It's finally time to crack open up that hulking mystery at the back of the machine: the rear roller.
Start by removing the bearing cups and bearings but be gentle with the pressed bearing cups (00:00:39).
The shaft clamps come off next by firstly loosening the lock nut and then backing out the single bolt (00:02:22). Make sure the bolt is well back to avoid damaging the shaft.
The roller halves can now be removed from the roller shaft (00:07:03). Inside each roller half you'll find three pawls (which aren't secured, so don't lose them!).
Next comes the ratchet box from each roller half (00:09:51). Start by backing out the three bolts securing the ratchet box to the roller drum itself. It's quite likely the ratchet box will be rusted to the drum. Go easy. Be gentle. I used a 3-in-1 penetrating oil in combination with WD-40 and eventually bit of rust converter (Ranex) to get these ones moving. My preferred approach involves using the two large holes at the opposite end of the drum to bang the ratchet box out, being sure to focus your efforts on the thicker centre portion of the ratchet box rather than the spokes. A puller setup may also work for you.
If your mower has a counterweight (14" and 20" machines), you'll need to free up the counterweight before having access to the back holes (00:10:44).

About me and this channel: I'm Michael, a homeowner and aspiring lawn addict. I make these videos to share as much as I can, as best I can, from my recent experience rebuilding two Scott Bonnar 45 mowers. Although I'm a passionate wood worker and ex-IT guy, I have zero mechanical experience. I'm no expert on these subjects but I learn by sharing and it encourages me to grow a better lawn and build a better mower if I know you're watching!
