Achaemenid Persia, especially under Cyrus II, was a real bright spot in ancient history. At its best, Persia was practically the ideal of empire; there's a reason why Alexander and Julius Caesar both visited Cyrus' tomb to pay their respects. On top of unusually enlightened policy, the Persians' Zoroastrian religion shunned slavery for paid labor, something very few ancient cultures emphasized. Sure, they had their issues and sure some of the emperors, especially the later ones, were inept and cruel, but the Persian kings we hear about most (Cyrus, Darius, even Xerxes) were pretty enlightened rulers.
But then they built 3 factories and became the feared warmongering autocratic empire, wiping the Zulus off the face of the earth for their supply of Ivory.

For those whom are confused. Persia is a Greek word. It is what Alexander the Great called it, since Cyrus the Great came from a kingdom call Pars. From then on outside countries called it Persia. In 1935 the Persian government stated they prefer the native Farsi (Persian) name, Iran. But it wasn't until the fall of the kingdom in the 70's when maps changed it to Iran. I actually have a map from 1830 that marks Persia with a "(Iran)" as well. So, it wasn't the revolution that caused the name to be changed, but instead it has always been called Iran by native Farsi speakers.
Here's some elaboration on your points: Farsi is the Arabic word for what the Iranian's (used to) call their own language, Parsi, a term still used in India to refer to ethnic Persians. The Arabic language drops the 'P' in most of their words and names, Aleppo being the only exception that comes to my mind. Also, the name, Iran, as I understand, derives from what the Romans called the large area that now encompasses modern Iran and neighboring Afghanistan, Ariana. This is also where the term Aryan comes from (It literally means Iranian). So Persia is Greek, and Iran (Ariana) is Roman. Pars (which is now called Fars, thanks Arabia) would be the best non-foreign name for their lands. I don't know what the land was called in Aramaic though, the official language under the rule of Darius, or Dariush as he says it.
CrashHulkman Thanks for sharing. I knew about the Ariana name as well, but I believe that even though it was shown on Roman maps, that they got the names from the locals of Iran at that time.
Maxwell Garrison Yes. The borders of Iran do not represent the borders of the Persian language, but rather the political allegiance to what was the Persian Kingdom.

The Morning Song bird.. The song came from the poetry of the freedom from the oppression. Keep searching in google, and you will find the translation of the lyric. It is beautiful.
The Persian people are an Iranian people, who speak the modern Persian language, and closely akin Iranian dialects and languages. Their origins are traced to the ancient Iranian peoples, themselves part of the Indo-Iranian branch of the greater Indo-European peoples.
The term Persian translates to "from Persis" which is a region north of the Persian Gulf located in Pars, Iran. It was from this region that Cyrus the Great, the founder of the Achaemenid empire, united all other Iranian empires (such as the Medes), and expanded the Persian cultural and social influences by incorporating the Babylonian empire, and the Lydian empire. Although not the first Iranian empire, the Achaemenid empire is the first Persian empire well recognized by Greek and Persian historians for its massive cultural, military and social influences going as far as Athens, Egypt, and Libya.
Besides modern Iran (Persia), ethnic Persians are also found in Central Asia (Afghanistan, Tajikistan, Uzbekistan) where they are usually called "Tajiks" and "Farsiwans", as well as in Southern Iraq (Babylonia), a region which has been historically an integral part of Persia. Some names such as "Tat", "Tajik", "Sart" and "'Ajam" have also been used, especially by Arabs and Turks, in reference to Persians. The terms Parsi, Tajik, and Tat have been used interchangeably for Persians and Persian-speakers during the Middle Ages, for example in the Mughal, Safavid and Qajar era. The Persians of Central Asia who inhabit Tajikistan and parts of Afghanistan and Uzbekistan are also called Tajiks, while the term Tajik is contemporaneously also used for Iranian people who speak Pamiri languages.
Persians have generally been a pan-national group often comprising regional people who often refer to themselves as "Persians" and have also often used the term "Iranian" (in the ethnic-cultural sense). Some scholars, mechanically identifying the speakers of Persian as a distinct ethnic unit (the ‘Persians’), exclude those Iranians who speak other dialects. However, this approach can be misleading, as historically all ethnic groups in Iran, were always referred to, collectively, as Iranians (Irani).

There are far too many people already who think their ignorance holds the same value as someone elses truth, just because both of them are entitled to have opinions.
Apparently he was a devoutly for the Medo-Persian religion but also followed Babylonian, Egyptian and Phoenician religion (this is however not too strange for the time as many peoples worshipped each others gods). Apparently Cyrus even believed himself to be a divine being who was son of the two main deities in Babylon (similar to how Oda Nobunaga was deified which is fine except that it happened before he even died).

True... with just a bit of maturity we can talk about any subject anyone can come up with. Freedom of expression is in order... as is politeness and respect for all opinions, of course. ;)
True. But winning an argument is not a very healthy goal. Learning something new from an argument is much more interesting, at least in my opinion. People search for self-affirmation in all the wrong places! :(
Zoroastrianism is thought to be the oldest monotheistic religion, founded by Zoroaster. Ever watched or read game of thrones; R'hlor cult is inspired by Zoroastrianism.
It's a video about the OST of a game named "civilization" and Cyrus belongs to the Persian civilzation, so the comment does belong. ...and about the religious issue, to me it is a subject like any other.
And you know what's also sad, though not related to this vid? During the Cold War, the US barred Cuba from trading with us. We think that Cuba is an isolated nation b/c of political distrust, but it is only the US that barred Cuba, and i'm astounded that Cuba has 99% literacy and statisticly a better health care system. Cuba is full of people who love their professions and don't care one bit about low income.

Darius and Alexander in my Civ 5 game are tight. :) FREEDOM!

So many countries represent the Middle east. From the Atlas Mts. to Hindu Kush, each one having a great history and diverse culture that gives them their everlasting identity. It is a great shame that the current media makes us have the view that the Middle East is a place of danger. I strongly disagree to that view.
Of course! I don't see any reason to do otherwise. It's so much nicer to just live and let live. To go through and argue won't solve anything. Deep down, we're all human beings right?
Technically its dualistic but the other god is more like satan, he's considered a false god. The only true god the one god is Ahura mazda the god of light. Thats why its considered a monotheistic religion :)
True, but our minds are untrained and we know so little of the Universe and of life itself that our most well-supported truth is also a display of ignorance. That is why I do not think "winning" an argument will be of any good.
This is not a question of what is being dabeted, but a question of how it is being debated and how immature people in the debate are. I have seen debates full of hatred about politics, religion, soccer, RPG, art, music (not all music is actual art...) and even about trivial aspects of life. It all depends on how badly some people feel the need to "win" a discussion. :) Of course, some subjects are "hotter" than others, but the point always comes to maturity.
A warmongering Darius and I (Alexander) have been at war for nearly three thousand years. It wasn't until I convinced a very pious Askia to help me at the start of the industrial era were we able to keep him from completely eating Carthage, liberating Indonesia in the process. He's always so aggressive in my games.
@brutal6agani I agree with you, even if I'm not Muslim myself. I tend towards pantheism, but that's just me. So many religions get a bad rap because of a few misguided individuals. I think there's likely a grain of truth in each of the world's faiths. Basic humanitarianism, respect for life, a willingness to give of yourself to promote peace. That's what I go for. But of course, I applaud you for being so near and dear to your own faith. Allah salam alaikum my friend. God be with you.
+Wipit Usyzn I think you mean Aramaic, and oddly Aramaic was the official language specifically under the rule of this man, Darius. He had it changed to help better administrate the new territories conquered in Aramaic speaking lands. I don't doubt that he spoke an ancient version of P/Farsi, (or maybe Avestan?), but since Aramaic was the official language of his rule, it makes sense that he speaks Aramaic instead. These guys did their research.
I knew this comment was going to be nonsense when I looked at your username. BTW, did you ever think twice before posting your truly offensive comment? I understand that this vid isn't about a civilization during the time Islam was created. But the Muslim world after the religion itself was created brought an golden age of technology, culture, and prosperity. They also preserved the classical works of many ancient civs that would later, after the crusades, start the European renaissance period

+LuckyDukeSeven More like Turkicized Anatolians and Semites.
LuckyDukeSeven, Persians and Arabs are WAAAY different from each other. We're rivals and Babylon and Assyria aren't Arabic.
True... with just a bit of maturity we can talk about any subject anyone can come up with.
Freedom of expression is in order... as is politeness and respect for all opinions, of course. ;)
Amazing background
Or parsi, as the ancient persians called it.
True. But winning an argument is not a very healthy goal. Learning something new from an argument is much more interesting, at least in my opinion.
People search for self-affirmation in all the wrong places! :(
I love his robe...
Zoroastrianism is thought to be the oldest monotheistic religion, founded by Zoroaster. Ever watched or read game of thrones; R'hlor cult is inspired by Zoroastrianism.
This is actually the peace theme.
Bird of the Dawn
Yes, Zoroastrianism was the religion Persians followed during the Achaemenid Era, it wasn't until the Arab conquest that we adopted Islam.
Very nice choice of music for Persian empire
this was pretty good!
One of my very first backstabbers
We don't backstab.
My first backstabber was Süleyman the bastard
Ten people are supporters of Cambyses
that's one of the hallmark characteristic of the Achaemenids; they were tolerant
To Americans these days, and many others, it is a dangerous place. But it wasn't always so violent.
Alexander is coming for ya, Darius. Best to be prepared.
TubbyCraft pretty sure he was talking about in civ 5
Achaemenid Dynasty was taken under Darius III. This is Darius I.
+Reluctant Warrior Ⓥ One of my current games I'm Greece and Persia is my only very strong ally as he has Freedom ideology like me, and everyone has order except Egypt which has autocracy.
They keep declaring war on Persia ganging up on him. And I supply Persia with units and stuff, and when I need to declare war on invading countries.
Darius and Alexander in my Civ 5 game are tight. :)
FREEDOM!
Reluctant Warrior Ⓥ
It's strange because Greece and Iran actually have a very good relationship in today's world.
Platonism and Orphism were primarily influenced by Zarathustra. Monism was invented by him as well as tons of other things. So yes, there’s good reason to cooperate given the closeness of the mind.
Thanks, haters will be haters for no reason. I'm not good in english but at least i tried to express what i feel is true and right. Thank you for not letting me go too far friend :>
Its not a COMPLETE inaccuracy, just a major misrepresentation.
My favorite peace theme!
At last, a man of wisdom and thought....*sigh*...I only wish the "west" had many more such men...
I agree completely.
Darius looks like the Dwemer from Elder Scrolls
It just depends on where in the Middle East you are and if your mind is open enough.
"Yom tav lakh."
Technically its dualistic but the other god is more like satan, he's considered a false god. The only true god the one god is Ahura mazda the god of light. Thats why its considered a monotheistic religion :)
YANG TABLACH
ENTA MAR
True, but our minds are untrained and we know so little of the Universe and of life itself that our most well-supported truth is also a display of ignorance.
That is why I do not think "winning" an argument will be of any good.
Imagine a trap remix of this
Imagination Intensifies
Would be an epic beat
JRoid Ewe, no. That would ruin this.
'hey, you looks funny!' 'what? that is impossible! how could it be?!'
I Lol'd at what he's saying.
Sadly it's not even Farsi.
I meant in that text at the bottom, I don't speak Aramaic or Persian.
Those oxen statues on the sides.
How does it Shapir it's horns if it is two-headed?
Shapir
This is not a question of what is being dabeted, but a question of how it is being debated and how immature people in the debate are.
I have seen debates full of hatred about politics, religion, soccer, RPG, art, music (not all music is actual art...) and even about trivial aspects of life. It all depends on how badly some people feel the need to "win" a discussion. :)
Of course, some subjects are "hotter" than others, but the point always comes to maturity.
Does anyone has a download link for this piece of art?
I like this music
A warmongering Darius and I (Alexander) have been at war for nearly three thousand years. It wasn't until I convinced a very pious Askia to help me at the start of the industrial era were we able to keep him from completely eating Carthage, liberating Indonesia in the process. He's always so aggressive in my games.
rydianedge They have a very good UU and a UA with two good war bonuses(movement and strength) its just logic.
Best one in the game
Can someone please explain what Shapir is?
+Guardsman Boris Its when he accepts a trade offer from you.
nobody knows what it means its just fun to say
It means Beautiful in Armanic but he doesn't Speak Farsi like he should've.
Shapir means beautiful. same as Arabic Jameel.
Or maybe it was just easier to find a Aramaic speaker rather than a Farsi ou Avestan one...
Sorry, but that was a real event in history. I just decided to appreciate it. :>
the one thing i admire about the Achaemenids was that they were tolerant, unlike most of the current regime that took over their empire...
Shah Daryavaush!
*Shahanshah
Tom Donnelly Lights of Aryans!
