There is a lot of engineering and innovation in the Sun Princess' massive theater, whose configuration can change drastically day-to-day, depending on the performance. But one
"weird" fact that that struck Adam Savage, as a theater guy, is how everything -- from costumes to sets to gear -- comes in one little door. Princess Cruises' vice-president of entertainment experience Denise Saviss and Richmond International associate Harry Allnatt take Adam through the design and building of this 2,000-seat state-of-the-art entertainment center.

Do you have hear of the Artwork "Schwebebahn" 🚟 ?
I can Show you everything Here 😬
You can do a smal RUclips Videoe next time about the Schwebebahn 🚟 in Wuppertal Germany 😁🫡
We can't wait to see the next episode (and hang out with you on Discovery Princess, of course)! 🚢☀
Could I have the CAD model of the princess. I’d love to print it out for my desk.
Sorry but how do I join and is it free ?
If I went on a cruise, the most enjoyable thing for me would be a multi-day tour of the inner workings of the ship. I'm not a big gambler and I can't dance, but the engineering behind how a floating city works, THAT's interesting.
Do they have such tours? If not, why not?
Agreed. A tour of the engineering sections would be all I'd care for on a cruise.
A cruise dedicated to the engineering of the ship would likely be the only thing that would convince me to sign up for a cruise
Exactly!
I've been on a couple Princess cruises and they had behind-the-scenes tours for the kitchens which are massive and kind of interesting, but no engine room stuff. I don't think they would take folks there for the liability and security, they're super tight spaces and you need hearing protection, etc.
What a coincidence. I'm currently working on a Sun Princess show. For the last 5 years I've been making Costume Props for their Stage Shows . It's so cool to see the behind the scenes of what I've been working on.
Fun facts! The theater on a cruise ship is more advanced that any theater on Broadway. The same Broadway show goes on for years, on a cruise ship we change the show up to 7 times per cruise.
I love watching Adam nerd out about everything. Like a gritty kid , never give that up!
Many people underestimate the incredible engineering that goes into the creation of these gigantic, floating dysentery wards.
As someone who likes knowing how things are made, Likes big machines, works with steel, works tech at a local theatre, and has watched Adam forever... This video is the best.
This whole series has been amazing! It's a very unique look into things we don't usually get to see. This has also definitely been better than most sponsored content - it feels very much tailored to showcase things the channel viewers (and Adam) would enjoy seeing.
I have watched nearly every episode of Discovery Canada's Mighty Ships series, but not once did I think I'd get to see one of those ships in the making!!! Thanks Adam! This was cool!
I so hope we get another video of the theater when it's complete and everything's installed. I get some many inspirational ideas for shows I work on by seeing how the pros do it.
The engineering of this boat is ridiculous. Never been on a cruise, never will. But do like this content, a lot!
Never say never. Just took the Discovery princess and it was a great experience
How much pollution do those things pump out per day, Adam?
3:56 now that's efficiency
Bike man
lol at 3:56 some guy just casually bikes past, no hands, texting away 🤣🤣
This series is showing some extraordinary engineering. The theater is astounding. Thanks for sharing Adam.
The engineering behind everything that goes into building these are amazing!
These streams are such fun. I most likely will never cruise. Viewing the design and engineering that goes into this ( or any) floating building fascinates me. I look forward to your future posts about the Sun Princess.🌻
This is so cool! I work with the company that builds most of the scenery for Princess, and I've done quite a few installs on new and old ships! The previous theatres were already advanced and at the top of their class so I'm excited to see the opportunities and problem-solving of this new design and leap forward!
$300/night, $1B to build, all the amenities of being on land but burning 500 cubic meters of LNG per day to look at the ocean. Neat?
Loved this! What a superb space to work with and what a great collaboration between all disciplines to create it. The creation of theatre is just as magical as the experience
As a performer who also trained in tech *and* stage management (two theatre degrees), I definitely appreciate the geeking out going on here!! I doubt I'll get a chance to even get on the ship, let alone the theatre, but I can still dream! (And as a part-time wheelchair user, I *definitely* appreciate getting the best seats in the house!! 😊)
They need to build a "fhloston paradise!" ^-^
The thumb nail promised me an 18 minute video about a door and you didn't open the door.
Never promised you an *open* door.😉
OMG that dude on his phone leisurely rolling through the shot @3:55😆
3 boat videos now? Adam must be taking the extended family on that free cruise!😂
Man, I was expecting the door to open into a cantilevered stage so you could have indoor performances still backdropped against the sunset or port of call.
"The best seats in the theater are actually the ADA seats".
That honestly made me tear up a little bit. That's a beautiful intersection of engineering and inclusive design.
I went on the Princess Marguerite for a sixth grade field trip from Seattle to Victoria B.C..
Please make a tour through the ship when it is finished!
3:56 and the guy on bicycle using his phone. :D
I love that Adam brought his own hardhat. Every other video like this the presenter is wearing the "visitor" helmet.
Nice video sir thanks
I worked at a shipyard in the ‘80s. Remember the smell of burnt steel and grinding discs.
I've been in the theaters of several Royal Caribbean ships. They're awesome, too.
3:55 guy riding a bike with no hands
Don't worry he has a hardhat on, he's safe.
Funny to hear you mention Tait. They are located close to me. Claire Bros is also in the same town. I'm not sure why a tiny town in Amish country became the home of touring entertainment logistics.
Kick ass!!!!
The engineering involved is seriously impressive
Adam love to see the look like when its done
The guy riding the bike, in the back ground, no hands, playing on his smart phone @3:55 lol
It's nice you 3D printed a model specifically for exposition, Adam.
Seeing this thru Adams eyes is so different and special. He asks the questions all of us makers and creative people are asking when we see a “making of” show.
As someone who had the good fortune to be on the Majestic Princess just a few months ago. Seeing the Sun Princess go from a concept video to this has been amazing. I will probably never go on another cruise but these videos are really making me dream.
It's ok if this never gets read, but thanks for making Mythbusters so educational. I had to help my sister with some physics homework recently, and it all just felt really natural and easy. Even though I've never actually worked with air pressure or mechanical advantage. Looking back, a lot of that probably just comes from the you and Jamie explaining so many mechanical principles.
Thank you for taking us with you on this grand adventure!! Amazing vision, story and work by Princess, and watching Adam share his love of the engineering, art and technique is just wonderful. Being an old ship snipe, wish I could be there with him to share it. Adam is so very respectful to the project team and craftsmen and trades .... very important for them to get the credit and appreciation he shows. Hope he gets to see and take us into the actual engineering spaces ... usually not available due to security, but they got some howler gensets down there I'd love to see!! Well done as always Team T !!
Suxh a cool concept. We need more people (not just on ships) to think like this
Did a video of the flooding of the dry dock get missed or was it not filmed?
1 word : Wow!
As a wheelchair user, ada seats are either the best in the house or worse than the worst seats. There is no middle ground. I’m glad they went with the former
I find the ship interesting, but a cruise on a cruise ship is really the absolute last thing I'd ever want to do.
Idk why so many people hate on cruises it's not that bad. It's just a floating luxury hotel.
@@xXSinForLifeXx water is terrifying man, also just look up the environmental impact 🥲
@@xXSinForLifeXx I think a lot of people assume it's wall to wall people all the time in a very confined space. I really don't think they understand just how HUGE these ships are. They are floating cities. Multiple venues, tons of eateries, pools, theaters, etc etc. It's entirely possible to never see many of the passengers more than once.
@Patryn71 Yeah if you avoid the buffet and the pool you will not find much of a crowd. No more than any other hotel or city venue atleast.
@@xXSinForLifeXx A floating monument to excessive consumerism. Ugly, massive eye-sore. Environmental catastrophy. Ruins coastal communities. They're awful. I can't think of a less imaginative way to waste quite a lot of money for a holiday. At least they're good pieces of engineering.
This series has been great!
Not finished, though, till Captain Adam steers it!
Adam and destin from smartereveryday would be an amazing pairing for these types of videos.
The engineering that goes into these ships is nuts. Shame they're floating boomer disease boxes pumping pollution into the ocean.
An interesting technical question is how much of the ship has been machine welded vs human welded.
How do I get that ship model??
@3:57 guy rides by texting, with no hands on the handlebars. 🚲🚴🙂
Wow.
wow what a ship , brilliant video Adam .
This is just a fancy implementation of a combination of the black box theater and a repertory theatre.
Adam getting paid good money by princess Cruise to do this
Another amazing upload. Having never been on a cruise, but have seen videos of performances given on them and it never dawned on me that you have to get all that equipment in there. Especially when most of these theaters are deep in the ship. Thanks for the insight and exposure to something I've never even thought of! 👍🏻
I'm disgusted with myself with how well this marketing series has worked on me. Never gave Princess even the most cursory glance and now I'm tracking fares out of Galveston. Lol
I appreciate sponsorships that actually excite the channel creator(s).
Another ad
Can’t wait to adam geek out in the future at TAIT …
When Adam shows the model and where the door is at he points at the WRONG end of the ship, LOL. Granted some ships have the theater at the aft but it has been way over 20 years since this.
The one thing I'm wondering is why didn't they just build those doors into both sides of the ship so it wouldn't matter which side was docking and they could still load easily?
the only thing they are missing is a telescoping boom crane to load in from ... then they won care if there is a crane or not ... all they need is to get the supplies under the doorway
this is great series! Adam your questions are so good and its every I wanted to ask myself haha.
Also can I just just say I know this is sponsored etc but shout out to the employees from princess who are great in front of the camera, passionate while giving really interesting and thoughtful answers. you can tell they are really enjoy the the project and their work.
I love harry, as an engineer myself i can hear the pain in voice with the push and pull aspects of the celling. Brilliant haha
How fast they forget that these floating plague ships and environmental disasters are.
I am positive this is the only cruise I would consider. Wandering the completed ship with Adam, Super Cool.
Like, I wouldn't do a vacation on a ship like that, I mean, why even go to sea if all you do is pretty much stuff you would do at land... I certainly can appreciate the engineering of those thing tho, its incredible how these things are built.
This is truly one of the most unexpectedly interesting series I've seen on RUclips.
Thanks for the in-depth look at this theater being built! I'm like you, I love watching from behind the scenes.
Was this shot in Finland?
Italy.
Surprised they didn't include its own crane.
So much extra thought has to go into how to make this work for a vessel at sea.
And as an engineer, this is fascinating...
However, as a consumer... why go through all that effort, when during the entire event, i won't even notice i'm at sea... and really complex systems are actively trying to ensure that.
Which begs the question: just why at sea, when you can do the exact same on land, for a fraction of the price, and a fraction of the environmental impact?
Suitable for a snooker tournament?
So who thought they had a stuck pixel.... 👀
Hatch. Deck. Overhead. Bulkhead.
If they want to wow me, then make it where many things come out of the floor like the roman coliseum.
I wonder if they have a time lapse set up of the total construction. It would be cool to see that
Will Tested be going on her maiden voyage?
Sembra di sentire la storia di Roma... nel opera di questo teatro e della sua tecnologica....
The door is explained at 10:57
2:35 dead pixels
7:55 So... they're asking guests to pay no attention to the man behind the curtain?
These extended cruise ship commercials are kinda weird content. Hope it paid well.
They don't really fit in with Tested, do they?
Yeah, I'm getting kind of annoyeed. The envornmental and socioeconomical destruction that cruises and cruises participate in is actually gross.
Fundamentally the content is pretty similar to his MET armor content. Adam talking with professionals about impressive feats. In this case it's modern ships and in the MET videos it's historical smithing.
Cruise ships aren't great environmentally, but there's no denying that they are impressive feats of engineering.
@@Lavaman_E89 Absolutely, they are impressive, the content is actually interesting. We could use those amazing engineers and resources towards so many more meaningful and not harmful causes.
@@Lavaman_E89 I think the MET armor content fits the channel perfectly since it appeals to the makers that inhabit this channel. The content gives a ton of ideas to anyone who wants to create their own armor. It also fits in well with the series Adam did where he worked on an armor he had created.
This cruise ship content is just crass commercialism. IMO.
"Everything on the ship has a brake, weight or mumblelocks".
What kind of lock? I want to know more but couldn't recover a useful search term from the word as heard.
I think she’s saying Serapid. They’re a lift equipment manufacturer.
Am i the only one that notices the dead pixel?
i would love to see/hear Adam geeking out on the Sphere in Las Vegas
I recently got the opportunity to talk to some of the team making the props for Beetlejuice and a bunch of other shows, and they mentioned that the cruise version if Beetlejuice is really in depth and even has some crazier props than the Broadway show
Oh my god that is so amazing, if you have anything cool youd like to share id love to hear it! I adore Beetlejuice so much
I recently installed that set on the Norwegian V!va! It's naturally a physically scaled down version from the touring version we built right before that (and the Broadway version they're both based on), but it's got a few extra things too! I sadly don't get to see the performance itself, but with all the crazy technology onboard that ship I'm sure it's quite fun!
I love fish tacos!!
After reading these comments, a video from Adam is not the problem lol. Most people watching these likely won't even go on a cruise to begin with. If there's an issue it's with the much more wealthy, which would probably go on a cruise whether they saw this video or not
How much of this design was tested in real working conditions before put on a cruise ship? With this much investment I doubt the function was all theoretical.
Model deserves a mini-Tory on waterskis...
Curious. Almost all cruise ships sail under a non-US flag, so how does that play into their compliance with US regulations? Is it a requirement to dock? (Ignoring, for the point of the question, that it's a good thing to do and attracts more business, of course. Frankly, the extra expense would take a long time to reclaim, longer than if the ship was not ADA compliant.)
There are usually requirements to be met in order to provide a passenger service in a certain countries waters. For example, if you want to provide passenger service from a UK port, you would need to meet the requirements of the UK Maritime and Coastguard Agency who would enforce compliance with the Persons of Reduced Mobility regulations (which are fairly standardised across the UK and EU, though UK approval no longer automatically grants EU approval). Failure to meet these requirements would likely result in nullification of your ships insurance in those waters.
That hatch mechanism looks pretty weak if a rogue wave would hit it directly.
Hope there's some bolts sliding in and out like in a safe door to prevent that.
The coolest think about the Sun Princess is it's literally too big to fail and absolutely unsinkable.
Huge ship design is so cool. Id watch 90 minutes on each room.
Tech focused theatre tour that’s how you get my attention lol
