Lowkey this bedroom makeover was mad stressful, but in the end it turned out to be so vibey! I really dug into the cave vibes of this space and made it into a cozy neutral mid century modern Scandinavian bedroom, including the comfiest mattress (thanks Birch!) and moody lighting. By painting half the room an off white colour, upcycling a thrifted dressed and DIYing a custom headboard complete with floating nightstands, this room really came together. Oh! I had another idea to stiffen the headboard - foam board insulation comes in sheets like plywood. I have used it to create large "canvases" for art when staging a home.

Loved the content! But I’m noticing a change in the reveal shots with the moving quick footage. It’s a trend with a lit of other RUclips diy channels as well.. The shots pass by very fast and doesn’t allow my eye and mind to fully grasp the transformation of the room. So I am left with pretty shots but I still feel like I don’t really know how the new room looks. So less fast editing of clips wood be great :)

Yep, too fast. The video is over 30 minutes (longer than some episodes of TV), but the final reveal flies by as if they already regret some choices or something and that's not a confident message to send through editing after all the time and effort everyone spent making the video. Slow down the panning shots a little if you're proud of the results!
I was coming here to comment that very same thing. It was fast enough it even made me feel a little fuzzy-headed. For a design that we're really suppose to be taking it, it's not an editting trick that works well, I think.
This will probably get buried but I hope you see it!! For the old letters you framed in the room, I'd definitely recommend getting a mat so the letters aren't pressed up against the glass. Paper has a tendency to stick to glass over time, and with it being so fragile/old, I'd hate to have them damaged or stuck to the glass permanently. I'd recommend getting an acid-free mat that has a window exactly the size of the letters (or larger) and using either artist's tape or framing tape to secure it on just the top side, or if it's larger, mounting it to the back.
I thought she took photos/scanned the old letters. I don't think she would take pieces of the actual collection for her bedroom.
@@leetee3207 I'm not sure if she did, but I'd also recommend using copies, because the writing might fade from natural light exposure. Although, of course, there is not too much of that in the basement...
I came here to say just this! If those are originals and family heirlooms, take them to get framed when you can. They should be matted and archival mounts should be used as well as anti-uv glass. (Even if they're only in your basement for now, you may want to use them when you redecorate)

When you started with the cave room picture, I assumed you would paint that textured wall a sand or light ceramic pink shade. It would have made your headboard pop. Loved the dresser transformation!
That's my thoughts too, and what I'd do if it were my room, but it kinda doesn't match with the rest of her house.
I would like a little extra color on her headboard. Right now it just blends into the wall and disappears.

I thought that too... the "sand" light color is earthen and natural and would actually show the texture of that wall better ESPECIALLY behind the white headboard and white bedding and lamps ...
With living in a basement I HIGHLY recommend getting a dehumidifier. Especially with a shower down there, it will prevent mold which is SO important. Also setting hue lights to turn on every morning so it doesn’t feel like you’re waking up in the dark 😊
I have heated floors which really dries up any dampness. Also I do have my lights automatically turn on but i need to fix them because a) they’re too bright and b) they come on at 6am on weekends lol
TheSorryGirls mould prevention takes three things! Water>heat>ventilation
Make sure you have lots of ventilation, without it your heated floors will help mould growth rather than prevent it :o

@@TheSorryGirls We have concrete outer walls here in Germany and anything non waterproof I have ever tried to store next to those walls has gotten moldy. This makes me worried for your head board....
Maybe it's just me, but I feel like the textured "cave wall" behind the bed would look better in a slightly darker color. Nothing too dark, just maybe one shade darker than the 'Dove wing' paint on the lower section of the rest of the room?

For sure. The textured wall is already the accent wall but a different colour would definitely help to elevate the overall design.
If you’re into aromatherapy, some scents Spiders hate are citrus, eucalyptus, tea tree, and peppermint. 😉

This! I use a simple lavender mix that's just 3 drops of lavender oil, 1 tsp of dish liquid, and water. You can switch out the oil you like that they don't like. I never see spiders if I keep up on refreshing the spray around my apartment, but I know when it needs to be done because they come back quickly ;_;
I've also mopped my floor like this. It smells amazing, helps my mood, AND it's friendly to the spiders. Just be careful of what oils you use and if they're pet or kid-friendly when used that way.
There are bugs and rodents that I abhor.
The only spiders that I fear are brown recluse and tarantula size arachnids. Watch Charlotte's Web for Pete's sake
@@dy9278 Okay? She just had a lot of them in the basement living space and one safe way to keep them away without harming them is with specific natural scents. They'll still be around and totally fine, they'll just avoid areas you don't want them... like next to your bed lol.

I kept on getting bit by spiders (3 times in less than 36 hours) in an Airbnb, I put cinnamon powder everywhere and never ever saw (or felt😫) another spider again. I’m sure cinnamon essential oil works even better and it makes a house smell so goooood🤗

🤔The fact she struggled about elements of design in her own bedroom is so real & relatable. Creating something you actually wanna live with can be a bit tricky sometimes. Nice to know that even such a naturally gifted decorator has her doubts about some spaces. Great job!
Hey Kelsey, for me the headboard is lacking contrast rather than dimension. If you go back to your inspo photos at 2:37, the hotel design brought in warmth with beige/greige fabric rather than more white. That swap would highlight the textured feature wall and bring out the warm woods of the nightstands, especially since the warm flooring is now covered up with white rugs. I'd love to see you DIY a frame for the beveled mirror to bring in more of the streamlined wood lines from the inspo images!

Cardboard would honestly be a great material to use for the backing of the headboard. It would supply a decent amount of support, but still be flexible enough to get a good flush fit to the wall.
I kinda like the wrinkly texture though it mirrors the wall but in a softer way
I don’t love the two toned paint on the walls. The color is awesome, but the sharp line feels too harsh with the organic stone type wall the bed sits on. I completely agree with changing the mirror to the dresser wall. But overall I really love it, super cozy and unique. Definitely chic hotel vibes.

yeah, I noticed the up-lit edges of things in her cave inspiration images and was expecting to see that play into this basement room design. Then she accidentally kind of did it by putting a lamp on the floor. I love indirect up-lighting; it's usually flattering (makes people look youthful and glowy by filling in the shadowy parts of our faces that can make us look tired or saggy.) She could make the room look bigger without the rectangular mirror (which looks blocky and breaks up the minimalist flow) by using some soft edge lighting to illuminate the ceiling or accent wall texture.

I love how Becky is all earthy tones and neutrals and little bit of blue like the seventies, and Kelsey is like Black and Green and 'Gimme more plants' and just plain chic. 🥰

everything looks so nice and polished except for that headboard. i dont even think you need one with the stone wall being such a statement piece

A headboard would be nice if she wanted to sit up on her bed and not have the textured wall against her back. Though, I agree that the headboard she DIY'd looked out of place; I think a simple solution would be to swap out the fabric to something less wrinkly.
Walls like that hurt. Ive cut myself because the wall near my bed is textured.
I would like the headboard to be a slightly different color. It blends so well into the color on the wall that it disappears.

Try a piece of plywood mushed between two pieces of thinner foam, this way, the facing and backing are going to be soft and squishy, but the whole structure is going to maintain its shape better.

You could use cork for the head board. It’s light, you can mold it when wet, and it stable when dry.
Cork had been my new design element. I’ve used it for so many things.

For the textured wall behind the bed- I saw something in a coffee shop that I’ve been obsessed with lol. You can get maybe ten air plants and grab some white wall holders for them and disperse them over the wall. Cool, unique, spacious way to implement some green but also kind of acts like an art piece!
Please try using peppermint essential oils in your bedroom. When I lived in a basement it helped so much to keep spiders out.
kelsey, just thinking out loud - bringing those bed legs lower would totally achieve your goal. maybe just cut them off, or the way they are constructed allows them to come off? also, I think that tinted mirror will be bomb on that wall that reflects the hallway. it will visually DOUBLE the depth of the whole unit. you can still hang the arched mirror on the wall beside the bed, and kinda dress it up like a faux window? just sharing ideas!!!

As a museum collections person I just have to say that layering anything over/in front of your grandparents love letters will fade them unevenly, even in the low light of that room. Scooch that other photo frame over so it's just covering the mat instead of the letters themselves

When I lived in a basement, I lined the floor corners will clear, wall-safe scotch tape. It helped with the spiders!
That's a great idea. I use clear caulking around the baseboards and windows. It dries transparent and it keeps out spiders and roaches from the outdoors.

Or maybe even some chipboard (slightly more sturdy) for added stability?

Hi you could use an iron on interfacing fabric that will get rid of the wrinkles and provide stability. It won't be stiff but will allow for flexibility while maintaining the structure of the fabric and get rid of the wrinkles.
In Jamaica we call it pellon. I'm not sure what other names are used for other regions but it's a woven fabric that's sticky on one side when ironed on.

Love it! IMO the tinted mirror ruins the flow of the room and makes the room look smaller, and the headboard is too thin! I would also argue that a new bedframe in a matching wood to the nightstands would look great. Other than that it all looks gorgeous!

@@krystalcheena its a Canada post thing. You have to have a reason , like how in Kelsey's case she already paid duty once , so she doesn't need to pay on the exchange. Sometimes citing the product isn't available in Canada also works - but not too often.

My bedroom is also very dark, a little small, and painted grey. Living in a dark space is really taking a toll on my mood especially as winter gets closer (I live in SK). So, I watched your video 3 times and literally just painted samples on my walls to make a cozy cave like your room! In general, I love the design. However, I feel the headboard is a little insubstantial. It's not doing enough to justify being there. Maybe it's an issue with it not coming through in the video, but it just sort of blends into the wall behind it. Maybe if the wall behind it was a darker/tan color, like I've seen other people suggest, the headboard would look better.

I think there needs to be some more color on the bed side of the room. For the headboard, I'd go with a light green or gray or even bring back in some mauve. A light texture on the fabric if any at all. I was thinking maybe a thin sheet of a flexible plastic or foam might give you stability on the headboard without making it rigid like plywood would.
I think moving the large tinted mirror behind the dresser would be a great idea. I totally agree that it kind of chops things up with the look towards the bed.
I was also think she could add some vintage buttons on the headboard to give it texture and visual interest. My favorite was the dresser but I love everything ❤️

Spiders don't like a disturbed space. So the lazy option is get a robot vacuum and set it to vacuum multiple times a day.

The room overall is AMAZING, you did such a great job!!!! But i think the mirror would totaly look better with the dresser, maybe switch the artwork with the mirror, and u might have more use of the top of the dresser

☀️/🌚 In a basement, another mirror in that exact spot will help perfectly reflect some of the sparkle of natural light as well as her strategic💡lighting additions. Thought the XL frameless mirror was a good choice. It didn't visually weigh down the wall in any manner or detract from her charming cave.
I'm not a fan of a smokey mirror in general, but I do think it will work nicely above the chest with her 🖼artwork propped & layered against it. I'd enjoy the reflective aspects of this mirror there behind the art. (Smokey or not, I wouldn't want to stare @ myself fully in it when lounging or larking about.)
🌟Think Kelsey's done a marvelous job of merchandising this surface. 👍She fully understands scale & proportion. She treated the chest like a large shelf ledge -- & dressed it quite attractively w/her vignette.
For her, it's not like a kitchen counter that she needs to utilize as some prep or staging space. She clearly is not going to use it as a vanity💄surface. Plus, empty dresser top space for a messy & undisciplined person like myself is killer temptation to drop stuff that doesn't belong there.

You might also want to buy a large LED panel to simulate more daylight. There are a few fun videos online to diy these into looking like a window

Beautiful bedroom makeover, Kelsey! It's like a hotel room I need to stay in. I particularly loved the floating shelves, the EQ3 lamps, and the paint job on the dresser! Amazing job and can't wait to watch you finish off the rest of your house!
It looks good. I love how the headboard blends in and basically disappears.
I feel like you should change the colour of the headboard to something darker.

I definitely think you should move the tinted mirror to above the dresser. You want to think about the "picture" the mirror shows. Where it is now just shows a blank wall which doesn't add depth to the space, but above the dresser it will reflect your whole bed space, creating a beautiful "picture" and will also create the depth you are looking for. The space is beautiful!
I kinda feel like the headboard takes away from the feature wall, especially being so samey colour wise it just kind of blends in and blocks that gorgeous texture. Still love the cosy feel!

Kelsey's style is justtt different enough from mine that when I'm watching I'm like "ehhhh I don't know if I like that" but then when it all comes together I'm like 😍
love that you did with the bed and the textured wall really looks good with the lamp shadows.
Also spider hanging plates would look so dope on each side of bed hanging from ceiling growing around the room
String lights or warm led strips behind the headboard would light up that feature wall beautifully in a low light vibey way. The dresser turned out amazing! I love this series, thanks for bringing us along on the journey.
yes i totally agree! i think warm led hidden strips will just elevate the space and make it super cozy and very cave-like! the cool lighting is a little to harsh with all the whites.

My piece of mind: by my personal taste I feel you covered too much the floor with so many rugs, I believe the bed stands will pop a bit more with more floor revealed and the room would feel less busy. I would just keep the side wool rug and place where the big one is.
Re: tinted mirror, I planned a DIY with my mum and we took an old glass wood door and placed tinted mirrors where the glass used to be- it’s amazing now. It’s an idea to introduce more wood in the room and you can love the big mirror where the landing is, will help you get dressed.
I’ve seen comments re: LED and I agree with them, they can give you mood lighting if you feel it’s still dark.
Also having low ceilings you can direct light there from the ground.
Alternatively you could paint as well the stone wall with a paint that has a reflecting effect.
Are you going to get a door for the room? I picture it as a barn door..

really enjoyed this take on a basement cave bedroom! actually think the bed could do without/ with a different headboard. just think there’s too many textures going on with the wooden nightstands and cloth headboard that it steals away from that wall
