For the conversation around 49:00 about merging - I absolutely agree with you guys. Use the entire lane, then merge just before it ends. This applies to lanes ending normally as well, not just when they're closed for construction or accidents. If they wanted you to switch lanes a kilometre or two earlier, that's where they would've ended/closed the lane. There's a video (I believe from Half as Interesting) about the zipper merge and why it makes everything faster overall, even though the same number of cars are going through the merge point either way There's also a bridge in the city near me that has construction happening on it. There are signs that explicitly say "USE BOTH LANES", then another one farther ahead that says "BEGIN MERGING HERE". People don't listen, and still switch to the left lane way before. I listened to the signs, drove to the merge point, and merged into a perfect gap without needing to stop, instead of waiting 5+ minutes for the line of traffic to clear if I had switched when everybody else did A basic driver's training course should be mandatory as part of getting your license, and it needs to include both the zipper merge, and roundabouts/traffic circles. Nobody around here knows how either one works

The GT-R isn't a supercar, but it was designed to beat them. The thing was faster than the equivalent supercars of it's era but was a quarter of the price. I recall watching a documentary about the GT-R's development, and the lead designer said "Those who believe that a rear-engine layout and being lightweight is the only way to be fast are but amateurs".
"Supercar killer" is the best designation. Turbo S probably fits well under that category as well, along with Corvettes, SL65s, and some others that don't spring to mind.
There's so many factors that go into these classifications, but for 'supercar' I think you have to also consider the overall production output of the marque - Nissan could make the fastest car ever, but it will never be a true supercar because they produce nearly a million vehicles a year. Same with the Ford GT. There has to be an air of exotica and exclusivity about the overall brand for a model to be considered a true supercar..
@@Ben-rq5re I agree with the exotica and exclusivity points. They are the same reasons why the Porsche 911 isn't a supercar. So many have been made over the last 60 years. That being said, it doesn't make me want a GT-R any less lol
@@lucaduina2781 i don't know enough about the SL65 to comment on it, but Corvettes are not Supercar Killers, they're Supercar Wannabes: see the current generations mid-engine redesign of the entire platform, they did it because they couldn't get the performance out of the front engine platform and they want the Vette to be in that Supercar class (it never will be).

46:15 this bit about keeping cars in storage just to watch them depreciate resonates with why I feel the McLaren W1 isn't as impressive as it maybe ought to be. To me that car, being as limited as it is (399 only), reading that every single car in that series was sold-out on launch, knowing that they're being bought as interest farmers and not as drivable cars, makes the W1 feel far too exclusive to be cool or interesting to me.

The Franschoek Motor Museum in Cape Town has a silver Mclaren F1 with a high downforce kit. I walked into the hall that its parked in and it's just sitting across from a 288 GTO, F40, F50, and an Enzo. That place is a must visit for any petrol head in Cape Town.

Feel Ben's pain. My gearbox once stuffed itself on the motorway coming home just after a service. As it turns out filling the gearbox fluid up to max had washed metal shavings off the top, which then worked their way into the base of it and jammed it completely. Had to get towed back and spent weeks trying to find a new gearbox that would fit the car. Was very much a high to low moment in life. Out of work early, nice day so had the roof down, in the fast lane then bang stuck on the hard shoulder dreading the inevitable bill that was coming.

Cutting in from 3rd to 2nd lane, when the 3rd lane is coned off… There is an unknown location, between ‘3 miles back’ and the cones, where the 2nd lane becomes a queue. From this unknown location onwards to continue in the 3rd lane is considered by some to be queue jumping. Obviously in Britain we pride ourselves in our ability to queue and ‘queue jumpers’ will be frowned upon.
If you're looking for an X5 replacement, get an early ML series Mercedes with a V6 diesel. Quiet, quick, a lot of torque, very comfortable, great towing capacity and lots of space, and you can get them for about 1500 quid. Coupe, blue, auto. They also had a burgundy one, and one in another colour
Focus RS500 went for circa £110,000 the other week there up here in Scotland. Delivery mileage, “full service history” and water pump and timing belt done. For a car that hasn’t moved…
That's good to see. Perishable materials like rubber would need replacing regardless of if the car is driven and parts designed to move that don't move usually end up liking to not move anymore.
Reminds me of a Mat Watson observation on the F40: £300K new, ca. £3M now if you'd stored it. If you'd put that £300k in the S&P500 instead, you'd have £7M... The power of compounding...
Car types are like music genres. Great for briefing a basic understanding of the piece. But it's ignorant to not acknowledge the cross-overs. (pun not intended)
Question for you lads, when reading about installing a turbo kit I often see people talking about sparkplug gaps, specifically making the gap smaller. Why would you need to do that when turbo charging a car?
oooh the lottery question is a good one. F1 is really the correct answer. However, I'm also partial to the Koenigsegg One:1 and if it's just a low payout I could really really not decide because I'd want a 959, a 2.7RS and a 037 and I couldn't decide which I'd want more.
Other potential fun hobbies that you can get into on "the cheap" are computers & simracing; the gear you can buy for the latter ranges from just few tens € to a couple hundred or thousands & all the time you feel like you want to have something else, something better
Expensive hobbies: Mountain biking. It IS the most expensive thing in the world I think. It never ends either. Wouldn't have it any other way, love it.
Question for the forum: (I previously emailed this into autoalex email, and you touched on it in this episode) What is the general obsession between most car RUclipsrs with BMW as a brand? I basically impulse bought a e91 330d touring based on everyone loving BMWs and wanting to scratch the itch it created, and it turned into financial ruination. Why do BMW have SUCH a cult following, and why the obsession between all you guys? (Alex, Taylor etc included) Loving the podcast/vids, hope you can answer my question!
Forum Question: What is the mechanical difference between a turbo charged engine and a NA one? Could I, for example, change my NA Mk 2 MX-5 into a turbocharged one? What would need to do to ensure that it remained as reliable as it is now?
Conrods can be weaker on N/A cars. Valve train components too. Compression ratio is usually higher with N/A cars. ECU tune will be totally different and not suited for boost pressure. You could boost your MX5 with a turbo. You'd need good quality parts, to have it run reliably. I'd pay more for a good quality standalone ECU and a decent tune. Honestly, you can take it as far as your wallet allows. The key with a car being reliable is good thermal management. Keeping heat out of where it shouldn't be, and fluids where they should be.
Forum question here. Why do you need to replace the timing belt after it snaps or breaks? Like I’ve never understood what happens to the engine like why can’t you just put another one back on and be fine
Some engines are interference engines. If the timing belt snaps, the valves will hit the pistons and byebye engine. Some engines aren't interference, so you can just slap another belt on and go.
Just got round to this video and about the low mileage etc cars.. i have a 9k miles 2014 Corsa VXR Clubsport.. vought in 2019 and only done 100 miles since i got it and its parked not for value but purely because i have others tonuse and its basically museum condition 😂
I have a comment for you guys I have a Honda I changed the spark plugs recently after watching your video of you building your mystery bmw engien after you found broken spark plug ends it’s made me want to check mine😅😮 Soooo I did And I found a broken spark with no tip Is my car safe to use what shall I do next shall I turn it over and risk it all or do take the head off ??
Garaged cars for an investment seems weird to me too, but i'd love to see a Countach on the road these days. Obviously probably just needs a trip to Dubai.. but then i'd also be in Dubai. Saying that, I love my cars (diesels) and will be sad when they eventually stop existing. The dream is to have an engine exit exhaust diesel by 2035.
Its a long running thing thats become more of a joke to say about something minor where some sort of conspiracy is done by "big x" . big oil, big tobbaco, big pharma are ones people use un-ironically.
Question for the forum: Any advice for finding a water leak (as in rain) coming into the car? My 06 Suzuki Swift slowly leaks when it rains into the rear passenger footwell. I've sealed with silicone all the places I can think of it coming in but to no avail.
Forum question: How do you judge what kind of milage on a car is in good enough to buy and drive without much issues,? Is it completely dependent on the model/engine etc, or is there a general rule of thumb like "don't buy cars over 120k miles cause they'll break"?
Sometimes people buy cars then go away for a job for a long time (especially if they are in the military) and never drive their car except when they are back in town.
I recently found out the whole "don't change the oil on high mileage automatic transmissions" thing. That is just another great reason to never buy a slushbox automatic.
Q for next podcast. I am a lifelong car enthusiast, but more from a consumer/driver perspective. I have no idea how the things work but want to get more mechanically adept. What's step 1?
Love the podcast, you guys gennuinely love cars. I may be in the minority but other than thinking Tom Lenthal is absolutely amazing, I have zero interest in JLR vehicles. More JDM please, Juicebox crossover?
Ive got a question: So basically i was looking at a new car and saw that it can have a 1.6 or a 1.8 i4, how do manufacturers get more capacity out of their engines even with the same number of cylinders? And as a follow up how does the 1.8 make less power than the 1.6?
Just adding to what you guys were saying about the car hobby being the 'best worst' hobby. I think it's the fact that just everyday people use cars. Something that's your hobby is what someone else uses to get from A to B. Like Clarkson said on old Top Gear, if you have no interest in something, you're no good at it. So you go out for a chill evening drive after a long week and you get some prius driving 45 on an empty 60. It'd be like someone with no interest turning up to a golf range and just fucking about.
Forum question: Hey boys im going to pick up my first personal car (driven family cars). Im going 1200km to get it and then im driving back. My question is: what is the least amount of tools possible that you should bring for a sight unseen car that you have to drive home?

Love NFSU in the back ground it give me feels
The Huayra R at goodwood was a beast. Car of the weekend for me.
Theres a bloke that drives a Mk1 Focus RS around newbury all the time, convinced he dailies it.
Last i saw it, it was bloody pristine.
Reminds me of a Mat Watson observation on the F40: £300K new, ca. £3M now if you'd stored it. If you'd put that £300k in the S&P500 instead, you'd have £7M... The power of compounding...
To me, Countach is the #1 dream car. Followed by an F40 as a close second. and a DMC12 as a third. The only 3 cars i need.
So happy we've got a new sofa
People who can’t use a merge in turn when a lane closes should have their licenses removed.
Why would you need to do that when turbo charging a car?
its the best hobby (my mx5's ecu left me at work and need 3.5k rust repair work)
oooh the lottery question is a good one. F1 is really the correct answer. However, I'm also partial to the Koenigsegg One:1 and if it's just a low payout I could really really not decide because I'd want a 959, a 2.7RS and a 037 and I couldn't decide which I'd want more.
Seen the new owner of the fto posted on a couple of the groups I'm in. Looking forward to seeing the rebuild myself
36:25 -- do you remember the Italian swearbox on Top Gear? hahahaha
Want of the week - 1971 Plymouth Fury with a 440 (7.2 L) big block.
Fast (pre fuel crisis) land yacht
I don't understand how the fast sport back cayenne caught on even though, bmw did the same thing with the x6 m and everyone hated that body style.
Will got it spot on, the P1 is THE Prettiest (Modernish) car of all time
FORUM QUESTION: Does driving with your hand on the gear stick wear out the linkage or was my dad a stinking liar?
I think EngineeringExplained has also claimed this is a thing before
I think the answer is yes but so negligible that it'd be like saying don't put your foot on the pedals as they will wear down eventually
Forum Question: What is the mechanical difference between a turbo charged engine and a NA one? Could I, for example, change my NA Mk 2 MX-5 into a turbocharged one? What would need to do to ensure that it remained as reliable as it is now?
😂
Conrods can be weaker on N/A cars. Valve train components too. Compression ratio is usually higher with N/A cars. ECU tune will be totally different and not suited for boost pressure.
You could boost your MX5 with a turbo. You'd need good quality parts, to have it run reliably. I'd pay more for a good quality standalone ECU and a decent tune. Honestly, you can take it as far as your wallet allows. The key with a car being reliable is good thermal management. Keeping heat out of where it shouldn't be, and fluids where they should be.
I looked up the Merc 5cyl turbo diesel and a video came up "12 of the best sounding 5-cyl diesel engines". I had no idea they were that popular.
Think the Merc OM605 sounds good.. the OM606 is the 2jz of the diesel world 👌🏻👌🏻
Forum question here. Why do you need to replace the timing belt after it snaps or breaks? Like I’ve never understood what happens to the engine like why can’t you just put another one back on and be fine
Because it will lunch the engine in the process of snapping as it synchronises the rotation of the crankshaft and camshaft.
Some engines are interference engines. If the timing belt snaps, the valves will hit the pistons and byebye engine. Some engines aren't interference, so you can just slap another belt on and go.

I don't know Will, my Crocs have been known to get stuck in Sports mode
Just got round to this video and about the low mileage etc cars.. i have a 9k miles 2014 Corsa VXR Clubsport.. vought in 2019 and only done 100 miles since i got it and its parked not for value but purely because i have others tonuse and its basically museum condition 😂
about 10 years ago my mate wrote off his mk1 st doing 100+ on the motorway like a div. Never forgave him
Whaaaat a timing, Drivetribe just posted a video about the GT-R and its engine capable of 1000+HP, and now this podcast lol
I was thinking about a question for the show. Can y’all explain how Torque converter works in an automatic transmission. Thank you
Please put this podcast on Deezer too!
16:40 focus on the tv until the jump cut.
I have a comment for you guys I have a Honda I changed the spark plugs recently after watching your video of you building your mystery bmw engien after you found broken spark plug ends it’s made me want to check mine😅😮
Soooo I did
And I found a broken spark with no tip
Is my car safe to use what shall I do next shall I turn it over and risk it all or do take the head off ??
i could listen to yous two waffle for hours I feel like one of the boys lol
Garaged cars for an investment seems weird to me too, but i'd love to see a Countach on the road these days. Obviously probably just needs a trip to Dubai.. but then i'd also be in Dubai.
Saying that, I love my cars (diesels) and will be sad when they eventually stop existing. The dream is to have an engine exit exhaust diesel by 2035.
I thought will was going to hit the laptop on the floor the whole time 😫
Really random, but is the "big" joke related to that guy on tiktok that talks about big teflon? The stainless steel pan guy 😂😂
The new M2 looks good in that kind of nardon'tlikeit grey
59:24 “…with my mum”. 😂
Forum question:
How do you judge what kind of milage on a car is in good enough to buy and drive without much issues,? Is it completely dependent on the model/engine etc, or is there a general rule of thumb like "don't buy cars over 120k miles cause they'll break"?
9:35 if you guys have a show, I'll definitely be there! I'd love that!
Sometimes people buy cars then go away for a job for a long time (especially if they are in the military) and never drive their car except when they are back in town.
I recently found out the whole "don't change the oil on high mileage automatic transmissions" thing. That is just another great reason to never buy a slushbox automatic.
I have the sudden inexplicable urge to play Need For Speed Underground
Q for next podcast. I am a lifelong car enthusiast, but more from a consumer/driver perspective. I have no idea how the things work but want to get more mechanically adept. What's step 1?
Similar expensive and frustrating hobby is boats I’ve spent a fortune on my sailboat hahaha
Love the podcast, you guys gennuinely love cars. I may be in the minority but other than thinking Tom Lenthal is absolutely amazing, I have zero interest in JLR vehicles. More JDM please, Juicebox crossover?
Ive got a question:
So basically i was looking at a new car and saw that it can have a 1.6 or a 1.8 i4, how do manufacturers get more capacity out of their engines even with the same number of cylinders? And as a follow up how does the 1.8 make less power than the 1.6?
Blokes please buy some long microphone stands. Cracking podcast!
SKOL Vikings 🎉 (😅 Nice shirt Ben!)
Ive always said a z3m is a hatchback along with a scirocco
Just adding to what you guys were saying about the car hobby being the 'best worst' hobby. I think it's the fact that just everyday people use cars. Something that's your hobby is what someone else uses to get from A to B. Like Clarkson said on old Top Gear, if you have no interest in something, you're no good at it. So you go out for a chill evening drive after a long week and you get some prius driving 45 on an empty 60. It'd be like someone with no interest turning up to a golf range and just fucking about.
Cowderois had me in pieces 😂😂😂😂
Forum question: Hey boys im going to pick up my first personal car (driven family cars). Im going 1200km to get it and then im driving back. My question is: what is the least amount of tools possible that you should bring for a sight unseen car that you have to drive home?
Was the channel name Bottom Dead Center taken.
Literally 3 seconds in and in complete agreement with Edwin. I do not understand fast back 4x4's!!!
I was going to say go to lanzante workshop in petersfield they ALWAYS have an F1 and F1GTR on show
question for Will! I've got an st225 and its throwing an ESP code under boost? are you familiar to this being an ST fan?
