    Output format is the same for both mirrorless and DSLRs. Same RAW and JPEG files, often the same imaging sensor too. Nothing is dead, use what works for you.🤷‍♂️

      @wellinformedirishman 5 лет назад +3

      That's exactly the points I've made on a few occasions, the images are captured on the same sensor's, processed by the same processors and saved to the memory card, the only difference is the mirrorless body is smaller and has a small LCD/viewfinder because there's no mirror to enable us to look through the lens, which results in more battery drain.

      However, you can use your vintage lenses on a mirrorless ;)
      They got DSLR there... hard to turn down amazing lenses that people are discarding (though that is changing as more folks buy mirrorless)

    It's reasonable to assume that because that's what technology and innovation says... But a DLSR that still works, still works... the Nikon D7200, D7500, D3, D4, D5, D750, D800, D810 and D850 will continue to take great pictures as long as they are maintained...
    If the user has no need to make large prints then what's the point...
    Mirrorless are not the best,... They only mean what they mean to the user.

    • @wellinformedirishman
      @wellinformedirishman 5 лет назад +3

      You can easily make large prints from those DSLR camera's, I've recently made a 7ft x 3&1/2ft print from a D3s, I've also got a D3x which is over twice the resolution so I'm sure that would produce very large prints if required, you don't need more than 12MP to produce large prints.

I currently shoot with a D810, but my go to camera believe it or not is my little street camera (NIKON D3400) funny how my FX lens produce extremely sharp images onthe DX system... so much so that I take it just about everywhere I go...

      while all this is true, i think this is more a reference to the fact that DSLRs will no longer be produced. Funny, I've kept my Z6 in the same room as my D850 and Df, and it hasn't killed them yet! Seriously, I know where you are coming from, and there are many advantages to electronic viewfinders, but I still find them too dark when using them outdoors. They are, of course, showing what the sensor sees, but outdoors on reasonably bright days, one's eyes are accustomed to the ambient lighting, so I find the EVF though fine for framing, lacks detail. I do like using my Z6. EVFs are brilliant when the ambient lighting is low, but I prefer the optical viewfinders of my DSLRs outdoors. As for constantly checking the meter of a DSLR, I don't do that: I find the meter pretty accurate. I really can't tell by the EVF if a picture is properly exposed when using it in fairly bright lighting. And of course, using studio strobes there is no way of telling if the exposure is right before taking the shot with either EVFs or OVFs. I'm trying to give a balanced view here. I use both DSLRs and mirrorless, and each have advantages, though the mirrorless probably has the grater share, particularly with regard to lens design and autofocus accuracy (as opposed to autofocus speed), and is the future direction of photography (unless something even more amazing comes along). I would hate to see the demise of DSLRs, but I have enough to see me out, and I don't make my living from photography, so my opinion isn't going to sway camera manufacturers one way or the other.

    Hmm, click bait? Mirrorless might have a lot of benefits for event photography. However if you are into product or architecture photography the D850 is a much better choice for the working professional. For video the Sony line is King if you don't have a team of assistents. You just choose the tools you need to get the work done.

    If you like the image jumping digitally instead of continuous smooth analog view like a dslr, go ahead and buy mirrorless. I use DSLR and Leica M and the M is mirrorless and always has been.
    Technically it is called slow refresh rate and you get an image like a 1920 movie with jumpy images.

    Mirrorless is the future but dslrs aren’t dead yet! I actually got rid of the z6 for a D850 and couldn’t be happier.. Focus was more reliable and snappier and output much better and better build quality as well.. I did enjoy the full coverage focus points, live view speed and ibis the most on the z6.. the EVF isn’t that game changing for my style of shooting plus it’s still off at times by a stop or 2.. Where it’s great is constant switching of scenes where light changes rapidly.. but in most situations where you enter an area and the light is the same for the most part just pop on live view with a newer dslr get your exposure with exposure preview pop live view back off and shoot look thru viewfinder.. that way makes getting your shots right first go instead of 3 & 4 test shots but most people don’t do that with dslrs..

    Thank you so much for this video! This exactly what I needed. I am starting up my portrait photography business and I need a great full frame camera to make the next step. I have d7200 which I love but obviously I want a full frame now. So I went to look at the D850 but I was intrigued by the new Z serie as well. Now I'm quite fragile build with tiny hands and d850 felt quite a massive thing to hold. Then I went to research the z7 and eventually the z6 and came to the conclusion that the z6 would be a perfect fit. I love the way you talk about the size of the gear that most professional photographers carry because I was really hesitating how 'professional' the z6 would look in my hand, but I am totally convinced now that this is the future. Like phones and computers and everything became more compact and efficient over the last few decades, the photography world has finally started to make this transition too.

After all the Z6 sensor was built on the tech of the D750 sensor. I will buy one more D750 once we get out of this Covid issue and that will pair with my current aging D750 and this will be my last purchase of a DSLR. They won’t, and I don’t get why people who love mirrorless so much, can’t just enjoy it. For some reason, they want to kill DSLR’s. The bottom line is the images being produced and the enjoyment in making them, for me anyway. I’ve been shooting Nikon bodies since film for a longtime. I like the “Nikon Feel” (people used to say that more, referring to SLR’s and later DSLR’s) of a body like an F5 (the best 35mm film SLRe ever made) or an 810 with a grip. For me, it’s nothing to do with getting caught up in the gear or “I have a big camera” it’s just what I mostly like to shoot with. I like that Leibovitz sound bite from her “ “Masterclass” where she’s obviously talking about being hung up on gear, “What camera are you using?” She’s right, are you making photographs or are you, not only hung up on gear but (in some cases) you’re hung up on what other people are shooting with also. For me the point is mute. I’m going to shoot with what I like, have and choose to buy. As long as the manufacturers still make DSLR’s they’ll be available new! If they stop, they’ll still be around. They’ll never die, as people will still use them. And guess what? If they stop producing them, they’ll come back around the same way film cameras have now. They’ll never die, so what’s the thrill in trying to kill them because you don’t shoot with them anymore? I haven’t shot film in over a decade but I’ll never “get rid” of my F5, it’s there if I want to shoot film. Just like someone says they like their D700. Shoot, and Let Shoot in Peace!

    Hello !! Great video, I basically agree with everything you say. I’m a Sony user myself, but I see that nobody is talking about this .... EVF is “less useful” (still better than ovf) if you are shooting at night and using external flashes. The EVF won’t show you “the final result” before the click, it will only over expose so the camera can focus, but the final resul will be other, so in that situation you (all of us as photographers) have to use our brain a bit more to expose properly.... that’s it.....

    I never look at the meter on my Canon dslrs and the size of it is perfect for me as I have big hands. I also don’t need thousands of auto focus points I just single point focus and recompose and I guarantee I can do this faster than you can move your focus point fiddling around with your little joystick. I think a lot of the reasons you like mirrorless cameras is because you’ve never learned how to get the best out of dslrs. I’m not a dslr zealot but they’re still just as good as mirrorless and often, these days, half the price. The only real advantage I see - and this applies mainly to wedding photography - is the silent shutter which is awesome. But honestly, most modern dslrs are pretty quiet anyway. Save some money and grab yourself a dslr bargain rather than going for the ‘latest and greatest’

    I don't think DSLR is dead at this point, but we are in the midst of a paradigm shift. I can think of a few parallels. In the 1970s digital wristwatches appeared, first as a relatively expensive Pulsar model. Over time mechanical watches have almost totally disappeared, except for a few high-end brands for traditional devotees (I wear a TAG Heuer!), and almost all fo the mechanical watch service infrastructure is gone. Similar with film processing. A DSLR is a heavily mechanical product, and that will give was to more and more electronics with far fewer moving parts. Undoubtedly there will be further improvements such as better autofocusing and automatic sensor protection during lens swaps. I also think that much of the DSLR and mirrorless market with be lost to Smartphones, like the iPhone 11 Pro (having just bought one). I made a personal decision NOT to purchase any more DSLR bodies of DSLR-specific lenses, even though my mirrorless system has an adapter.
    I recently did a trip to Peru and took my Nikon Z6 system instead of the DSLR I usually took on trips. A few things totally blew me away. The camera, even with the f4 zoom kit lens, is amazing in low light. I took video and stills of night activities including a street parade with no problem. The 4K video is amazing, well detailed, responsive, and based on the full image sense and not a crop. Nikon has managed to design a camera system that does well in both stills and video worlds.

    You are the Z6 guy 👍. Your gear commentary is great but you thoughts on photography in general is even better. You produce great content. You did influence me to make my first Nikon purchase ever. Z6 is great. Coming from Sony and prior to that canon DSLR’s Once I got over the move to
    Mirrorless and settled in with Sony I was not satisfied with the ergonomics and the menu system. I know Sony has its fans but the Nikon just feels like a real camera from a real camera company. It’s unfortunate that the press just destroys Nikon for some reason and I believed it. Learning the z6 and loving it ....and keep coming back to your content to get tips and learn. Thank you 🙏🏼

    Thank you so much for this video man. I have the Nikon d750 and I just purchased the z6 it comes monday. This video sealed the deal for me. Thank you, I've been shooting for almost 4 years, I started with a d3200 upgraded to the d750 and now the z6. I feel DSLR's arent dead but the people who use them have a certain preference,creative vision and or like the control or feel. I'm super excited to explore the mirrorless world

    Sorry to break the mood, but the reflex has already been dead for more than 2 years now. Since the arrival of the SONY A7 series and FUJI XT2. CANON & NIKON finally took the train ‘’en route’’ after having resisting in vain. It was time they finally moved with tools at last at the height.

    Great video and agree with much of what you said. I particularly like the improved focussing capability of mirrorless cameras. I still use a DSLR D810 for studio work. Using a mirrorless camera in flash scenarios where typically shutter 160th , f8, iso 200 means you have to turn off the exposure and depth of field preview on mirrorless. Eye autofocus is amazing though.

    Can't agree more with the differences between DSLR and mirrorless - having the EVF show you the photo that you're going to take is almost irreplaceable, I really miss it when it's not there now.
    With 3, coming up to 4 bodies, are you using 2 or more bodies connected wirelessly to a single laptop for backup (per an earlier video of yours) or are you using a different backup method now? I'm really tempted to get a Z6 as a backup for my Z7 but I use the WT-7 on my Z7 to back up the card's photos (for the peace of mind) but that's a tad pricey for 2 bodies.

      I agree, very expensive and unnecessary for a wedding photog! We back up cards on portable HD before we leave the wedding but also as a secondary insurance policy Sara and I always backup shoot every important part so if we did happen to lose some images the other person will have another perspective of the same scene. I do have a lot of faith in XQD though, It pro grade tech unlike SD cards which were made for consumer electronics

  • @mittenphotog
    @mittenphotog 5 лет назад +1

    The answer to the question will mirrorless replace DSLR is, where is the bulk of the R&D money going? Are the going to slow down new and improved DSLR’s and ramp up mirrorless? I absolutely love my Z7 and have not picked up my D810 since I got the Z and have only used my D500 a few times. It was a bit of a learning curve, but I am definitely a convert.

    Getting ready to finally pick up the Nikon Z6, as I have been using the D750 for last 2 years and the D700 before that since 2009 for weddings and corporate. I agree with what you say, the lighter z6 with native lens plus all those focus points to catch images and fleeting special moments is an ideal system. That said the D750 with its AF auto is instant in locking focus over a large part of the screen area (not as much as Z6 though) and the D750 locks focus very fast in low light (especially with flash fill using my Godox V860iiN which its lithium block battery refreshes faster than the SB910 I have. In low light receptions, I get 99 % images in focus with no issues, and incredibly fast captures. The Z6 should be even better with wider AF points. The D750 also well outperforms my older D700 I have for fast autofocus capture and high speed photos such as fast moving dance images, ballet, sports, and is a much smaller lighter body than most current top pro DSLRs. I need the Z6 for video jobs, but I will be using for photos at weddings too, so I can experience the advantages. If someone is not ready to go to the Z cameras, the D750 is also a great choice, not to dismiss! Files are very easy to adjust also in post. For dynamic range, low light and added detail, the D750 outperforms the D700 I think.

    This is my experience switching from DSLR to Mirrorless. At the beginning I was hesitant to switch, I was looking to the Sony System, but then looking at the investment, It was very expensive, Then I looked into the Fuji System, I kind of rented an XT3 with the kit lens just to see, but it was hard to test the camera without the lenses I'm used to use. Then I thought, if my lenses are compatible with the Z6, i'll try it. But even with the Z6 I was hesitant to buy, due to the lack of the battery grip, dual card slots and that the youtube channels were trashing the focus system, Until nikon updated the firmware and looking at your channel and you giving your honest opinion, and I say honest because you are very clear that you are not here to make money, but to share and educate on photography, besides that you don't have links and you are not here to get popularity. I was shooting with the D4, and for some reason many pictures were coming out of focus, even when I put the focus point were I wanted, some pics were out of focus. I tried shooting with the D4 live view with face detect and pictures were coming in focus. Then I thought, if i can get pictures in focus with the D4 live view with face detect, then the Mirrorless system must be good. I tried the z6 for a month, not thinking twice, i bought my second one, then about a couple of weeks, I did my first event just mirrorless. I still wanna try the combo you mentioned in your other videos the 35mm and the 85mm. Now, the hard part for me is getting rid off my other cameras, because I know I won't be using them now that I love shooting with my z6s. What you say about the focus system on the d700, I get it very well, I have experienced it, for that reason I loved shooting with my d500 because the focus points were more distributed in the viewfinder and I could put them were I wanted them, due to is a crop sensor, but even the D500 has to go. Thanks for sharing.

    Two features I really like about the Z6 are the ability to shoot in silent mode, and the manual focus zoom aid. When I need the EVF equivalent on the 750 I use live view as a workaround, such as for ultra low light situations. These are just a few naunces I didn't hear in the video, but I really appreciate your perspective on all--thank you.

      Well according to Sony statistically one XQD card should be safer than two SD. And nikon have only had one report on a XQD with actually data failure since they started using it in 2012. So it's pretty darn safe. There's a bigger chance that you get your camera stolen after the wedding then your XQD card failing.

    I’m coming from the 1980’s F4 single focus point viewpoint background. Now got a D850 and z6 but I really find it quicker to still single point focus and reframe to taste. Too many unreliable‘ s if left to auto focus points. Also the start up delay of z6 can miss impromptu compared to dslr. Got all your points though and yes it’s great to see what u get. But the D850 gets it anyway without fail and it’s nice to use an optical viewfinder. Nighttime is different and I am amazed how the z6 see’s in pitch dark! Plus add in the image stabilization... smaller size and weight makes a nice difference but a bigger camera has a presence and gravity, e.g. Pentax 67 which can be part of the photographic theatrics.

    Mirrorless is definitely the future, but DSLRs are not going to die off just yet. In fact, about 85-90% of camera sales are still DSLRs, especially amongst Professionals. Also, DSLR sales will soar before they die off because of the mirrorless presence, especially when you have epic, legendary DSLRs still out there like the D700, D4S, D810, D850, etc. I currently don’t have a mirrorless body, but I am aware of the benefits of it. Example, IBIS and auto focus are great to have but using DSLR with no IBIS and auto focus will still do the job. Practice, practice, practice. Develop your muscle memory and work with what you have. Your skills will develop using your tools and not the other way around. DSLRs are still alive and still able to take good photos than latest and greatest.

    One of the things I love the most about going mirrorless, is the option to use manual lenses more easily. But everything you mention goes as well, particularly the EVF and the weight. I had a Canon 80D before, changed to Fujifilm's X-T3. I used a 24-70mm f/2.8, 70-200mm f/2.8, and a Tamron 45mm f/1.8. Let's just say that the weight has been cut down substantially. Now I have the 18-55mm f/2.8-4, a manual Nikkor-H 50mm f/1.4, a manual Kamlan 28mm f/1.4 (chinese and cheap, but works great for what I need it for). Just need a telephoto lens, and I'm set. It will all weight much less than the Canon gear I had. I love Canon, but my back loves Fujifilm.

    Photographers are funny. I bought my first camera, a Nikon FE in 1978. And oh the controversy, you wouldn't believe it. You want an FE? You sure you don't want an FM? The FE uses an electric shutter, which means the camera had to have a battery. The FM's shutter was purely mechanical. A lot of people just did not want to give up their mechanical shutters. The purity of the thing is just so delicious. You don't need a battery. After all, batteries aren't reliable. What happens if you're out shooting, and uh oh, you're battery dies. You're screwed. Never mind you could get about 3 years of shooting out of a battery, they cost about $2 each, and they weighed nothing, people still worried about being caught on a shoot without a battery. And on and on and on the debate went. I see things haven't changed much.

    As for APSC, the same set up for Sony mirrorless (UWA, telephoto, walk-around, 35 +50 primes and macro with IS) costs around 1,5k $ more than a corresponding DSLR set up. I am sure the same will be true for Nikon mirrorless. IQ is comparable, AF in viewfinder mode is comparable (except for Eye AF which I do not use). So if you can afford to spend more money or you use one or two lenses, then yes, go ahead with mirrorless. For now, DSLRS do the job for me for less money.

    Nonsense! Just because you like it doesn't mean the DSLR is dead.

    good points. I find using a Sony a6000 for events with the evf is awesome. I know without taking my eye away from the EVF if I have the shot or not after it clicks. On the other hand I picked up my D700 a few months ago after having on the shelf for quite a while and when it comes to Architecture shoots it still is incredible. When you have a huge variable of light between the interior and the light from the exterior the evf won't save you. You still need to know what you're doing to capture the huge DR in the shot.

    GREAT video. I shoot mirrorless, just amateur but I love it. When I see people with a huge DSLR, I used to think they were 'better' somehow, but I was wrong. There is such an arrogance about many photographers where they just piss on anything they are not themselves invested in. I don't listen to reviews and specs..... I feel the art of photography is getting lost to settings, post-production and obsession over final process, instead of taking a good picture.
    I use almost exclusively vintage lenses on my Lumix. My favorite is a simple 45mm Rokkor-x that I got for free. It has such a wide aperture, and the bokeh is just dreamy.
    As always, use what works! I dream of affording a Gh5, or Sony A7. Maybe when I am wealthy. If ever :) (or when they get cheaper.) I still use an old Lumix G3, it is only 16mp but does the job I need.

    I was wondering as to the price of range of your wedding photography?

    In the near future i reckon photography classes would be all about how to position yourself in a given environment. So glad I won't be part of that.

    Documentary style fuji shooter here. Totally agree with you on capturing the in between moments. My style at a wedding is all about that. I actually do no posed photos at all.

    Currently using a Sony a7ii. Still like film just for the fun of being surprised when the images come back.

    Is Film Dead? Maybe it appeared to be for a while, until a whole new generation brought it back. That’s the same that would or will happen to DSLR’s. Unless everyone throws them into a landfill somewhere. I’ve still got my important film bodies and I’ll do the same with DSLR’s. Well, I still shoot DSLR’s. I’m not a mirrorless convert. If I do add mirrorless, it’ll still be whatever tool is appropriate for the job and how I want to shoot. For me, DSLR’s won’t die.

    If I shot weddings, yeah, mirrorless. It seems I could set a desirable aperture and speed, then adjust ISO on the fly for really great exposures without distracting effort; however, I will never shoot weddings. I have ZERO interest in it. I shoot MLS Listing Photography. It's, for the most part, all I shoot. It's as satisfying as it is fun; and, it supports a comfortable lifestyle. Also, if pictures don't turn out for whatever reason I can re-shoot, so I don't sweat it at all. For this sort of technical photography I do not need to capture the moment to WOW, I just need to shoot homes which have been staged properly. I began doing this with a Nikon D7100 along with an appropriate lens and a speedlight. This system works without ANY issue; and, with a custom Lr preset I created, I can output beautiful photography with lightning speed. The bottom-line is I will stick with DSLR because there's nothing about mirrorless which will actually improve my workflow. sterlingimagesphotography.com

    That's because it's a modern beast! I love a dslr but that Z6 is mighty.

    Loving my Z6 so far - can't wait to really test it and see how it fares in fast paced scenarios, having just got it.
    Fairly new to the photography game I feel a bit lucky that I got to use DSLRs before switching to mirrorless. Just in my appreciation of now having a in many ways faster system. And I think it helped my understanding of the basics like the exposure triangle, focus and recompose etc.
