railfan from Knoxville Tennessee here, I live 5 miles away from a NS mainline and every week about 2 times I will go with my grandma and see trains. It’s fun and I love it
@@maxwilson7001 if you wanna eat and see trains at the same time, there’s a restaurant called melting pot and you can see one of Norfolk southerns train yards out the windows
In my years of railfanning, my best experience was riding the last ever service operated by the MTR Metro Cammell EMU (AC), commonly called as the MLR, an EMU based on the class 317 in UK.
Hobbies related to railfanning: Fire Buffing: Taking photos and videos of fire trucks, police cars, and ambulances. (a lot of people who do this want to be firefighters themselves) Plane spotting: Taking photos and videos of places. Storm Chasing: Photos and videos of severe weather.
William K Bolan - CapitolDistrictRailfan96 here. Trains are my life and something about them over take me and I can't help but be right there to catch them on camera. It is a hobby, it is a way of life and it is a hell of a good passion!
Really great pice, thanks for sharing, I do really love it aswell, but only about 10-20 trains a day which is great! You got some rare stuff that would be on my line!
I wish they had mentioned two things in the report: never trespass on railroad property, and railfans have the constitutional right to pursue their hobby.
Railfanning is pretty much a scavenger hunt when you come across locomotives and freight cars that either: 1. Continue to wear the corporate colors and logos of previous railroads that have since been acquired by larger systems (such as Union Pacific and some of its acquisitions like Southern Pacific, Missouri Pacific, Chicago and North Western, among others) 2. Not just far away from home rails (such as when either East Coast railroads CSX or Norfolk Southern showing up on either BNSF or Union Pacific in the west), but also out of their country (such as Canadian National or Ferromex) 3. Were built before the 90's and is rarely used by the major companies.
This is a really nice piece. Thanks for sharing David's story (and many others' personal stories) of why we love trains.
Thank you for your service
