I’ve had M3’s, AMG Mercs - and whilst the S8 was a touch quiet, and impossible to find a space to park it in, it was unbelievably fast. And that was the older 520bhp version. On a driving day in mixed conditions with a Ferrari F12 and a MacLaren, neither of them were able to pull away from S8 by much - through corners, on straights - the S8 is a beast. A reasonable review but you did not say how well they have nailed the niche concept relative to their competitors! Audi is way a head of its competitors in terms technologies. In fact, the hot v configuration on the German turbo V8, is AUDI tech.
I couldn't imagine buying one of these things new (the depreciation is almost vertical) but surely if you're spending £100k, you really want to feel special and a little bit different as opposed to merely anonymous.
The special in the likes of the S8 comes from owning and driving the car not so much for showing off to the public. It is suppose to be an understated high end luxury car rather than a shouty sharp looking monster. When you get older these types of cars tend to appeal to you more. I currently drive a Lincoln Continental and it really goes unnoticed but is fantastic to own and drive. When you buy cars and own them for a decade the depreciation simply has no meaning as all older cars are cheaper.
Thanks for a great review. Impressive vehicle. I appreciate your honest perspectives. (From Canada where 4WD is something most people consider (even in classic saloon form)).
Congratulations! You presented the problems very well. The gearbox does not synchronize with the engine, it changes gears badly. Otherwise it is a beautiful car. But for the gearbox, I'll sell it.
The trouble with a car like this is that I used to think “That will be a good buy when it’s ten years old.” A spaceship of a car it is, but all that technology will mean it be never be possible for a ‘middle earner’ to own due to ‘plug and play’ maintenance costs. I’ve got an S8 D2, and that never really costs too much
Long story short, the point of this car is to be relaxing and fast at the same time, if this is what you are looking for. If not, you can go berzerk in RS6 or even if BMW if it suits you. There is a car for everyone.
Nice job here and you hit on the true downside of the car. It is very fast, but too big and unengaging to enjoy that speed. I had a 2017 S8 and a 2017 911 S. I have no doubt the S8 was faster in a straight line, but just too big to really get much driving pleasure out of it. Not comparing to the 911 for driving, but just that there wasn't enough driver fun to keep it.
Having owned most of the S8 models including mk1 D2 Facelift D2 and currently the D3 S8, these are great cars and i much prefer them over the equivalent mercs! However apart from the interiors and luxury getting better the actual design of the vehicles has gone backwards, the D2 and D3 were great designs and very handsome cars then the D4 was less so and more plain and this is even worst!! But no doubt a Great car none the less!!
I also owned a D2 facelift and D3. I'm with you, in my opinion these are the greatest S8's. The D3 for its engine but given a choice now would quite possibly pick the D2. Still think even today the design is absolutely superb.
@@Mikesea777 Yes it's one of the most handsome large saloons ever made in my opinion, I actually loved them soo much that I had 3 at the same time, one green pre facelift and 2 facelift d2 s8s one also green and one silver, my silver one was decatted lowered and had the 20" Gallardo alloys fitted and I owned that for about 5 or 6 years before I part exd it for my current 2006 d3.
Nice review sir but I’m surprised car companies are still bringing out big petrol engine cars like this with the likes of Tesla around and the fact that in less than nine years time you won’t be able to buy a new petrol or diesel car perhaps they are just using up existing engines
Not sure these are really aimed at private owners as new purchases, but as a mile muncher for a company exec they are spot on; I’d love an s8 as my commuter barge and would consider one following a couple of years of the previous owner running it in for me; but the bork factor, a consideration when buying any old RS, M or AMG model puts me off. Not sure about owning one in this shade of ‘dysentery brown’ either... 🤢. Edit: now I’m on autotrader 🙄
I think I get the whole touch-screen thing in this. HVAC controls in a luxury car are an opportunity to differentiate, which is what Bentley does with its organ stops and knurled knobs. Audi can't do that though because then they'd be stepping on Bentley's toes (VW group). No excuse for Mercedes with the new S-Class however, which is what the S8 will be cross-shopped with. In this segment I'd also be looking at the Lexus LS.

Perhaps not the best colour choice but, I actually kind like the relatively discreet look of the car. In many ways its like what the RS6 USED to be - Beefy but subtle, and very, very quick. I won't attract all the wrong kinds of attention, unlike the current RS6/RS7 which are brash to the point of being tacky. But geez 2.2 tonnes is bloody heavy!

Also that gapping grill in the front just doesn't work on it. Not sure how it works on other Audi models looks wise, but looks totally awful on this. A good flying spur alternative I guess.
Hey James, could you insert footage of the speedo in your videos? Because when you say: "allow me to demonstrate" and then you floor it, it's hard to get any feel for the speed of the car. Love the videos otherwise
This car is a clear example of a design tendency that I profoundly hate, which I would describe as "no big wheels, no looker". At a first glance, I would have said that the wheels where 18", which is sizeable enough, but 20", and basically looking like milk bottle caps? That is just not right. Does the automotive industry want that badly to sell bigger, fatter tyres? I guess so... For comparison, just look at the Tesla Model S (before the latest refresh; I'm not a fan of the new design) with its base 19" wheels. Those wheels fit the shape perfectly in my opinion, to the extent that I find the optional 21" to be too big for it. But on this car, not only do the 20" look bad, the sidewall is also very small, which in turn means that the wheels themselves are quite prone to damage... Again, contrast that with the Model S. Sorry, but Audi has missed the mark aesthetically, as far as I'm concerned.
....Is Very Fast. But It Is Very Expensive. ....£170,000 here in Au 🥺 Here these are lease and business expense claim only. Depreciates at something approaching the speed of sound.
Who is the target buyer for this car? Family man RS6 younger person RS7 young family man RS5 business owner ,anything he fancies company director, a big EV and pocket the BIK ??
Oh dear. The Audi photocopier has been set to "120%" and the S6 placed on the scanner bed then. I wish I could get excited about thier products, but I just can't. They're all such humdrum copies of each other. Even the S7 has the same front end as the S6, with only the rear being it's saving grace. Then again, I guess those with the prestige, money and taste of old that powered the Luxo-barge 90's and 2000's are all in Range Rovers, Cayennes and Teslas now. I'd still be going for a Jag if I wanted a big exec motor, but I suspect that puts me in the minority.
I'd choose this over the merc or bmw. Don't like the horrid grill on the bmw and I just don't like the look of the s-class (don't really care for any merc to be honest)
Sorry but the looks are anemic, the later series D4 S8 was nigh on perfect especially the "plus" version with a crazy 605 bhp. And why all the screens audi? Id have to drive it with a micro fibre cloth on hand as my ocd would go into overdrive. Sorry I'll stick with my 7 series until my D4 S8 fund improves.

Otherwise it is a beautiful car. But for the gearbox, I'll sell it.
2:33 cheeky robin by the back wheel!
Oooozing to be the next James May this guy
If it’s good enough for Jason Statham then it’s good enough for me 😀
Having owned most of the S8 models including mk1 D2 Facelift D2 and currently the D3 S8, these are great cars and i much prefer them over the equivalent mercs!
But what colour is the boat house at Hereford? Great movie for car chases. Thanks.
Not that it's a competitor,, but I'd be really keen on your take on the M550i
Nice review sir but I’m surprised car companies are still bringing out big petrol engine cars like this with the likes of Tesla around and the fact that in less than nine years time you won’t be able to buy a new petrol or diesel car perhaps they are just using up existing engines
A very interesting perspective. I find the S6 incredibly alluring, however I'd still rather have an RS6
Great video James. Thanks for your excellent content. One upside to S8s...you can find them superrr cheap used 😁.
Wow nice car and that but when can you do more Saab reviews?
When I get offered more SAABs
@@JayEmmOnCars so how it works is you have to be offered them? You don’t go out hunting? I’m excited to see someone offer you a TX or a 9-5 Turbo6 XWD or a Viggen or something cool
@@lordmartinofleithandcuddy6541 no, much better when people come to me
@@JayEmmOnCars where in England are you? I’ll see if anyone on the Saab groups is nearby with anything cool
Those UK verry small B-roads are fun for lil rally cars. But literally england is full of it I guess?? Roads in the Netherlands are so much better imo
While the S8 can be fun to drive it is not the real intention of the car it is suppose to be a luxury car.
It's certainly a lovely car to look at - although, can you order it with privacy glass delete? Shame to spoil it with that bling.
Isn't the top of the line one the bulletproof a8?
It's good at everything it does and it should do
How does the S8 measure up to the BMW M550i
Perhaps not the best colour choice but, I actually kind like the relatively discreet look of the car. In many ways its like what the RS6 USED to be - Beefy but subtle, and very, very quick. I won't attract all the wrong kinds of attention, unlike the current RS6/RS7 which are brash to the point of being tacky. But geez 2.2 tonnes is bloody heavy!
Get a 2017/18 S8 plus, looks and sounds better plus faster and cheaper.
JayM. Sounds like the S8 has arrived from the steam punk era of Auto Union ! Not sure who owners are of this barge. Maybe limo' for a track as pace car ? V.
Well it sounds nice for a modern car with (presumably) PPFs. 👍
Perfect cannonball car
That trunk could hold a whole lot of extra fuel.
RONIN - need I say more. :)
Everyone's your brother till the rent comes due
Flawed , but I still love it ,great review 👍
Can you drive it through rivers like on the transporter
Can you review the top trim of this car.
Could you do a review of the audi A6 please
Previous gen outshines this
I've always liked the S8 models. But I can't afford one.
There are plenty of other nice cars that are a lot cheaper it really depends on what end of the world you are living.
@@bighands69 True, I located a 2012 Mercedes S Class today for $21k. Also found a 09 Quattroporte for $24k. Having a look at those today

Volvo build stunning cars. If you are in America Lincoln and Cadillac build really nice cars as well for half the price.
It is sad that Buick stop making cars.
When did you change shirts, just asking?
Almost had a bit of raspberry jam back there
The old V10 was an absolute weapon 👍
My Mate kept up with me in my F430 through the lanes 🤪
Such a cracking wagon 🙌
I had one and it really wasn't. It did sound good, though.
🤣🤣🤣 I’m sure it’s sufficiently fast .. within the speed limit
That's not accidental

Epic intro
The mirrors are plastic actually. They are aluminium “look”.
@marcus price exactly. What a cheek for that money
A car like that with its suspension system it will not matter about the tyre's as much.
You cannot get cooler than an audi s8
Laughs in Zagato
@@RichardEnglander I'd like to see you get a zagato for 5k in 10 years...

Who’s sick of the velar ad!!!!

Here these are lease and business expense claim only. Depreciates at something approaching the speed of sound.
The last A8 platform. One more facelift in 2023 and the A8 is history.
Who is the target buyer for this car?
Family man RS6
younger person RS7
young family man RS5
business owner ,anything he fancies
company director, a big EV and pocket the BIK

The temptation to de-badge
Ronin pure!
Looking like some 2009 Lincoln sedan
These are the fastest cars on the Autobahn...all in that colour, super black windows and nailed on a 150mph cruise....spot the
